Title: irish american connections
Post by: jayg49 on Sunday 31 October 10 09:18 GMT (UK)
complicated story.  Daniel russell sullivan fought in ww1 for british army.  Discharge papers say born in 1878 sandymount, dublin.

he lived here with annie and had two children, the last in 1922.  he stayed until about 1925 and then he says he is going back to the states.  no further information

We don't know anything about his family except that he came from san francisco and quotes his next of kin as mrs k l byrne, berkeley, california.

any help greatly appreciated

1920 Berkeley California

Kathleen L Byrne 60 widow born 1860 Michigan, parents born Ireland
Thomas A Byrne   42
Leslie F Byrne   32
Isabel I Byrne   26
Lillian I Byrne   8

In the 1880 Census Katie Byrne married to Alonzo A. Byrne in San Francisco, California

Maybe she is a cousin or Alonzo her husband is a cousin.  Both were born in the USA with parents born Ireland.

I was just coming to mention Kathleen, who is also in Berkeley in the 1910 & 1930 Census.  She appears to be on the Calif. death index with a death date of 25 Apr. 1942.  Her father's surname was Casey & mother's maiden name was Kenney.

Looks like the same information was already found elsewhere.  http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.sullivan/5877/mb.ashx

In the future, please try to give all the information that you have, so people don't duplicate what's already been looked up.

That helps.  At least we know he was born around February-April.  I'll have a look around.

There is one Daniel Sullivan who is listed on the Social Security death index who was born in the spring of 1878: 4 March 1878.  He passed away in January 1971 and his last residence was East Walpole, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.

Most deaths on the index occurred after the mid-1950's (someone else can more clearly state the facts, since I don't have them).  If Daniel passed away prior to the 1950's, he would not be listed.

I have to leave for a few hours, but I will check back here later.

Do you have his mother's maiden name?  There is a Daniel Sullivan who died San Francisco 30 Aug 1961 with MMN = Dineen.  Birth given as 3 Aug 1878.  This in California Death Records.

I don't see him, yet.

Would you know his occupation, please?  Maybe we can narrow options down (providing he kept the same occupation upon his arrival to North America).

June:  you stated he came from San Francisco...do you know when he arrived?  When did he quote his next of kin, please?

he gave his next of kin on his discharge papers in 1917, he  variously gave his occupation as steel erector or quarryman.
i have no idea when he arrived in the usa from ireland.  i know he came here to fight with the royal engineers in 1917 and his last son was born here  in 1923.  He stayed until his son was about two and a half then said he was going back to the states and would send for them but they heard no more.  his family here would like to know what happened to him

Where is 'here'? Supposed to be born 1878 in Ireland (Sandymount) then to U.S. (San Francisco?), then 'here' before back to U.S.?

I'm not finding Daniel on the 1930 U.S. Census.  I looked for Daniel Sullivan, born within 2 years of 1878, born in Ireland, arriving 1923-1930.  I also checked Daniel's who had initials other than R (in case there could have been an error) and still did not see a likely candidate.  I did not check the actual images for Daniels who appeared to be married and who had Sullivan childen living in the household.

Last night I checked for his immigration, but I don't think it was as thorough as the above census check.  I'll have another look for an immigration record.
------------
I'm sory, I didn't see any likely candidates on the immigration lists.
