I'm trying to find the parents of James Freeman. According to the 1851, 61 and 71 censuses, he was born in Oldpark, Shropshire.
He married Louisa (?),possibly in Birmingham, as that's where their 2 children were born, in 1830 and 1833. I believe she died between 1833 and 1838, because in 1838 he married Mary Cottrell, in Birmingham.
Any help would be appreciated.
Bob.

because in 1838 he married Mary Cottrell, in Birmingham.
His marriage cert will show his fathers name which may help to find him in parish records - but no guarantees
-
Hi CaroleW,
How come I didn't think of that? As it was his second marriage, it hadn't occurred to me.
Thanks,
Bob.

OK, got the certificate, shows the Father's name as William, a Miner.
IGI has a marriage of William Freeman and Mary Round (Bround) 3/12/1807 Madeley, which would fit with James' birth.
Again, IGI has a baptism for a James of 6/11/1808 Dawley Magna.

Hi Bob
I couldn't find Old Park in the directory of Registration districts to check whether Madeley/Dawley Magna were in that area - or vice versa
I found this link from another message board http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-30788.html and one reply says
Old Park is an area of what is now Telford & Wrekin in Shropshire.
In 1870 it came under Malinslee, which was a township and ecclesiastical district taken out of the parish of Dawley, which it adjoins. You could therefore try both Malinslee and Dawley, (you could also try Little Dawley or Dawley Parva).
So it looks like a good IGI find

Hi CaroleW,
Thanks for the link. I'm fairly confident about the IGI refs (or as confident as is possible with the IGI), they were both Extracted.
I hadn't realised there was so much mining in that area, so that fits with the father William being from there.
Best wishes,
Bob.

Hello
I am also interested in James Freeman born c 1808 Old Park
shropshire.
I beleive him to be My gtx2 grandmother Mary Freeman
I think she may have been from the first marriage.
To Mary Edmunds ?????
I have not been abl to unravel the mystery
Regards Sue
-
Hi Sue,
The FamilySearch website (IGI) has two James Freemans from the Old Park area.
One baptised 18 Jan 1807 Dawley Magna, parents James and Elizabeth
and a second baptised 6 November 1808 Dawley Magna, parents William and Mary.
(Old Park lies in the Dawley Magna area)
The second one is the line I have been following, working backwards from the censuses and the marriage certificate for James' second marriage, in 1838, to Mary Cottrell, which gives his father's name as William. James was a Carpenter and William a Miner.
I found a marriage for James Freeman to Mary Edmunds on the IGI :- 3 April 1831, St Phillips, Birmingham Warwickshire.
IGI also has the following births to parents James and Mary, all baptised at St Phillips:-
Mary Freeman baptised 2 May 1831
Ann Freeman baptised 11 August 1834
George Henry baptised 26 September 1834
Elizabeth Freeman baptised 8 February 1836
Charles Alfred freeman baptised 16 January 1837
Please let me know if we are following the same line.
Happy hunting,
Bob.

Hi Bob
I believe the James 1808 father William Is the father of my Mary as on her death certificate fathers name James
but then it complicates an mother is Mary.
She married in 1854 to Aaron Butler and in 1878 emigrated to Aust.
with her issue she named them all almost the same and her siblings???
so I do believe she is related to him but to refine that relationship is the hard
d/o Mary Cotterill or Mary ????
I have tried in vain to contact members of the family in England but the old
aunts when the were alive claimed Mary Cotterill very messy jigsaw.
Thank you Sue
-
Hi Sue,
I think I've found the link.
James Freeman's first wife was Louisa (don't know surname) and they had 3 children, William Henry 1830, Joseph Benjamin 1832 and Mary Jane 1835, all christened at St Martins Birmingham (I've only just found Mary Jane on Familysearch). I think this Mary is your one.
I think Louisa died between 1835 and 1838, because James married Mary Cottrell on 19 Aug 1838 and I've found 6 children:- Ann Maria 1840, Martha Kezia 1840, Ellen Elizabeth 1844, Thomas Cotterill 1847, Esther Mary 1851 and George Henry 1857, all born in Birmingham.
I suspect that Mary Jane called Mary Cottrell her mother, as she didn't know her own and may not have been told the truth.
This is the James Freeman with father William and mother Mary Bround/Round (IGI isn't specific). William and Mary married 3 December 1807 in Madeley, Shropshire.
What do you think?
Bob.
-
Hello Bob
I think that is probably correct.
I had found that Louisa some years ago but as the oldies insisted that Mary was the gt gran
I did not follow that line of decent.
The sibling names are almost exactly the same as she named her own children that there has to be
a connection.
I do believe that you have confirmed what I suspected but could not prove.
May I ask are you related this family please?
Thank you
Regards Sue.
-
Hi Sue,
No, I'm not related, but my wife is. William Henry Freeman is her great x2 grandfather.
Bob.

Hello Sue & Bob. I believe my husband is also related to Aaron Butler & Mary Freeman. I have their son's (Joseph Benjamin Butler) marriage certificate and it shows these parents. I have only just today corresponded with another relative and this is what she had posted (not on this site).

My gt x 3 grand parents and their family lived in "Ladywood" Birmingham on
the 1871 census.
Their daughter Mary Jane with Husband Aaron BUTLER and their family

Just wondering if you have any information or documents/certificates for any of the family. I didn't have any other family for Aaron & Mary so it is really good to have come across your post.

I am really pleased I came across this site also (just by pure accident) and found another family.

Hi Anna, and welcome to RootsChat. I too found it by accident and have found the "Chatters" to be very friendly and extremely helpful.
My data for the Freemans matches yours, except I have the mother of William Henry, Joseph Benjamin and Mary Jane, as Louisa, who died in 1837 ( I have the ref, but not the death cert). I do have the 1838 marriage cert for James and Mary Cottrell.
I'm still trying to find a marriage record for James and Louisa.
Don't know if you have access to Ancestry, but there is a tree on there that includes info on Aaron's descendants (Gray Family Tree).
If I come up with anything new, I'll let you know.
Best wishes,
Bob.

Hi Trish,
I've only been looking for this marriage for about 3 years, on and off, so it's nice to know that a record may exist.
It's nice to make a dent in a brick wall and it also gives me a possible new branch to get my teeth into.
Regards,
Bob.
