I wonder if anyone can help...
My aunt has recently told me the sad tale of my great great grandfather's (William Eames born c1838) drowning in the early 1900s in the bay near Bangor Pier.
Seemingly there was a storm brewing and he and his son set out to check their boat before the storms arrived.... Sadly, he was drowned (I'm not 100% sure but I think his son was also)
Can anyone provide any further details on this please - maybe it was in the local newspaper at the time?
thanks in advance for any help

Hi,
Do you have his death certificate? If there was an Inquest a local newspaper would probably have carried a report; the county Record Office might have a copy of any Inquest.
It would be difficult to search the newspapers without a date.

Hi Nanny Jan
thanks for your prompt reply
Sadly, I don't have a death certificate - but have been searching - possibly one found Jun 1909 Bangor ref: 11b 309 I'm in the process of ordering this now....

Hi my mother was told the tale of the drowning also but was told that it was the son Moses Eames who died so learning of Williams fate also is very sad and news to us. I wonder what type of boat they were attending to?

Hi
how lovely to hear from someone who knows some of the family history... I would be delighted to hear more if you have any

Hi to all, Moses Eames( son of William Eames master mariner) married Maggie Jones Q2 1907 Bangor 11b 754. Both Moses and Maggie are recorded in 1911 census. There is a death ref. for a Moses H Eames Q4 1935 52yrs Bangor 11b 538. Hope this helps your research.
-
I wonder if this person may be in your family? Have just come across a memorial inscription in Llanfair is gaer (Near Caernarfon) for Mary Eames, daughter of Nathaniel Eames and Ellin, late of Cefn Madryn, Llaniestyn, died 28th Dec 1828 aged 33.
-
Hi there, Thank you for your reply. I don't have any of those Eames names in my research.
-
Hi
Can confirm the Free BMD info quoted for both William and Moses. Age at death quoted agree with ages given in 1891 and 1901 Censuses for both. Will have a look at the local papers next week.
Have recently been looking at Parish Registers for Pwllheli Registration District area and have noticed quite a few Eames' in that area.

I concur that the results from free BMD confirm above posts. To confirm if indeed William Eames and son both met their tragic end together I think a newspaper report from the time would be the most revealing option. Not sure how to go about this?
Also, not seen the 'H' as in Moses H Eames in any other records for my Moses other than death record- is this normal? I think further research required here and maybe birth cert. Thanks

hi there, There is a birth ref for Moses Henry Eames Q1 1884 Bangor 11b 442.

Hi
Failed to find anything in local paper re the 1909 and 1935 deaths.
Burial records for Glanadda Cemetery, Bangor, show that a William Eames, Sailor, aged 70yrs, of 9 Club Street, Hirael, Bangor, was buried there on 16/06/09. It was the third opening of the grave. There is no record of a Moses Eames having been buried there in 1935. There is no MI booklet for this cemetery.
Census info for those with interest, and not in possession of it:
1841 Llanengan - Ty Newydd (Room) - John Emes (iron? miner), 30-34; Ellin, 25-29; Marg(or Mary), 4 ; William 3; John 1 - all born in County. Various minerals were mined in the area, but it is mainly associated with lead and manganese mining.
1851 Llanengan - Tai Morfa -John Ems (pauper), 44; Eleanor 35; John 10; Dorothy 8; Evan 5; Moses 3; all born Llanengan. There is a William Ems, Farm Servant, 12 at Cim, Llanengan.
1861 Llanengan - Congol Cae - Eleanor Eames, widow, Miner's wife, 45; Moses 13; Henry 7; Eleanor 4; Robert 2.
Rhiw.com website 1861 Census info (haven't checked actual Census), show John Eames 20 and Evan Eames as servants at Penrhyn Mawr, Llanengan. Also Margaret Eames, 24, servant, at Bwlch y Tocyn, Llanengan.
I assume that William Eames, the son, is the same as William Eames, aged 33 who appears at Bangor in the 1871 Census. Place of birth is given as Pwllheli, Carnarvonshire. Llanengan is within the Registration District of Pwllheli.
Will end posting here and carry on in later posting.

