I am struggling to trace parentage of a Jacob Dixon Allen born circa 1818. He shows in 1851 census stating place of Birth Jarrow, in 1861 census he states place of birth South Shields. He does not show up on IGI, although I think Jarrow is not on IGI.
He was inirtially married to a Jane (Greaves or Wood) in 1837.
He shows in 1841 census as a 23 year old with wife Jane and children Henry and John.
He has a distinctive name, I have tried searching for an Allen marrying a Dixon to bo avail.
I have looked at Bishops Transcripts for Jarrow for years 1817/1818 to no avail.
Any ideas?
My other experience of thsi family name was that it was interchangeable Allan/Allen

The are a few trees on An.....y have his first wife as Jane Wood, she died in 1855 and he then married Elizabeth Dobson in 1856. His last marriage is to Margaret Ann Hutchinson in 1867.
The trees have his parents as John Allen & Margaret Hedley.

The library service access to A...y does not give access to the trees, can anyone tell me the date of birth for Jacob Dixon Allen born Jarrow, based on census informatioon this is likely to be 1817/8. I have found the marriage for his parents 7th March 1816 St Pauls, Jarrow. I have found two possible siblings for him Margaret and Joannah

No Jacob's baptised in Jarrow

I have followed through on the probable parents of John Allen and Margaret Hedley and found their marriage at St Pauls, Jarrow, Durham, England in 1816. Also two possible siblings baptised Jarrow 1828/1830 to a John and Margaret, but no sign of Jacob Dixon Allen, I believe in the 1818 date as his first marriage is 1837.

I am just telling you that there is a person by the name Jacob Dixon Allen baptised in South Shields. I have no idea if he is one minute old or a hundred years. However a distinctive name and may be connected to the family you are looking at.

Dave you are researching the same person as me, Jacob Dixon Allen is my 4th Great Grandfather. I'd be interested to hear how your connected to the family.
I am a descendant of his son, John Wood Allen.

I think Jacob Dixon Allen is the son of John Allen and Mary Pickering who were married 17Nov 1797.

Out of interest why John and Mary Pickering rather than the John and Margaret Hedley option , what makes it more likely as there is no baptism fot Jacob. Although it is quite possible that the 1830 baptism may have been him just getting baptised late.
I have also just spotted a new entry on FamilySearch, I knwo marriage certificates say his father was John

The first clue was on the marriage certficate of Jacob Dixon Allen and Jane Wood in 1837. The marriage was witnessed by Heugh Percy Allen and Alice Allen (nee Robson they married 13/7/1836).
I started to research Heugh Percy Allen and located him in the 1851 and 1861 census. Then located his baptism where his parents were John and Mary Allen. I believe Heugh Percy Allen is an older brother of Jacob Dixon Allen.
Then on family search I located more children of John and Mary baptised:
Jane Allen 1800
John Allen Allen 1802
William Aljernon Allen 1805
Charles Adolphus Allen 1808
Henry Augustus Allen 1810
Mary Ann Allen 1817(twin of Heugh)
Heugh Percy Allen 1817 (lists father John as being from Warkworth Northumberland)
Jacob Dixon Allen 1818
The second clue is that Jacob Dixon Allen and Jane Woods first son is Henry Augustus Allen, the same name as his brother. They continue to use Jacobs the siblings names again for thbeir children.
