Hello, trying to find my grandfather's birth and great grandmother's birth and death.
Robert Alexander Mckirdy was born in Scotland about 1881 and died in Ireland in 1924 aged 43. I can't find any record at all.
His parents were Alexander McKirdy (Largs) and Janet (Jessie) Kerr (Argyle). Janet was born about 1843 and married in 1860. Again I can't find any record of her birth or death.
Alex and Janet appear on the 1861 and 1871 census living in Glasgow. The 1871 Census also shows their niece, Margaret Kerr Taylor, aged 8.
Margaret Kerr Taylor's parents were Janet's sister, Christina Kerr and her husband John Taylor.
No record of them appears in any other scottish census after 1871 but Alex, son Robert and sister-in-law Christina appear on the 1901 and 1911 Irish census. Both Alex and Christina were widowed according to both census.
Any help would be very much appreciated appreciated.

Hamon, I think McKirdy's a Bute name, might be worth a look! Skoosh.
-
Hi Hamon had a wee look on Scotlands People
Nothing came up searching for Robert Alexander Mckirdy, between 1879 and 1882,
However there is 1 Robert Mckirdy came up in 1881 Born Cardross Dumbarton,
Gro no 494/00 0020, I only had a few credits left at the moment so could not view the entry,
I also have McKirdy's and agree with Skoosh that it seems to be mainly a bute name,

Hi Hamon
Welcome to RootsChat :)
The 1881 census doesn't help unfortunately. There are three potential Roberts showing but all with different parents:
Robert b. 1880 to Lachlan and Christina in Bonhill, Dumbartonshire
Robert b. 1880 to John and Jane in Rothesay, Buteshire
Robert b. 1881 to Charles and Margaret in Renton, Dumbartonshire
Have you managed to find parents Alexander and Janet (Jessie) in 1881?
Monica

Sorry, realise you said you hadn't found them after 1871... :P
How about this entry in 1881:
Alexr McKirdy 38, brass moulder b. Largs
Jannet McKirdy 37, b. Loch Gilphedd, Argyleshire
Christina Taylor 40, sister in law, laundress b. Loch Gilphedd G, Argyleshire
Robert Kerr 40, son of sister in law (age must be mistranscibed) b. Glasgow
Address: 44 W Bothwell St, Glasgow Anderston
If they married in 1860 and you have them in 1861/71...I'm beginning to think they may not have had children of their own perhaps ::)

Thank you all so much for your help.
My Alexr McKirdy according to his marriage registrations was born in Largs, Ayr, as was his father, also Alexr. His mother was Elizabeth Murray from Glasgow and they married in 1841. Thank you Skoosh and Prophetess, will have a look at Bute. My geography isn't all that good so will get the map out. Hopefully will get back to the UK early next year so will take you up on the offer.
Thank you also Monica, I found the Census, it was spot on, obviously was asleep when searched for it. Also found Robert's birth record, which shows him as illegimate but records his name as Kerr or Taylor. His name was give as Robert George Alexander. George may have been the father as Christina was widowed I think in 1864 but it's hard to read the details. I haven't come across any George in the line so far but yes I had thought he may have been adopted or Alexr & Christina's child ....
Janet and Christina's parents were Robert Kerr and Margaret McKechnie. As far as I know they were all born in Argyll, on the Lochgilphead 1851 Census as born in Glassary.
I did find a Janet in the 1891 Census who was the right age, she was recorded as a 'Wife' but there was no other family at the address, only a lodger.
Will keep digging, thanks once again to all.

Hello Sybil and Monica, do either of you have access to the Glasgow telephone directory, I am looking for a Thomas Muddiman. I think there would be two in Glasgow. Also, can you both email me. Thanks Liz

Hello again, hoping someone can help. I have found an entry on the Family Search site which looks promising.
Unfortunately it doesn't give a christian name, just surname, male, dob and place of birth. Does the film number given show any more information such as the parish register. Also, does the film number correspond to those held by Scotlands People and the GROS. I can't order a certificate until I get more details.
Thanks to all
-
Hi Liz
Why don't you post the details of what you have found on Family Search so we can understand better what you are looking at?
Monica :)
-
Thanks Monica,
No christian name, McKirdy, birth 15 Dec. 1881 Anderston, Glasgow Lanark
I can't find anything on SP, probably because there is no christian name and SP weren't too helpful. I also spoke to GROS and they said I couldn't order a certificate without all the details.
I am looking for my grandfather, Robert Mckirdy, and I found out from his father's poor relief application that Robert was born in Anderston. He died in Dublin in 1924 aged 43 so 1881 would be his birth year.
I was told by someone at the research centre here in WA that I wouldn't get anymore info from the film than I have but I'm not sure that is right.
Any suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks

You can look at this birth entry on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (which is much cheaper than ordering the cert and also you can view it on line). There is only one male birth for a McKirdy in Anderston between 1881-2 (I checked 1882 as sometimes registrations for events at the end of the year can spill over to the January registers of the following year). This birth entry shows for 1881 in Anderston.
If what you have is all that is showing, then likely as you have been told, that is likely to be all that shows on the film unfortunately.
Still worries me that Alexander and wife Janet showed with no children between their marriage up to 1881...
Like we have discussed before, think there is a chance that Robert could actually be the illegitimate child of Christina Taylor whose birth details you have already found. Given that you have found Alexander, sister in law Christina and son Robert on the Irish censuses for 1901 and 1911, it further adds to this.
Following this guessing ::) it could well be that Robert gave Alexander's name for his marriage details in later years.
One thing though, you mentioned poor relief application details for father Alexander. When were these from and what did they say about a possible son?