Hi,
Carrying on from my previous post:
Checked Rhiw.com info (1861). Evan aged 16, Marg/Mary not Margaret.
Can't find a William Eames that I'm happy with in 1861 Census. Perhaps he's at sea.
There is a marriage at Liverpool, Dec 1869 qtr., between a William Eames and either a Margaret Davies or Isabella Johnston. There is a Margaret Davies, born Anglesey, Lodger, of the right age, living in Toxteth in 1861; born Anglesey (some parts of Angesey came under Bangor Registration District). There is one also living at Bangor, born Bethesda (transcribed as Biddleston !), also Bangor Registration District.
Moving on to 1871 Census - Bangor:
25 Fountain Street -William Eames, Master Mariner, 33, Pwllheli; Margaret, 26, Bangor; Mary, 3; Ellen, 1 . Both children born Bangor.
1881 Census, Bangor - 50 Ambrose Street - Margaret Emes, married, 36, mariners wife; Mary, 13; Ellen, 11; John, 9; Elizabeth , 7; Evan, 5; William, 13mo.; Robert (born Llanengan), 21, seaman, brother in law. All Emes' born Bangor. Margaret down as 'Head', so 'Robert brother in law'. Assume husband is at sea. William Snr. had a brother Robert who is down as 2 years old in 1861 Census.
1891 Census - same address - William, 53, seaman; Margaret, 47; Ellen, 22; William, 11; Moses, 7; Dorothy, 4.
1901 Census - Bangor - 1 Fair View Road: William, 62, sailor; Margaret, 57; William, 23, Journeyman(?) Painter(houses); Moses, 18, Slate Yard Labourer; Dora, 13.
1911 Census - Bangor - 9 Club Street, Hirael: Dorothy, single, 23, Collar Ironer, Steam Laundry.
More to follow.

hi, I am also tracing this Eames name from Llanengan to present day, so interesting to read buriel place for William Eames. I note third opening of grave. I have 2 death refs John Eames Q4 1886 15 yrs Bangor 11b 319
Evan Eames Q1 1887 11yrs Bangor 11b 367
It would appear William and Moses are the only surviving sons of William and Margaret Eames, but I don't have the death certificates to prove that. My guess would be accident at sea.
-
Hi, William Eames born Llanengan c1838 married Margaret Williams born Bangor c1873 in St Nicholas Church Liverpool 26th November 1865.
My mother is certain that Margaret Eames nee Williams is buried in Glanadda cemetary so yes it seems logical that William was buried there also. Thanks EmyrBorth.
She is also certain that there is a Moses Eames buried in Llandegai Cemetery in Bangor- this may be the grave for the 1935 death?
I have recently found an Eames family Welsh bible, in which my grt grandmother Dora Eames b. circa 1887 has listed a number of important dates to the family. It does confirm the death dates of John and Evan Eames. The parents lost 3 children at a young age- the other being a baby girl Leah in 1878 aged just 5 months. Very sad.

Hi
Re. reply 13 by Taffess.
Will have a look at the burial record for those years. Unfortunately there is no plan with the records at the Archives. I'm told that information is available at office in Bangor Crematorium, which can be inspected free by appointment. Apparently there is a £40 charge for request for a search.
In 1911 Census Moses was on a ship at Holyhead, the Ellen Vannin. There was a ship of this name (Manx Gaelic for 'Isle of Man') which went down near Liverpool Bar (Dec 1909 ?), all on board drowned (35), belonging to the Isle of Man Steam Packet Co. I assume that the 1911 ship was a replacement for the one lost.
I've got 1911 info on Margaret and daughter Ellen, but something's not quite right with what I've recorded, so I need to check it out.
I've seen in the card index at the Archives reference to a family tree for an Eames family from near Groeslon. I'll check that out.
Emyr
PS
When 'Sending' above, note came up saying a new reply had been posted. Will check out Llandygai. If you know when Margaret died can you inform me of the date, if possible before midday tomorrow and I'll check the burial record for that year.

