Christine,
On Free BMD, I can see a marriage of Margaret Andrews Sept Qtr 1878 at Salford (Ref 8d/190) but the "males" seem to be either William Cox or John Thomas Myles.
I can't see any Alexander McWilliams marriages in the Manchester area between 1860/90.

it does'nt normally tell you the marriage date on a birth cert?
are you certain that is the marriage date and not the birth date ?
what was the childs name?

I've also checked LancashireBMD which doesn't have anything. Looking at the image of the index for the relevant quarter there an Eliza Jane McWilliams as the only marraige with that surname. There is a Margaret Andrews as Alan has found - that is on LancashireBMD as to John T Myles.
Looks like either it isn't the Manchester we're expecting or there's something "off" (date place names etc) - I'm guessing the birth wasn't England & Wales so could it be another Manchester altogether?

hi
the daughter was born in dunoon scotland.
the father was scottish and mother irish.
the next child was born in isle of man.
the childs name was mary mcwilliams dob 23.4.1882
most of the marriage certs i have , have the parents date of marriage on them.
i have also tried under williamson/andrews.

Some of their children are on family search pilot as being baptised in the Isle of Man - so maybe it is Man (isle of ) you are after, rather than Man(chester)?

sorry, posted this 1 second after you posted, so obviously you know of the IOM connection.
will try Scotlands People for you

Scottish records have more info on them than English ones, are yours mainly Scottish births certificates you have with parents marriages details on?
You could try this site for I O M bmd's?

Hi Christine - unlikely to be the case given the details you've posted about the children - I was thinking about migrants - there are several Manchesters in the US and I expect there are others elsewhere.

I've tried Scotlands People, Lancashire BMDs on 'soundex' and 'vague' options, and free BMDs looking for any McWilliam to any Margaret - nearest I could find were:
Halifax June 1883, Alexander McWilliam to Margaret Smith
Lanchester (in desperation for a soundalike!) Dec 1882, Margaret Andrews to either John Palmer of Wiiliam Cowton ???
Sorry, couldn't find anything else.
Is is possible that Mary McWilliams is actually the child of Margaret Andrews and an earlier husband, so Alexander is her stepfather?

hi,
i also tried all the options on diff sites and found nothing.
beginning to think they made the marriage up.
dont know if they had to produce a marr cert when reg birth. ( i know i had to for my first)
i would like to thank everyone for their help. i think this is one of those brick walls you get every now and then.

I have countless Scottish births where the parents were "married" in England, One man married the same lass at four different places on four different dates! Saved having Illegitimate written against the bairns name on the registry

hi,
i,m begining to think that is what they have done. ???
