Hi,
I'm looking for information regarding my 2xgreat aunt, Nellie Engel. She was born Nellie King in Brighton, East Sussex, England in 1872. She moved to Kent with two of her sisters on the death of her mother, Eliza, in 1890 then to London where she met and married Robert Wilhelm Engel in 1896.
Robert emigrated to New York in 1915 and Nellie followed in 1916 with their children: Dorothea, Mae, Violet, Robert, Gladys and Daisy.
I have found information regarding their emigration to New York and in the 1920 and 1930 U.S. Federal census. I have aslo been able to track down Nellie's death certificate; she died in 1930 and was buried at the Woodlawn Cemetery, NY.
Best wishes,
LJD

Hi LJD
You seem to have ascertained quite a lot about Nellie's life. What further information are you hoping to find?

Hi Lisa!
Thank you for all this amazing detailed information and for going to the trouble to reply to my post.
These are definitely Nellie's daughters. To think that Nellie started life in Victorian Brighton where her older sisters worked in domestic service and that her daughters ended up as naturalized Americans! I'm really pleased to have this information!
Many thanks from Devon, England!
Best wishes,
Louise

If you can get exact dates of birth for any of the other children, it may help. On the Social Security Death Index (free on www.rootsweb.com), you can search by first name & birth date, in case the daughters are listed under married names. (The SSDI covers mainly births from 1964 forward, so this is assuming that your people survived that long.) I tried checking for Gladys with the birth date that Lisa found, but unfortunately there are 22 women that fit. 4 of them seem to have some New York connections, so those might be more likely candidates.

I just found Dorothea's petition for citizenship, which lists her as born 8 Apr. 1897 in London, England. I also found Violet's petition, which says she was born 4 Mar. 1900 in London, England.
Not finding much for Dorothea, but the SSDI has a Violet August with that birth date who died in Mar. 1980. Her last address was in Bronx, NY 10457 and her last benefit went to New York, NY 10016. Her Social Security number was issued in New York. There are 3 other Violets on there with that birth date, but this one seems like the most similar to the information we have.

There is a death notice in the New York Times from 17 Mar. 1980 for a Violet August. Unfortunately, all it says is that she died suddenly at home & was survived by her two sisters. Funeral services were scheduled at Walter B. Cooke Funeral Home, 1 W. 190th St., Bronx, NY at 11 AM on Tuesday.
Hopefully, we'll be able to find something to rule in or out this woman as your Violet.
Also, in case it helps, I found an article in the Times mentioning Robert W. Engel's will being probated in the Bronx and it appears the estate ($2000 of real property and $200 personal property) was going to daughters Violet, Gladys, and Dorothea Engel of 271 E. 238th St., the executrices. The article is dated 28 Feb. 1934. I also found Robert's death notice, which says he died 5 Feb. 1934.

Thank you for spending so much time and effort posting this information. Unfortunately Violet's middle name is Maxwell so I think this is the wrong Violet. Dorothea fits in though and thank you for the detailed information about Robert. I have a lot to work on here.
I think the family, Robert being German, probably had a hard time in London when WW1 broke out due to the anti German sentiment at the time. I wonder if this was why they went to America?
I will follow up the recommendations you have suggested and look up the Social Security Death Index for details of the sisters and Robert John Carl Engel, their brother.
Am amazed at the time and effort people have put in to replying to my post. Many thanks; it is very much appreciated.

You're welcome. :)
The SSDI didn't list a middle initial either way for Violet August, so I wouldn't rule that entry out based on that. The latest info we seem to have for your Violet was when she was in her late 20's, so it's not out of the realm of possibility that she may have married after that.
