Have you checked the 1881 census for him?
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp
Single in 1901 - was he married in 1911? If so - when and to whom? Do you have a copy of his marriage cert showing his fathers name
There is a big difference between his 1901 age of 44 and then to 61 only 10yrs later. With a surname like Taylor - a 7yr difference in birthyears makes it difficult to trace
If he remained single - what is your interest in him? If he had no children then you cannot be a direct descendant so any other info re: your connection may help

Hi Carole
He was single on both the 1901 and 1911 census , He was a boarder with my Great Grandfather Thomas Brown
at 14 or 18 Briery Street,Lancaster, household members listed on 1901 census
Thomas Brown
Margaret Ann Brown
John Jno Brown
Lunnie Brown
John Thos Tylor age 44 born Kendal, Westmorland, estimated Birth abt 1857.
John Moreland
on the 1911 Census
There are two John Taylor's listed
John Taylor , brother in law age 58 born Kendal, Westmoreland.
John Taylor Lodger age 61.born Burton, Westmoreland
I did try to find him on the 1881 Census but no luck,
He was always known to the family as Tiler , My Grandfather John James Brown always spoke with great affection
about Tiler, so I just wanted to find out a little about his life.
The brother in law John Taylor was born John Birbeck in abt 1856 in Westmoreland ( Stanongate?)his mother was Elisabeth Birbeck she married William Taylor in 1858 so it looks like William may have formerly or informally adopted Elizabeths son.
so anything else I can find is a plus.
cheers
