Hi all,
My grandfather has been researching his family for as long as I can remember and has hit a brick wall in regards to his grandparents.
We are trying to find out what happened to Mary O'Neill as a start.
We have a marriage certificate for George Willmont Johnson and Mary O'Neill registration #330, year 1857 in Victoria.
Details are
Date: 9 March 1857.
Location: St Peters Melbourne
Grooms Details: George Willmott Johnson, born Ambleside, age 25, his parents George & Catherine Woods
Brides Details: Mary O'Neill, born County Carlow, age 19, her parents Edward O'Neill & Ann Murphy
The next event we have for George Willmott Johnson is his marriage to Margaret A Kelly in Young NSW, in 1884. Registration #7451.
I would like to try and find out what happened to Mary O'Neill between the years 1857 to 1884 if at all possible, did she die ? did she remarry ? did she just vanish ?
Thanks in advance for your time and suggestions of where to look.
Michael.

Sorry Sue,
Same person.
The Parents for the 2nd marriage for the bride are Patrick kelly & Ann unknown.
I descend from the 2nd marriage.
Basically George Willmott Johnson gets to Australia somehow before 1857 (hasn't been identified), marries Mary O'neill in 1857, migrates to New South Wales and ends up getting married a 2nd time to Margaret A Kelly in Young 1884. He has 3 children with Margaret (Caroline, James, Jane) possibly more, all of which end up in orphanage and he dies of cancer. Not sure what happens to Margaret A Kelly either at this time.
So I would like to start and try and find out what happened to his first wife, then the 2nd wife and finally, find out how he got here and find a link back to the U.K. at some point.

Thanks Tredsoftly
That is one of his daughters and might give me another lead, but if in 1945 they are reaching out for help, 65 years later mightn't add much light.

Jenn,
Ambleside is historically within the county of Westmorland often referred to as Ambleside, WES. :)

Thanks for that Merlin, I had no idea and was going to google it.
Diveboy to add the children (were placed in Randwick Asylum, Elizabeth, James & Caroline) before being fostered out when he died.
Did you get the records for this? if so did they state whether or not the mother was deceased?

I'm going over my grandfathers researching and looking for the answers, as well as work has been busy this week, so sorry for the lack of response.
Occupation on the 1st marriage certificate is 'Sail Maker'
Occupation on the 2nd marriage certificate is 'Bushman' which was crossed out and 'Labourer' written in.
ok Margaret died on the 26th March 1895 related to heart disease.

another update to thicken the plot.
I do know for fact the following
1. there is a stephen johnson known to george's daughter (found post card to and from him)
2. there is a "E. johnson" on Mary O'neill and George Johnsons marriage certificate as a witness.
I have found an arrival of johnsons on board the "john taylor" in 1852.
JOHNSON ---- 52 SEP 1852 JOHN TAYLOR B 008 007
JOHNSON ELIZABETH 17 SEP 1852 JOHN TAYLOR B 008 007
JOHNSON GEORGE 19 SEP 1852 JOHN TAYLOR B 008 007
JOHNSON SAML 24 SEP 1852 JOHN TAYLOR B 008 007
JOHNSON SAML 26 SEP 1852 JOHN TAYLOR B 008 007
JOHNSON STEPHEN 26 SEP 1852 JOHN TAYLOR B 008 007
How do I prove or disprove this is the family that i am looking for.
The dates for "george"s birthday pretty much match.
Thanks for your assistance
Michael.
