I have no idea why they did not marry until 1914. Working on the death notices, this obit, http://www.rootschat.com/links/0a7v/ and BDMs http://www.bdm.dotag.wa.gov.au/_apps/pioneersindex/default.aspx children are:

There are a number of newspaper mentions of the trials and tribulations of this family. ::) I can't see either William or Mary Ann born in WA with those parents, and I guess you need to first work out what William's real name was!

Hi Debra
Thank you for your expertise and time.
Yes it is very challenging and if anyone else would like to assist is more than welcomed.
Taking Prewett/Pruett /Prewitt for children's surnames is a mystery at the moment.
Have witnessed William and Marion Ebb's marriage cert as she was documented and his mother as Susan Minnett and Marion's as Marion OBrien.
Would be great to find out where the parents origins were? England somewhere no doubt.
Also on marriage certificate she was documented as Marion Godfrey but recorded as Mary Ann Godfrey/Godferry.
Wondering whether Minnett was incorrectly documented on Marriage cert and was suppose to be Prewett????
Funnier things have happened!

This might be Mark/William, and perhaps the change of name was because he deserted:
1871 Census
List of the Officers, Men, Boys, Marines, and all other persons onboard Her majesty's Ship Reserve on the night of Sunday, April 2nd, 1871
Mark PREWETT, Ordinary Seaman, 20, born Thornbury, Gloucestershire
He is noted as being on leave and the page is crossed out, clearly because they should not have been recorded if they were not there (some people just can't follow instructions!). I can't see him recorded elsewhere, but will have a look around and see if he is visiting family.
Here are his Navy service documents which you can download, and would be worth checking to see if there is mention of him deserting and perhaps confirm that this is the right person. http://www.rootschat.com/links/0a8h/

Just trying to work out the relationship between James and Hester PREWETT and Mark's father Joseph. I came across this site with some info on the family. http://stjohnstreet.thornburyroots.co.uk/prewetts%20james%20and%20hester.htm
Also some Thornbury Parish registers here http://www.scribes-alcove.co.uk/
Joseph's second marriage to Emma Pavey WOOD is detailed on familyseach:
Groom's Name Joseph PREWETT
Groom's Birth Date 1817
Groom's Birthplace
Groom's Age 42
Bride's Name Emma Pavey WOOD
Bride's Birth Date 1827
Bride's Birthplace
Bride's Age 32
Marriage Date 15 Sep 1859
Marriage Place St.James, Bristol, Glouc., England
Groom's Father's Name Thomas Prewett
Groom's Mother's Name
Bride's Father's Name Thomas Wood
Joseph's birthplace in census records should be "Olveston", not "Alveston". His baptism:
Name Joseph PREWETT
Gender Male
Baptism/Christening Date 14 Nov 1813
Baptism/Christening Place Olveston, Gloucester, England
Father's Name Thomas PREWETT
Mother's Name Hannah
Good grief there are a lot of PREWETTs in Thornbury and Olveston!!!

After 1896 WA birth certificates should have the parents' birthplaces. Do you have any certificates for the later children born to William/Mark and Mary Ann? If not, this needs to be your next step to try and find a birthplace for Mary Ann.
Debra :)
-
Dear Debra
You have been a great great big help. Many thanks.
Mary Ann Godfrey I think was born 1860 Perth WA. Have to look this up.
Have to see where Prewett and Ebbs link? Or have I missed something??

