Hi
John Heap is shown in the 1861 Census, born 1832/33
at Pickup Bank, Darwen, Nr. Blackburn, Lancs. Source: (1861 RG9 3064/75a). He married Ellen Astin, born 1832 in New Accrington, at St James Church, Accringtron in Sep 1853. The Census shows them living at 3 Baxenden, New Accrington. On the marriage certificate (microfiche in local library) John's father is shown as Richard.
John was born before civil registration was introduced in 1837 and as such his birth would not be registered?
The LDS site lists John Heap many times, in the corrrect
time frame, but no record of a link with Pickup Bank, Darwen.
Is there anyone out there. please, who could do a look up for the Accrington area in order to trace John's parents and any siblings?
Ellen Astin was christened on 6 Jan 1833, father James,
mother Nancy (FHL Film 1068757 Dates 1830 - 1860).
Recorded in : Accrington, Lancashire. I wonder if Ellen's
parents are listed in the early Census which would enable me to trace an earlier generation.
Grateful for any help and advice.

The Astin family were still at Baxendale, New Accrington, on the 1851 census:

Richard Heap and family were still at Bank Street:

Henry Heap, 15, cotton mill,
Thomas Heap, 13, cotton mill,

There were lots of other Heaps in the neighbourhood, but the only one I can see that comes close to what Gerry is looking for is this:
HO 107-2250 535/46
High Riley Farm, New Accrington (employed by the Cunliffe family)
John Heap, servant, either 17 or 19?, carter, b. New Accrington
Sorry I can't be sure of the age.

Hello to Bryant & Steve
This posting is 2.5 years old so it was a surprise to see it climbing the ladder :) I found both your postings from yesterday while browsing Lancashire requests today, neither had reached my in box, while other replies posted today have. This is not the first time replies have gone astray.
Thanks for the searches you have made. John was born about 1833 in Pickup Bank, Darwen, his parents were Richard Heap born about 1807 and Ellen Heap (nee Garsden) born about 1816. John had two sisters, Mary about 1837 and Ellen about 1840. So far the family has not been found in 1841. In 1851 John Heap is found in Baxenden, together with his sister Mary, (HO107/2250 Folio 546 Page 12) living with their uncle, James Garsden and his wife Mary. His parents and sister Ellen cannot be found in 1851 and quite possibly they had died?
For Ellen Astin I have the 1841 and 1851 records, where she is at home with her parents and her father in the Inn Keeper of the Dog & Partidge in Baxenden (father was in charge in 1841, 51 and 61). John Heap and Ellin Astin married in 1853 and I have their census records for 1861. By 1871 they are back at the Dog & Partridge with John Heap the Inn Keeper. The Inn is still there today.
Many thanks for making contact and your help is much appreciated.
