Post by: Harriet Thomson on Friday 05 November 10 20:26 GMT (UK)
Is there anyone who might be able to help me. I have a family with I believe four children all born in Calcutta. I am very keen to obtain their birth certificates but I don't know where to start. Can anybody help

HI,,Can you post what details you have? ;)

The names of the children are as follows:
Edwin Herbert (Henry) Shrager b.1895
Archibald Lewis Shrager b. 1890
Oswald Julius Shrager b.1891
Renee b. 1893

Parents Isaac Shrager and Rosalie Grunberg

There are other brothers to Isaac which might get confusing. FYI James, Adolph, Cecil and Jacob John

But it is Isaacs children I was hoping to get birth certs for if I can

Thank you so much for your help

Hi,

The 1901 census has Archibald & Oswald at a Boarding School in Eastborne in Sussex. Place of birth for both is India.

Could not find their births on either pilot, beta family search or the India Office Family History Search.

No luck either with overseas & military births.

Some of the family appear in the 1901 and some in 1911, but that is it. The family primarily is based between Ceylon, Singapore, Calcutta, India, Alexandria, Egypt and Broome, Aus. They were in the furniture business exporting wood etc
Edwin was a Ltn in the Middlesex Regiment

Hi
Yes I have that one and the one showing their Fathers grave in the same year. Mostly from newspaper articles. But the birth certs are definitely more difficult. Maybe I need someone out in Calcutta to be able to get copies. I just can't seem to get anywhere on this one.
Thanks

In general there are no BIRTH certificates available from India.  What you would usually hope to find are Baptism records - with the main source being the India Office Records held at the British Library.

Recent years have seen the further indexing of these records on www.familysearch.org, a wide range of records is available on the FIBIS data base www.fibis.org and some on the British Library IndiaFamily search https://indiafamily.bl.uk/.  However, all these sources tend to respect the 100 year rule and don't include birth events more recent than this.  So, Sal, you will need to do a personal search at the BL or get someone to do it for you.

Anyway, do keep checking the FIBIS site as new stuff is always coming on line.
