Title: Marriage look-up - chipping norton - NOW COMPLETED
Post by: conqueror_2 on Monday 25 October 10 19:41 BST (UK)
I am new to this and would appreciate some assistance please:

my g.g.grandfather Emmanuel Hooper married Sarah Ann Artess in1865 at Chipping Norton. He died in 1899, She remarried in 1901 (A/M/J Chipping Norton 3a/1885). I am trying to identify the man she married but have been unable to do so. Can someone look up the local records please. Any information greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome to RootsChat

If you just put the reference you have given (A/M/J 1901 Chipping Norton 3a/1885) into a search, without any name, it will show you the names of the people covered by this reference.  In this case

Sarah Ann Hooper
Mary Tebby
James Aries
William Shelley

(you're lucky - sometimes you get an odd number of names if something has been mis-transcribed!)

So Sarah married either James Aries or William Shelley

From earlier censuses you can get Sarah's year and place of birth, so try and find her as either Aries or Shelley in the 1911 census, or a death registration after her marriage in 1901.

If this doesn't work look for Mary Aries/Shelley, so that you can eliminate one of the men

Unfortunately, for copyright reasons, we are not allowed to do 1911 searches on RootsChat.

Hope this helps   :D

hello linda

very many thanks for the information I have I think managed to narrow it down to William Shelley. Out of interest in your message you suggest putting the reference in the search, can you please explain what search programme that would be please. Will this work for any situation where one has only one side of the marriage.?

Thanks for the help and guidance, and the welcome to rootschat.

chris.

Hi Chris

The reference you gave was

A/M/J 1901 Chipping Norton 3a/1885

which is the index entry for the marriage registration

A/M/J 1901 means Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1901 (sometimes referred to as the June quarter)
Chipping Norton is the registration district
3a is the Volume
1885 is the Page

If you go onto (free search site)

www.freebmd.org.uk

and click on Search

Select
Type - Marriages
Date range - Jun 1901 to Jun 1901
Volume/Page -  3a / 1885
Districts - Chipping Norton

then click on Find

you should get the names I gave you (If it says there are too many results to display you've probably forgotten to specify something in the search!)

If you look here

www.freebmd.org.uk/marriage-help.html

it gives you some help on finding the other 'half' of a marriage

Come back if you need more help   :D

Hello Phil

many thanks for the message, any information you can give me re my enquiry would be most helpful. From the information that Linda gave me I think I have been able to shortlist the spouse to either William Shelley or James Aries.

Very many thanks for the offer.

Hi Chris

Ive done my best but the MAR between Emmanuel Hooper & Sarah Ann Artess didnt take place in Chipping Norton parish (it must have been in another part of the district) - I favour Chadlington for this MAR as thats where they were in 1871 (according to my census fiche index) by the way Sarahs age is wrong as she was baptised at Chiiping Norton as below
1 MAY 1853 sarah Ann d/o William/Lucy ARTISS (mailcart driver)
sponsors - Widow Tinson : Tinson & his Wife
There is no sign of a BUR at Chippy for Emmanuel Hooper.

I forgot to say that Sarah Ann's second MAR wasnt at Chippy either, who knows she may have married a family fried at Chadlington (presuming that this is where she & Emmanuel settled) its worth checking this parish out & should you wish to purchase them the registers are on fiche at £5.90 from Oxford FHS - they also do a very good search service but if its the right parish then purchasing the fiche transcript from them could prove a lot more fruitfull as they probably had children & I bet this was the Emmanuels home parish - so you could get a lot more details for his family.

Sorry this is the best I could do

All the very best

Phil

Emmanual Hooper born 1844? in Turkdean was my g,g,grandfather.
I have a certified copy of the marriage certificate between Emmanuel and Sarah Ann Artess dated 16 Oct. 1865 signed by him with his mark and signed by her.  Their address was Enstone and his occupation, groom.  In the 1871 census he is a shepherd in Chadlington - in 1881 a groom in Great Tew - in1891 he is listed as foreman at Glyme Farm in Chipping Norton.  However by 1901 he had passed away (1899) and Sarah Ann is living at 50 Rock Hill, Chipping Norton with her eighth child Edith Ethel. She married William Shelley that year in Chipping Norton.
My grandfather Edwin Thomas was their seventh child born in 1881. He along with older brother Albert moved to Slough by the 1901 census.