Hello Monica, I've been through most of the SP entries of births and deaths from 1877 to 1900 but can't find any children.
Janet died in Dublin in Dec 1897. Her sister Christina died in 1919 in the Dublin Union Workhouse. From the wording on the death cert it looks as if she wasn't there for long. I am going to try to get the details as they may show the next of kin.
The family returned to Glasgow but not sure when but they were there in 1917 when twins were born. I don't know if Alexr stayed in Ireland until Christina died.
Alex applied for poor relief in January 1920. It shows he was living with Robert in Kennedy Street and Robert was 41, married and had five children.
If Robert was 41 in 1920 he would have been born in 1879, but the whole family seemed to gain or lose five years when it suited them. Christina's son was definitely born in 1874, I found his registration. I have tried to find him as both Kerr and Taylor but no luck there either so still guessing.
I don't know where to go from here. I thought I had hit the nail on the head with the Family Search record. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

This is the birth in Anderston 1881
1881 MCKIRDY RICHARD OLIVER Male at ANDERSTON GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/10 0992
Father Charles McKirdy - Mother Helen Oliver

Thanks Sancti, had looked that one up but the birth date is August. The entry on the Family Search gives a birth date of 15th December 1881. I think I will order the LDS film to see if there are any clues.
Thanks again
-
There is no other McKirdy birth in Anderston so I wonder where the entry on familysearch came from
-
I think McKirdy is originally a Bute name! Skoosh.
-
I'm not sure where family search got the entry from Sancti but there is a definite birth date and area so I'm hoping the film will show the baptisimal records.
I've traced them back to School Lane in Largs Skoosh. I haven't got an exact date for the ggggf but it was around 1770. He died in 1846 aged 76. The only entry about that time was twins born 1773, Alex and Margett to Robert McKirdy, no mother's name. I think the Bute connection would kick in there but there are so many I wouldn't know where to start.
Thanks both

Hamon, just checked Black's Surnames, a Gilcrist Makwrerdy held the lands of Bransar on Bute in 1506.
Mainly found on Bute & Arran and every instance quoted spelled different. Patrick MacVarthie, portioner of Stravanan, Bute in 1622.
The name occasionally cited in the Icelandic Sagas as Myrkjartan, the name of an Irish king. Modern Gaelic, M'Urardaigh. How many folk can boast such a pedigree?
-
Thanks Skoosh, but I think I'll keep the tiara on hold for now or until I can prove the connection !!
-
Hello, just an update. I got hold of the film from family search but it didn't show anything for a McKirdy on 15/12/1881, only a strange entry registered by a police officer, with no names or addresses or even the registrar's details.
The only thing I can think of is trying the maternity hospital records. Can anyone tell me which hospital Anderston would have come under in 1881.
Thanks
-
Most likely a home birth and only reccord would be birth certificate
-
I thought of that Sancti but she was 38 when he was born and I can't find any record of other children born to them, if there had been miscarriages or still births I would have thought they would have opted for the hospital. Also her sister had her son in the Glasgow Maternity Hospital in 1874.
It's my last hope !!!
Thanks
-
What was his occupation on the Irish census records?
-
Hello Sancti, he was listed on the 1911 Irish census as a Mechanic and the 1901 as an Engine Fitter. He went back to Scotland sometime around 1917 until 1921 or 22 and then returned to Ireland, where my Aunt was born in 1922.
On his father's Poor Relief application in January 1920 in Scotland, his details were given as born in Anderston, 41 and married with 5 children and was working at Armstrong & Main, Petershill Road, as a Labourer.
Not sure if it will help.
Thanks
Liz

What were the names of Christina's children and DOB's
-
Hello Sancti. the children were:
Margaret Kerr Taylor - born 01/11/1962 - died 31/01/1876
Robert George Alexander Kerr - birth cert says 'or Taylor' - Illegimate. Born 05/06/1874. I can't trace him at all. I've tried the deaths on SP but there were so many Robert Kerr's born that year. I tried the area's they had lived in and a few others but no luck.
I also contacted the National Archives in Ireland because Christina's death certificate said she had died in the Dublin Workhouse. She had been admitted with the flu in 1919 and died a couple of weeks later. Unfortunately, they only kept records of the family if the family were also taken into the workhouse. He didn't appear on either of the Irish census forms.
That's all I can tell you.
Thanks
Liz
