Title: WEDDELL family *COMPLETED*
Post by: GailS on Tuesday 09 November 10 00:52 GMT (UK)
Hi everyone,

I am trying to fill in some blanks. I have William and Isabella WEDDELL (her maiden name is McMillan) coming to NZ in 1878 aboard the "Timaru" with their daughter Esther.

They go on to have 4 sons here in NZ, Claude, Alexander, Forrester, and William,  I have the info on them from the bdm site, I would like to know where William and Isabella are buried, and their children also too please, (I do have some of them in Dunedin) There dosn't seem to be many WEDDELLs on the bdm site, and the Williams age isn't quite right, I might be missing something here!

I would appreciate some fresh eyes please.

Dont worry about the info on Esther as I have all her info as she is my Great Grandma.

Thanks,

Gail.

according to the bdm site

Isabella died in 1932 aged 78
William died 1915 aged 80 so that must be him with the kids.

Not sure where Isabella is yet though.

Looks like you will have to contact the Council for the details of Isabella, or the NZSG of the Oamaru Branch will have details

Hi janinez,

The William who died in 1915 age 80 has him born about 1835, the info I have on William has him born about 1847, this info comes from the LDS pilot site from the passenger records, has him age 31 and Isabella age 28. Do you think the dates and ages could be out that much??

Hi KPH, funny you find and Isabella in Oamaru, I lived there for 27 years, you would have thought I would have got this genealogy bug while still living there!  ;D

Thanks guys.

Gail,

There is another William Weddell on the locator, gives no age, no date of death, but location is Andersons Bay.    NZSG Dunedin Branch has a record no: 1/1757.   Might be worth in getting in touch.

Hi,
I live in Mosgiel and have some info on Errol James WEDDELL. Our genealogy group did a book on the  W W 2 soldiers killed in action. Errol is the son of Alexander McMillan WEDDELL and Eva (nee RICHARDSON) I am happy to scan the info about him and P M you with it if you would like. It is from the book we put out called" For The Fallen" the story of the 31 men of W W 2 who appear on the Mosgiel Cenotaph. The names seem connected so he may be your family.

Hi Gails

I just saw this name and I was wondering about the spelling of the name
as it seems very similar to  Twadell, Tweddell  as this name appears in some connection in my own family of my father line , particular his sisters married name

There is a lot of the name around Carcoar , Cowra ,Bowral location in NSW

And my fathers mother remarried a Tweddell and died in 1968 in New Zealand

Hi texasjoe
google sites will give you the origins of your durname TWEDDELL and variants
http://www.surnamedb.com/Surname/Tweddell

This surname recorded in a wide range of spellings including Tweedell, Tweedle, Twidale, Twydale, Twydell, and many other forms, is of Northern English and Scottish origin. It is a both a "Border Reivers" surname for someone who lived in the valley of the Tweed river, in Northumberland, and also tribal in that nameholders owed allegiance both to the English and Scottish monarchs, or often - neither!

Bye
Althea  :)

Hi Gail S
I was doing some searching and found your post.
I am also looking at this part of the family. Esther is my Great Grand Aunt. I have little information on Esther other than her marriage and the names of three of her 4 children.
If we are able to exchange information, that would be fantastic. I may have information you are interested in if you are in fact still involved in this family tree.

Hi Gail

I am the great granddaughter of William Weddell, Esther's younger brother.
So if i have this right, we are third cousins.
As i understand, i have to post 3x to be able to PM.
I'll put up another post after this so as to enable the function.
Cheers.

I'm interested in filling in blanks around Esther and also if you have any information going back further. I've hit a bit of a wall when I follow the Weddell line into Scotland.
I'll try using PM after this.