Hi there, I have a death ref. for Margaret Eames Q1 1919 74 yrs Bangor 11b 792. I don't have the certificate, but it looks to be the correct one.

They could be my Eames family Emyr, Owen & Barbara Eames of Glasfryn, Groeslon. Haven't taken this Eames branch back very far as it was Barbara who was my blood relation, but do know that Owen's grandparents were John Eames and Elizabeth Evans, who were married at St. Twrog's Church, Llandwrog on the 12th January 1816.

Hi Wheldon, You maybe interested in gledhill.com where there is information on a Nathaniel Eames born 1650 approx who was living in the parish of Llanllyfni Caernarvonshire in 1701.

Hi
John, Evan, William and Margaret Eames were buried in same grave at Glanadda in 1886, 1887, 1909 and 1919 respectively. The grave was then full.
Info on William previously supplied:
John buried 14/12/1886, aged 16, of 5(?) Ambrose St. Hirael, Bangor;
Evan buried 02/04/1887, aged 11, of 52(?) Ambrose St.;
Margaret buried 12/03/1919, widow, aged 74, of 43 Fountain Street.
Moses was buried in the new cemetery near Llandygai:
Moses Henry Eames, Railwayman, buried 26/10/1935, aged 51. His residence was 24 Ffordd Tegid, Bangor, place of death C & A Infirmary.
Might have died as result of an accident. I've seen reference to 2 workers being struck by a train in a tunnel at Bangor. Will check it out, and also see if I can locate the graves so as to record the inscriptions - might take time.
Will carry on with part 3 of my previous posts seperately.

Hi,
Part 3.
1911 Census, Margaret Eames at Slate Yard Cottage, Menai Bridge, Widow, Visitor, aged 67, born Bangor.
She is staying with, it appears, her daughter Ellen(aged 42) and son in law John Edwards(50), and their 8 children ranging from 19 years to 9 days old. One of the children has the name William Eames Edwards. Perhaps she's there, rather than with Dorothy in Club Street because of the recent birth. Place of birth of John and children, Anglesey, Llandysilio(?). John's employment status is worker, a Writing Slate Manufacturer.
Moving back to Llanengan:
There's a birth recorded in Parish Register - 19/03/1875 Jane, daughter of Evan Emes, Mariner and Mary, of Trwyn y Garreg. Also from BMD, a marriage Q1 1875, Pwllheli Registration District between Evan Emes and Mary Parry.

Hi there, I have Jane Eames with grandparents Thomas and Jane Parry in 1881RG11 5558 64 p11. There is a death ref for Mary Eames Q2 1877 23yrs Pwllhieli 11b 353, but no info on Evan Eames. There is a marriage ref for Jane Eames to John Francis Longer Q3 1895 Pwllheli 11b 633 and a death ref i.e. Jane Longer Q4 1907 32yrs Pwllheli 11b 262. Not able to find any info on John Eames b 1840 Moses b 1847 Eleanor/Ellin b 1856/57 There is a birth ref for Owen Eames Q3 1867 Pwllheli 11b 482 possible he was son to John or Moses Eames. So far not been able to trace all the Eames males born in Llanengan.

Hi, RE: 1911 Census where Margaret Eames is a visitor at daughter Ellens house 'Perhaps she's there, rather than with Dorothy in Club Street because of the recent birth' Aside from the joy at visiting a new grand daughter- Margaret was also actuallyand interestingly a trained midwife herself.
Having searched the Parish records I was extremely disappointed not to find any record in Llanengan of the marriage of William Eames and siblings parents John (born c1811) and Ellin/Eleanor (born c1816) Emes. Does anyone have any further information to go on? Perhaps they were married in a neighbouring parish or even else where?
There was one new record found- a death in 1835 of a Mary Eames at the age of 74- a possible family relation, the mother of John perhaps?
-
Hi Law 81, There is a christening record on family search.org i.e. John Eames christening 1 Jan 1808 Llanengan father John Thomas mother Mary Eames. Could this be the Mary Eames death ref in 1835/

Thanks Taffess thats fascinating will check it out plus re visit archives, many thanks

Hi
Found marriages, Llanengan, of Evan and Henry Eames, also of Jane Eames, daughter of Evan. Also baptism of Ellen, daughter of Evan.
Also civil marriages of Dorothy,Robert and possibly John.
Details to follow in couple of days.

