I believe I have found my grandmothers family in the 1901 census but she is not one it and she would have been 3
she was born in 1898 in flixton
her father is James Brown, mother Francis (Frances), siblings arthur, ada and amy. Ages all work out to be correct.
I am puzzled as to where she would have been at such a young age. can anyone find her on any other census/years. I know they moved at some stage to New Zealand.
-
Hi so that I and others can help, could I ask what her name is?

thanks
-
Hi Smitham, in your 1st post you say that the siblings are not only the correct names, but also the correct ages to be Alice's sisters and brother, would I be correct, also the only birth I could find for c1898 was an Alice May Brown June 1898 Chorlton 8c 778, then on the 1901 is an Alice May Brown aged 3 born Manchester visiting the Bittulph family at the Red Lion in Tittesworth Staffordshire?
I cannot quite work out why, but need to know if my first point is correct!

Oh excellant so is it Hannah who is her aunty?

My mum has informed me that Alice May's Dad did re marry to a Sarah. Also Alice was often called May
Do you have any idea what Sarah's maiden name was. There are loads of James Brown and Sarah ? marriages after 1901.
-
Oh excellant so is it Hannah who is her aunty?
If you look at the marriage of James H Biddulph posted by RonOne you will see that Harriett Brown is the sister of your James Brown!

Hi with a certain amount of insight it was:-
James Brown to Sarah Pilkington March 1906 Barton I. 8a 869
Keyboard86
-
Barton I. = Barton upon Irwell
The Barton upon Irwell registration district covers Flixton. (see first post)
-
You guys are wonderful. It is Pilkington, Sarah.
Yes thanks I had realised after i put the message about the Aunty.
Great help
thanks

Probable death registration for Frances.

-
I am told Ada died 29.12 1904 and frances some time around that
-
I am told Ada died 29.12 1904
Which will be:
Deaths Dec quarter 1904
BROWN Ada Mary - Aged 9 - Barton I. - Vol 8c - Page 448
-
As you appear to be quite new to this, you should be aware that all of the above are only probabilities and need to be confirmed with Birth Marriage and Death certificates.
For information contained on England and Wales BMD certificates have a look at this site:
http://home.clara.net/dixons/Certificates/indexbd.htm
As you already know your grandmother's parents names are James Brown and Frances Coppock, your best starting place would be your grandmother's birth certificate which you can order online from the General Register Office (GRO)
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp
using the following information:
Births Jun (Quarter) 1898
BROWN Alice May
District: Chorlton
Vol: 8c
Page: 778
Before ordering it's always a good idea to check the reference on FreeBMD and also the scan of the page as transcription errors can sometime occur.
Then the next step would be to order the marriage certificate of Alice May's parents - James Brown and Frances Coppock. Which should give you their respective father's names and occupations.
If you need any more help with this, please feel free to ask.
