Hello Everyone,
I am trying to locate my Grandfather on passenger lists with no joy.
His name in the UK was Robert Franklin Jones, however I have reason to believe that before he arrived it was Robert Franklin Wainwright.
Records suggest he was born at some point in or around 1876, and he appears first on the 1901 Census, so I assume he travelled in the 1890's as he was apparently alone.
I have searched passenger lists on Ancestry with no luck, and was hoping someone could give me some advice on how to proceed, and whether or not ships travelled direct to Britain at all back then, or stopped off somewhere else first, hence his departing from would be different maybe?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Lucas

I can't help with specific information but I do know that as late as the 1960s some transatlantic ships would depart New York and stop at Bermuda before arriving in Southampton or Liverpool. Perhaps the passengers picked up in Bermuda were listed as embarking New York?

Thank you
i'll amend my searching just incase

Hi, changing surname from Wainwright to Jones suggests he wanted to disappear from public view.
It raises the question of which name he used as a passenger enroute.

Yeah but his age and description would be roughly the same

There are many reasons why people change their names so it's best not to assume too much. Perhaps Robert's father was named wainright but he was raised by a stepfather or someone named Jones and decided to use his father's name when he moved, etc.

It's certainly possible,
It just seems like it's going to be certainly impossible to find out when he came to the UK or his family before based on whats available,
Shame really