Hi Emyr,
I have the marriage and birth cert for Henry Emes, as it's the line I'm following. Would the details be of use to your research? All I have on Evan is marriage ref. Haven't found anything on him since that date. Ellin Eames has her grandson with her i.e. Owen Eames. My guess is father John Eames, but again no info found on John Eames. It's possible Evan and John were lost at sea and what of Moses Eames b 1847/48. Henry's marriage states sailor, but 4 yrs later he is on dry land for rest of his life!
Owen Eames b Q3 1867 Pwllheli 11b 482 married Ann Jones Q3 1892 Pwllheli 11b 608

Hi Tafess,
Have no interest in the Eames family. As I live in the area and am a regular visitor to Caernarfon Archives, I looked for information in reply to request from initiator of the topic.

Thanks EmyrBorth for your reply. I now have a death ref for John Eames, but still nothing no death ref for Evan b 1845 and Moses b 1847/48.

Hi,
Visited Glanadda Cemetery about 3 weeks ago; spent about an hour and a half looking for the Eames grave, but without success. Called at the office at Bangor crematorium/Bangor New cemetery, near Llandygai, today. Official there very helpful and gave me information that enabled me to identify both graves.
Grave at new cemetery:
The stone is quite new and appears to have been erected after burials in 1999 and 2000. As Rootschat policy is not to allow naming of living people and those who have recently died, I'll leave blanks in the inscription and supply info by PM.
"In loving memory of ------ ------ Eames, dear father and taid('grandfather for those not familiar with the Welsh language), who passed away October 6th 1999, aged 57 years. "Rest in Peace". ------- Eames 27-3-1920 - 23-7-2000, dear mother of ------, ----- and ----- . "Forever in our Hearts".
Underneath are written 3 names, but no details. I assume that these were family members that had previously been buried in that grave. William Moses Eames, who I have previously mentioned as being buried in this grave in 1935, but as Moses Henry Eames (?). The other 2 names were Margaret Eames and James Henry Eames.
When leaving I happened to notice another Eames grave.
In memory of John, beloved son of W & K Eames, 11, Tabernacle Street, Bangor, 1919 -1946. Also his beloved father William Eames, 1880-1948. Also his beloved mother Kate Eames, 1882-1961. "Peace perfect Peace".
On the grave surround is written, 'Also beloved daughter Nellie, 1906-1981.
I'm having trouble with the Rootschat system when typing something this long, so I'll carry on in a seperate Reply.
I'll recheck some of the details sometime.

Hi
Moving on to Glanadda Cemetery.
There does not appear to be a stone on the Glanadda grave. At the location I've worked out for the grave, there are 3 or 4 graves with no stone. Lying on the grass in that area there is a small stone with the initials, JE, EE, WE and ME, the initials of the 4 Eames' buried there. I've made a note of the info on surrounding graves and checked the plot numbers for those graves in the records at Caernarfon Archives. Will revisit Glanadda sometime armed with this info to recheck.
I mentioned previously in relation to Moses, who was a railway worker, that I'd seen something in the local paper re death of two workers in Bangor railway tunnel. I've rechecked paper around time of Moses' death but found no reference to him or the accident. I probably read about the accident when looking at the paper for some other time period.
I notice that in one of my previous replies that I said that I had some info re Eames family which I would include in a later posting and that I have not done so. I'll check it out.

Hi Emyr Borth,
Thank you for your interesting research re the Eames family. I am now able to fill a few more places on the Eames family chart.

Has anyone any details about Steven Eames c 1600 and his wife Margaret? Anything about any Eames around that time would be most helpful. Thank you.
