On Dec 19, 1884, Martha Edmunds commenced duties as Monitress at the George Inn Board School for Boys & Girls under the guidance of Mistress Clara Tovey. I have found a possible Martha on the 1881 and wondered if someone could please help find Martha on later census returns.
On the 1881 census I located a Martha M. Edmunds at home in Glamorgan as follows:
RG11/5308/109/24 @ High Street, Gelligar.
Thomas Edmunds, Head, 52, occ: Master Tailor & Draper, born. Aberystruth, Monmouth
Martha Edmunds, wife, 52, born Goitre, Monmouth
Mary J Edmunds, daug, 20, seamstress, born Bedwellty, Mon
Anny E Edmunds, daug, 15, domestic servant, born Gelligaer, Glam
Martha M Edmunds, daug, 10, scholar, born Gelligaer, Glam
A report in the school log dated Aug 6, 1886 reads: Martha Edmunds pupil teacher absent all week due to the death of her father.
On FreeBMD I found a possible death for her father: Death Sept 1886, Thomas Edmunds, Merthyr Tydfil.
Can someone please do a look-up on the 1891 for a Martha Edmunds as head of household, widow and with daughter Martha [hopefully with occupation related to teaching]
Regards, Roy

Hello again
Looks good, your help on this is very much appreciated. If you don't know the area then Quakers Yard might look a bit odd but it is a actual place. With JB being a collier, all place names are coal mining communities so it would seem he moved from place to place to obtain work.
Thanks again, Roy

Dear Roy, Are you still interested in Martha Jones nee Edmunds? She was my grandmother. She spent a short time as a pupil teacher, not uncommon in those days, but did not work after her marriage to my grand father J.C.B. Jones. She had 13 children two of whom died in infancy. J.John Jones was my grandfather's eldest son Jacob by his first wife. He was killed in a colliery accident at Nine Mile Point Cwmfelinfach. If you want names, d.o.bs. etc of the children I can let you have them. I remember them all quite well. My great grandfather Thomas Edmunds was a tailor and must have been in a good way of business because as you say she was of independent means. I know she owned 4 or 5 houses in Ynysddu and Bargoed. I don't know why my grand mother, who was her youngest child inherited them all but she did. They have all gone now of course. Why are you interested in us? Are we related? I also know a bit about my grandmother's sisters and their families if you are interested

Hi Thelma
I am so sorry for my tardy reply but I have only just seen your message; normally I get an email telling me I have a reply to the queries posted on Rootschat but for whatever reason not on this occasion. I can only apologise.
I have to say from the start we are not related but I am interested in your grandmother Martha. For the past several years I have been researching everything, anything and everyone with a connection to Brithdir with the aim of writing the village history. From the pages of the school log books I noted that on Dec 19, 1884, Martha Edmunds commenced duties as Monitress at the George Inn Board School for Boys & Girls under the guidance of Mistress Clara Tovey. With that piece of information I set out to try and learn as much as I possibly could about Martha so any details you are willing to share would be gratefully received. If I could be so bold to ask; do you a photograph of Martha that I could have a copy of. I am sure you will appreciate when I say a photograph is worth more than a thousand words and can only enhance her story.
Best Regards
Roy
