I have been searching for philip and Anne Malone who left for Canada between 1825-1851. Last night an elderly relative found a passage in her grand mothers papers with this phrase. " Owen Malone from Gort, Clonfathy, County Tyrone petitioned for his brothers Patrick, Barney and Philip to be allowed passage to Canada." To me this may indicate the home lands but I can find nothing with that spelling. Is it a spelling error or have place names changed since 1825-1851.
Any help would be appreciated.

There's a townland called Gort in Clonfeacle Parish, Co. Tyrone.

Hi,
In the Calendar of Wills in PRONI there is mention of The Rev Anthony Malone R.C.C. of Gorte, Co. Tyrone, bachelor, who died 27 Feb 1875. Letters of Administration were granted to Peter Malone of Cookstown, nephew of the deceased. Estate was under £800.
I wondered if Gorte is a misprint.

I got an update e mail from that relative today after she thought about our conversation and she remembers her grand mother saying something like this "
Traditionally they were somehow connected with the monastery of Clonmacnoise and the Malone name itself can be loosely translated to the Gaelic "monk".
Does this help perhaps narrow down an area to search? I get confused easily with the town lands, baronies and such used in Ireland.

The monastery at Clonmacnoise is in Co. Offaly (King's County), and a long way from Co. Tyrone...

There may be a tradition or family story that "the Malones" (meaning anyone with that surname) came from Clonmacnoise but as Shane says, it's nowhere near Co. Tyrone.
-
Ok, thanks then it is probably just something that was made up or passed down as a story. I will now attempt to concentrate on searching for Malones in Tyrone and see if that turns up anything.

I found a record of a Malone boy that matched the Philip I am searching for but I do not know the area. I know it is in the south not Tyrone but it is the closest thing I have found so far. In 1823 a Peter Robinson took some settlers to canada. The Malones started in that area and a Owen Malone was one of them. It is possible Owen was Philips brother and as I stated before he wrote asking for his family to be sent to Canada. Can anyone identify this Church, the best I can tell it is near Cork where the early settlers mainly came from.
"CARLOW (COI) , Parish/Church/Congregation - TULLOW " is this a catholic parish?

... "CARLOW (COI) , Parish/Church/Congregation - TULLOW " is this a catholic parish?
Carlow= County Carlow (southwest of Dublin)
COI = Church of Ireland
Parish (Church of Ireland and civil)= Tullow

Still nowhere near Tyrone.

Ok thanks, im still searching and it is possible he was not a practicing catholic until he married his wife? He was for sure in the 1852 census of Canada. I will have to return to that site and search for his brothers but at least this Malone find was dated 1792 the year of his birth.

I need help guys! I have searched through ancestry and any free place I can and have found nothing that helps. It is unknown other then family legend the Malone's came from Fermanagh or Tyrone county between 1825 (Peter Robinson settlers) and 1852 when they appeared on the Canada 1852 census. The family is Malone, Philip born 1792 married Anne McMahon. Their children are Joseph-1832, Edward-1834, Patrick-1836, Philip-1838, Barney-1842. Canadian records verify no towns just listed as Ireland.
Could anyone with a subscription to other records take a moment and see if this family shows up?
Thanks in advance and wishing everyone a healthy and safe Christmas.

Ancestry have very few Irish records which is hy you've not had any luck there. Most subscription/pay per view websites have terms and conditions which prevent us from asking for lookups.
Since the dates you are looking for are well before the start of civil registration you'd need to search for church records (unfortunately many for this period do not exist).
Added- since the location of this family is still not confirmed I'm going to move this thread to Ireland-General board.

Just a thought - Clonfathy could be a variant spelling of Clonavaddy a townland in the Civil parish of Donaghmore Poor law Union of Dungannon in Tyrone.

As you probably know, the Malone family had strong links to Clonmacnoise. Their seat at Ballinahown is adjacent to Clonmacnoise, and they lived there for centuries.
Take a look at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballinahown
http://www.brabazonarchive.com/Pages/Malone%20of%20Baronston.htm
I think they might be included in Burke's Landed Gentry too.
I don't know if your Malones are related but it is worth investigating.
-
Your right it is worth investigating and I wish I could but so far I have found no positive links to any place in Ireland to my Malone family.
Time and time again I am told the same two things, the family you are searching is too early for our records and/or you need the Church or at least the town they came from to dig deeper.
It is my hope that as time goes by records from say 1750-1825 become more available online. For now i just keep looking randomly every place i go online hoping to bump into a lead.

Unfortunately very few church records from 1750-1825 survive so the records you need simply may not exist.

Don't rule out Mallon, of which there are plenty in that part of the world, including mine.

Hi Karen
I had not seen that info, where did you find that?
