I have an ancestor, John Moss, who in the 1851 census quite clearly states he was born in Carlton, Oxfordshire.
Sadly, he dies before the next census and the 1841 census of course simply states he was born out the county (Leicestershire).
I am having no luck finding Carlton in Oxon. Does anyone have any idea where this place is? Maybe it was in another county at the time? Could it be a mis-transcription of something?
Any leads very garetfully received.

I wonder if your "Carlton" is actually an attempt at Charlton, it seems the most likely to me

The OFHS transcript shows no MOSS baptism there. The name is more found in the west of the county. Can we have the birth year of John MOSS, please, as calculated from the census entry, & the census entry reference?

Thank you both very much for your help.
The other info I have is that wife Lydia was Lydia Hyde of Daventry who was bapt in 1788. The couple married in May 1815 in Great Linford, Bucks and had three children in Bucks, all baptised in Stony Stratford. Thomas bapt 21 Aug 1821, Sarah Anne bap 7 Apr 1820, Lydia, baptised same day.
John was a man servant and by 1824 the family is in Leicester where a further son John James was born.
Again, many thanks for any leads,
Christmassy

Hi Christmassy,
Could Carlton actually be Carterton, as opposed to Charlton.
Carterton is about 5-6 miles west of Witney, Oxfordshire.

Carlton was a village and is a suburb of Nottingham...which is the next county to Leicestershire

There is an East Carlton in Northamptonshire 2 miles east of Corby.

Many thanks,

Just been going through possible marriages in the OxFHS marriage index for possible parents of your John Moss.
You may need to use your imagination a bit here. ;)
Marriage - John Moss to Mary Flint. 1773. in CHIPPING NORTON. (Could Carlton, be a 'corruption' of Chipping Norton). Is there a 1788(ish), baptism in Chipping Norton for your John Moss.?
