Paul, If this is the right cottage you may be in luck, it's available to rent as a holiday cottage. I just did an internet search and up it popped.

Or maybe it's this one http://www.btinternet.com/~Pamela.Mackinnon/pub/
I think you will have to search the net to work out which one it may be as it seems a popular name

Hello
To narrow the search down the easiest way would be to check the census records and check which other properties are nearest. If he was at that property for the 1841 census - which can be acessed at www.freecen.org.uk, it give the opportunity to check the houses on the enumerators route. This would narrow down and help pinpoint the cottage.

Hi Paul
As you have seen from Steve's searches, there are likely to be a number of properties with the same name. It might help people searching if you added a few more details. By the sounds of it, you have the death certs for your ggggrandparents. Which parish did Burnside Cottage show in on the death certs? What were their names? Anything you can add might help with the searches that people may do :)

Is this their 1881 entry?
Dugald Blair 65, House Carpenter & Joiner
Jeane Blair 57
Address: Burnside Cottage, South Knapdale
I found this link http://genealogicalexpedition2008.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html If you look at the diary entry for Friday, September 19, 2008, it includes a photo and details for a Burnside Cottage. It is in the right area. Whilst not linked to your family, it would be interesting if it turned out to be connected to the same property :)
As Steve suggest, looking at the whole page of a census entry will give you clues regarding surrounding addresses to help you better locate the actual cottage.

Might well be the right area :) This looks to be Dugald and Jean in 1871:
Dugald Blair 51, river carpenter
Jane Blair 49
Ann Blair 24
Duncan Blair 19
Sarah Blair 15
Jane Blair 12
Mary Blair 10
Address: Inverneil House (burnside Cottage), South Knapdale

Hi Paul
Does the 1881 census entry match the entry I posted for 1881? Also, is it the right family in 1871 from the other census entry above?
Monica :)

the census i have is as follows
Mary Kerr, wife of Ship master, aged 58 born Glassary Argyllshire at Burnside Cottage, Glassary Argyll
together with Mary Kerr aged 17, Mary Kerr 28, Dugald McCallum 23, Janet McCallum 20, Janet Murray aged 14

Completely the wrong family I had :P
I can't see any trace of Burnside Cottage in the censuses before 1881. It shows from this date up to 1901.
In the 1881 census, there are 5 households showing as living at a 'Burnside Cottage' in Glassary, including the Kerrs.

Hello Paul
Your only options left - I think, are,
http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/boundary_map_page.jsp?u_id=10091640&c_id=10107260
Use their boundy map facility and zoom down. The parish remains in pink and you spend time looking around and seeing if there is more than 1 Burnside Cottage in the parish.
The other option is to go to the National Library of Scotlands map page and use their zoomable 6" to 1 mile search.
http://www.nls.uk/maps/os/6inch/index.html
Good luck.

Hello Paul,
If you Google "Ordnance Survey", and go to the OS search page, type in Kilmichael Glassary. The map that appears should show a village about 3 miles north of Lochgilphead, and just east of the A816 Oban road. Between this road and the village, is the hamlet of Bridgend.
If you then go onto the "Old-Maps.co.uk" site and type in Kilmichael Glassary, three much older maps will be visible c1870 under the main map that is shown. These old maps show Bridgend as a much smaller grouping of houses. This may be the Bridgend that you are looking for.
In addition to the above if you visit the "Geograph" site, and again type in Kilmichael Glassary, you should gain access to 3 photographs of Bridgend as it is at present.
Hope this helps you in your quest.

In view of your other Dunoon connection there was a Burnside in Dunoon. Is this the one you are looking for?

Paul,
This may be the map your looking for - http://www.nls.uk/maps/os/25inch/view/?sid=74481375
It shows the hamlet of Bridgend just south of Kilmichael Glassary.
If you zoom in on Bridgend you can see the Inn marked

Hi Paul.
It seems I have the wrong area completely! :o
-
Hi Paul
I live in Ford, Argyll, which is just up the glen from Glassary, or Kilmichael.
The maps that would help you are the victorian ordnance survey maps of Scotland, sheet 37 covers Kilmichael Glassary.
These maps can be purchased from Caledonian maps, enquiries {--at--} caledonianmaps.co.uk, usually they are £5.95 each plus p&p.
