One of my paternal ancestral lines can be traced back to:
William Huntly BAILEY, who was supposedly the son of Nathaniel and Jane, and was baptised on 3 Sep 1780 in St. Swithin's church, Walcot, Bath.
He married Maria NORTON at about the turn of the century and they went on to have two known children: Maria Norton Bailey, bap. 1 May 1803 St. Michael's, and George Norton Bailey, bap. 25 Nov 1804 St. Swithin's.
I would appreciate some helping in finding out more about William and Maria and their parents.
When and where did they marry?
What was William's occupation? I have been told that he was tailor (as was the son GNB)
When and where was Maria born?
As I know next to nothing about these ancestors, any morsel of information would be step forward.
Many thanks,
Justin

Hi Justin,
A good place to start is FreeREG http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/Search.pl
The marriage is there.
There's also a marriage for Nathaniel Bailey and Jane Huntley who would be good candidates for William's parents even if you didn't already know of the baptism. That doesn't show up, but FreeREG doesn't yet cover Walcot baptisms 1780-1800.

Hello David,
Thank you for the tip (or rather reminder); I'm always forgetting to take a trawl through FreeREG.
It's a shame about the Walcot baptisms. Presumably, Maria Norton falls in that missing period. Checking through my notes, I was given William's baptismal date by a descendent of William's and Maria's son James.

Justin,
I hope you a moment for a novice in these matters.
I have been looking into the ancestors of my Brother -in-law
To date I think we have a trail going back as Follows
Richard Selborne Bailey b 1948
Henry Trevor Selborne Bailey 1920-1991
George Frederick Selborne Bailey 1880-1969
Gerge Frederick Bailey 1847-? (Surgical Instrument Maker)
I think that he is the brother of William Huntly Bailey 1833-1864 (Surgical Instrument Maker)
This where I get a bit confused as how they are linked to the names you mention.
I had the two brothers being the sons of anothe William Huntly Bailey c1800-c1864
and a possible marriage with Sarah Bowker
Richard is convinced that he is
1) related to Nathanial Bailey ?-1742 of Dictionary fame
2) to a one time Mayor of Bath.
3) Connected to the Surgical intrument making history of the Baileys
Am I on the right lines....

There is also the baptism for a son - William Huntley Bailey
Vineyard Chapel, Bath, Somerset
Born - 17 June 1806
Baptised - 29 September 1806
Parents - William Huntley Bailey & Maria Bailey
Parish of Abode - Walcot, Bath, Somerset

The missing Walcot baptisms have been added to FreeREG since this thread began. Several children of Nathaniel and Jane are there, and Maria Norton. (Use Soundex as Bailey is spelt several different ways.) It looks likely that Nathaniel was the son of Nathaniel and Angel from Paulton - which makes a connection with the lexicographer look unlikely (from the DNB entry that Nathaniel lived in London all his life and his only known son was buried there).

A little more detail for you for the baptism of the children of Nathaniel Bailey
Baptism's conducted by the Rev. Mr. Howells.
Baptised at the Independent Chapel, Chelwood, Somerset.
Chelwood Meeting House.
Parents parish of Abode - Paulton.
Abigail - 19 March 1747
Nathaniel 24 July 1754
James 3 November 1756
It would appear that Nathaniel and Jane baptised their children at the Countess of Huntingdons Congregation Vineyard Chapel, Bath (just after their births) and then later at St Swithin, Walcot, Bath.
Trusting this helps with your research
Kind Regards
Angie

I have only just got back into FH research after a very busy spell at work.
David - thank you so much for keeping tabs on this family and tipping me off about the new additions to FreeREG. I shall now go and investigate.
Angie - That info is very helpful indeed. Thank you.
I shall now be able to tackle this line with renewed vigour (and success)
SRUFC - The only info I have on WHB is the baptism date. I have not researched any of the Bailey/Huntly collateral lines really; it's been hard enough following my own direct lineage. Richard's assertions should most definitely be investigated further. I shall put some thought to the matter during the week, when I have a bit more time.

Hi. I know quite alot about the Bailey and Norton families. The common ancestor for me with my Jane Huntly marrying Nathanial Bailey. William Huntly, Jane's older brother is my ancestor. There were generations of William Huntly Bailey's and as surgical instrument makers living in London they were in contact with later generations of the Huntly family.