Hi velcro,
I cannot find any link to the EBBS name, so I don't know why he would have chosen it if he definitely was this Mark PREWETT. Perhaps as you gather more information on him, something might come to light. It is an unusual name to choose, why not just John Smith?
Do you think Mary Ann was telling the truth about her parents? I see someone has a tree with her parents as Thomas GODFREY and Catherine HOLMES, siblings Priscilla, Joseph and Catherine. Just a co-incidence with the names perhaps?
Debra :)
-
Dear Debra
This later info you talk of was sent to me awhile back so I'm quite confused with all this new info brought to light. If wasn't for William and Marion's Marriage cert info then would have been on the wrong track!
Catherine Holmes's family must be another lot either related or not???
Time will tell.:-)

Hi
Have found that William Mark Prewett entered the British Navy at age 14 as a volunteer and his sister Charlotte Edwards signed for him. Parents probably deceased 5 Dec 1866 for 10 years Commitment of engagement 1 May 1870.
Trying to find the name of this ship. Where would I look?
Now he married after all his children born in Fremantle 1914 but his first child born Joseph Ebb Godfrey
1884 Jarrahdale WA
Would like help to find when he arrived in WA please.
Family talk he "jumped ship".
Another twist is that he and family took the name Ebbs not Prewett as surnames and cant find where Ebbs come from? Any help here?
Cheers

Hi Velcro,
I have found Mark in 1871 (when he was listed onboard ship, but on leave). He is with Charlotte and her husband William Edward EDWARDS who married in 1862. They are at Carisbrook on the Isle of Wight. William was a prison convict guard in 1871 and also in 1881 at but now living at Portsea, Portsmouth, Hampshire. By 1891 they were still at Portsea, but William was a tobacconist. He was about 20 years older than Charlotte. In 1871, Mark is listed as a visitor, 19, seaman.
I assume that you got your information from the service record that I mentioned. Does it give a list of his service, and if so, what is the last entry and the date? Does it say anything about a discharge? He could have served on many different ships during his service.
Deserters were listed in Police Gazettes - WA's are online, but only start in 1876. I found one mention of a William EBBS on page 193 in 1881 being apprehended at Fremantle for being drunk and disorderly. Nothing for PREWETT (or as many variations that I can think of). You can search for yourself here http://www.slwa.wa.gov.au/resources/police_gazettes Of course you don't know that he deserted in WA, and Gerry's find could mean he was in SA.
We have a few resources for deserters at my family history society, and I will get there in the next few days (hopefully today) and have a look for you.
Just as an aside, I find it quite interesting that Mark/William knew his mother's name - it is an unusual name but he was aware of it. He was only six years old when she died and his father re-married almost straight away - it would have been easy for him to have been led to believe that the second wife was his mother. His relationship with his sister Charlotte (who was eight years older than him) makes me wonder if all was not rosy in the family when the father re-married. The note "parents probably deceased" perhaps means that they had no contact with their father.

Western Australia Police Gazette August 4th 1880

This indicates that William was still on ships in 1880 ( if he is your William Ebbs)

On the front page is William Ebbs sentence.

Hi
Thanks very much for your expertise. So much info to fill the gaps. Hopefully Mark Prewett is William Ebbs. Maybe changed his name once he deserted from the Navy.
The Police records were very interesting and didnt know they were on line.
The time frames seem to fit his activities.
Hopefully will find out why he used Ebbs but may not? Wondering whether his step mother's mother's maiden name may of been Ebbbs?
Now to find his siblings records and his father's death records.
Maybe his mother Susan Minnett's mother's maiden name was Ebbs>
Couldnt find her parents listed. Any help with this please?
Cheers

This seems to be another son with birthdate about 1903.
Has he been mentioned before?

I knew there was a William from the death notice, but couldn't find him. I think this might be him with a mistranscription:
1905
HOBBS, William
Parents: William & Mary Ann GODFREY (FREMANTLE)
I had a look at the deserter's records, but no joy there sorry. I checked "Ships' deserters, 1852-1900 including stragglers, strays and absentees from H.M. ships" (Jim Melton), and the South Australia Deserters' Register.
Looking at the children's births, William/Mark added the "Ebbs" to his name when Joseph was born in 1884, but used the PREWETT surname and continued to do so right up until the birth of William in 1905. Perhaps he just didn't like the name "Mark" and wasn't actually hiding from anyone, and something happened between 1897 and 1905 to change the surname to EBBS?

