Title: Completed. Thanks. Help- Codec Required - Error.
Post by: Barbara348 on Monday 08 November 10 12:46 GMT (UK)
Hi,

I hope someone can help/advise re the following message that appears when I try to view some small video clips I made through my web-cam.

They used to play great through Windows Media, but I've not viewed them for a few months and when I have tried to do so, in the last few days, I get the Audio bit in Windows Media but not the Video.

They are made up mainly of little films featuring my grandchildren so I really don't want to lose them.

Can anyone help me with this problem please?

Thank you

Barbara

I have K-lite Codec Pack installed and that usually overcomes any codec problems I experience with Media Player Classic:

I use K-Lite as well. It's the old WMP6 with added codecs & works on pretty much all types of file.
It's a free download & safe.

I'd guess the 64 bit version would be for use with the 64 bit version of Windows - which I don't have.

I'm using 6.5.0

Thanks Phillip,

I know very little about the technicalities so I dont really know about 32 bit & 64 bit really.

Also, which of the following choices will be best for what I want to do, just view small vidoe's  etc.

There are several different variants of the K-Lite Codec Pack. Ranging from a very small bundle that contains only the most essential decoders to a large and more comprehensive bundle. The global differences between the 5 variants can be found below. Detailed differences can be found on the comparison of abilities and comparison of contents pages.

Bear with me please, it's all a bit of a muddle to me.

Thanks

Barbara.

hello Barbara,

for the 32 or 64 bit question, if you are using Microsoft windows as opposed to a Mac or Linux as your operating system to make your computer work, then click on:
start
control panel
system and security
system
this will tell you if your computer is using 32 or 64 bit technology.

Hi Falcybe,

Thanks for your information.

I went into Control Panel > Systems Information  > System Directory = C:Windows /System 32, so now I know which ' bit 'system I have & I'll remember for the future.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Phillip,Jim & Roger,

I had a bit of a shock this morning - I clicked on my little video clips and they opened straight away - I couldn't believe it  :o
I don't know how whatever was wrong righted itself but I'm very relieved and I intend keeping a note of the websites & advice you all gave, just in case it happens again.

Thank you all very much for the help

Barbara.

hello Barbara,

I'm just wondering if you are looking in the right place. I too have a folder C:/windows/system32 but my operating system is definitely 64 bit, as shown on the photo in my previous posting.
Somewhere in the path I gave you, you should see a page with all sorts of information about your computer:
operating system (XP, Vista, Windows7, other), processor, ram, etc.

cheers, falcybe

Hello Barbara,

I couldn't see how many bits you have on your photo :-) and it has been too long since I had XP to remember perfectly but I am 99% sure you have 32 bit.

Anyway, computers are very forgiving so assume you have 32 with your download and if it doesn't work then go back and choose 64!!

All the best, falcybe

Hi Falcybe,

To get a proper look at my PC System details, I had to follow this path:

Control Panel >  Help & Support > Advanced System Info > Detailed System Information, which then showed a list of all the workings/content ,including the entry = System Directory   C:\WINDOWS\system32.

So I'm taking it that means I have a 32 bit System?

I'm always wishing  I was more technical  :(

Thanks again

barbara.

My computer will not recognise my cam corder and found this was a codec error. Having come across this thread was about to download k lite full version when i noticed the `advised free registry check" to use before down loading is it safe to use this? I know very little bout computers.

I wouldn't bother - they are trying to sell you something.
They will make it seem as though you are in dire need of this program that they have.
Only use that, if all else fails.

You can download Klite from a number of sites, you don't have to use those that throw unwanted stuff in.It is safe,I've used it for years without problem. There is also a 64bit version.

Thanx to u both for advice. I did think they were trying to sell but as inexperienced was also thinking maybe i`d better do registry thing in case something goes wrong ... not a lot of confidence and all that.

So having determined i am 32 bit .. which version should i download .. basic standard or full? and should i use the link provided in this post?
