Could someone please advise me how to explore a distant relative. Name John Byrne he was in the British Army and served in Malta circa 1890. While there married a Maltese lady surname Zammit. Afterwards serving in India, where their three children were born. Eldest son John born 1893, second son born 1900 and last child a daughter born 1902. Next news of family is when all five appear in the Irish 1911 census. As they returned to live in Ireland I assume with a name like Byrne he was Irish born. If his wife and family were with him in India, would this indicate he was an officer of some class, or could enlisted men bring their wives and families while the husband served. Perhaps he was serving with one of the Irish Regiments.

Find My Past has service records online but have just had a free search of John Byrne and there are lots born in ireland...have you the marriage certificate it may have his regimental details on.

By the end of the 19th Century enlisted men needed the CO's permission to marry, but once given his family could follow him around the empire. You should search the overseas/regimental BMDs on sites such as Findmypast. The index will give the father's regiment. With a common name you should ask at your local record office where the nearest library is that gives free FindMyPast access - assuming you are UK based.
btw...the Irish census gives different information to you. It says they were married 1892/3 and John was born 1897/8. It also confirms he was born in Dublin. The two child deaths may have been in Malta.