Hi Velcro,
There is a death registered in 1850 for a Mark PREWETT at Thornbury, and you would have to get this death cert and Henry's to find a cause of death. UK BDMs from Sep 1837 onward are here http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl
If you go to the top of this page and click on "Search" you can put the names from other threads in there and find all past postings. This is one of them http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,447087.0.html

Hi Velcro,
No children are listed on census entries for Charlotte and William EDWARDS up to 1901.
Walter may have died in 1853 http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl I can't see him on census entries after 1851 which I gave you in an earlier post.
Having a bit of trouble identifying George, but in 1901 there is a George PREWETT who is a pauper inmate at the Thornbury workhouse, aged 66 (born c1835), single, born at Thornbury.
The only contender that I can see for Charles is this one:
1871
Cardiff, Wales
Charles R. PREWETT, 31, Grocer and Cab Proprietor, born Thornbury, Gloucestershire
Sarah, wife, 28, born Appledore, Devon
It might be their marriage in 1864 at Cardiff (her maiden surname Sarah ROSS)
I can't see them after 1871, so possibly Charles' death later in 1871:
Deaths
Dec 1871
PREWETT Charles
33
Cardiff
11a 173
A pretty unlucky family all around really, and might explain why Mark/William and Charlotte maintained a close relationship.

Hi
Question? Obviously Marriage certificate is the answer but ask any way.
Marriage cert states parents of Mary Ann Godfrey to be Joseph Godfrey and Marion Obrien (both sound of Irish descent does anyone else agree?)
but IGI records states
Thomas GODFREY (AFN:1Z7B-XZX) Pedigree
Born: Abt. 1829 Place:
Married: 6 Dec 1854 Place: Rc, Perth, W.a., Ausl
Father:
Mother:
Wife's Name
Catherine HOLMES (AFN:1Z7B-Z04) Pedigree
Born: 1833 Place:
Married: 6 Dec 1854 Place: Rc, Perth, W.a., Ausl
But both couples have same children.
Which is correct?
If marriage cert is correct then corrections to be made for IGI.
Cheers

Hi Velcro,
The information you are quoting from "familysearch" appears to me to be nothing more than the composition of another researcher.
The details are based on the same information and records which are available online to anyone, that is WA bdm online.
Unfortunately, there are many trees out there published with great confidence, but unsubstantiated information. This tree may or may not be accurate. Certificates may or may not have been sighted.
We have not been able in this search to establish why the parental details on the marriage cert. for MARY ANN are at variance with later information.
Sue
-
Hi Velcro,
Sorry you have lost me here - "but both couples have same children, which is correct?" - who are the two couples?
Thomas GODFREY and Catherine HOLMES married and had children in WA, but I am unaware of any other children (other than Mary Ann who says they are her parents) to Joseph GODFREY and Marion/Mary Ann O'BRIEN. There is no proof that I can see that your Mary Ann is the daughter of Thomas and Catherine.
As far as I can see, the submitted entry on the IGI lists Thomas and Catherine's children, one of whom is a Mary Ann born WA in 1859, and this can be confirmed on the WA BDMs. It does not have any marriage details for her, and does not identify her as being your Mary Ann.
There are contact details for the IGI submitted info, so perhaps you should try contacting them to see if they have any further info. There are trees on Ancestry which do say that your Mary Ann was the daughter of Thomas and Catherine, so should also contact them to see if they have any supporting documentation. Even this person's tree, "RJMORR~1", names Thomas and Catherine as parents but has posted a copy of the marriage certificate which obviously has conflicting information - no explanation for this is given.
Debra :)

Hi Velcro,
I cannot see any records at all for a Joseph GODFREY and Marion/Mary Ann O'BRIEN in WA. Your Mary Ann may have immigrated to Australia - did you say earlier that you have a document that says she was born in WA?
