(a trail  :))

Camperdown Chronicle 1st July 1919 p2.

The death of Mr. Frank Grayson. caretaker of the Warrnambool Race course, took place on Wednesday evening last. The deceased was taken seriously ill on Saturday afternoon, 21st, and died in the Warrnambool Hospital. He was born at Lurgan. County Armagh, Ireland, and came to Australia, arriving in Queensland with his brother, the late Robert Grayson, at an early age. He settled in the Warrnambool district about 42 years ago, and was employed by the late Mrs. T. M'Kellar, of Tower Hill, for about 12 years. He then secured the appointment as caretaker of the local racecourse, a position which he occupied for about 30 years, and during that period had proved a very efficient officer. Local and visiting horse owners and trainers, as well as others connected with racing, held him in the highest esteem. The funeral took place at the Warrnam- bool Cemetery on Friday afternoon, and was largely attended.

I have a Mary Jane GRACEY (married name NEWS) b abt 1805 Co Armagh who died 1880, Moggill, Queensland. Her father's name was given as William GRAYSON. (It appears that the names are interchangeable)

I know that there a some GRACEY researchers, so it's something to keep in mind if you want to trace your GRAYSON's back to Armagh.

All the best,
Gail

Thank you to all of you who have replied, this has given me a lot to work on.  As you say the name was changed during registering a birth, with result my grandfather was registered as Gracey, but his brothers changed their surname back to Grayson when they emigrated to Montgomery New York. As far as I knew my grandfather was the only one who remained in Boconnell Lurgan Co Armagh.  The land on which they lived was taken over by the new city of Craigavon.

I think that someone in Australie may have written a book called The Allens and the Grayson's, but that is all I know.

I have also noted that they all used the same christian names.

Many thanks for all your assistance.

Elizabeth,

You are correct there is a book and there is a copy for reference only held at the Queensland State Library here in Brisbane.

I was in the Library today and sought the book out, it's nearly 400 pages hard bound and a wealth of family history.

I you like I could take some notes of relevant information you are looking for when I go to the Libray next.

Hi Gerry,

Thankyou for looking up the book for me, I would be interested in any information that is recorded in the book, regarding the early Grayson's in Lurgan Co Armagh.

Many thanks for all your trouble.

Elizabeth,

I have now made notes from the book and hopefully there is information that will assist but I'm not sure how to write it up.

If you let me know in a bit more detail on what you need I'll address these from my notes.

I hope I haven't given you too much bother.

If my research is correct, I have three brothers, John Grayson born 1786 in Co Tyrone and moved to Boconnell, His children emigrated to Australia.
Thomas born 1794 in Boconnell.  He remained in Boconnell, four of his sons emigrated to New York, but my Grandfather Thomas, remained in Boconnell.

Francis Born 1798 in Boconnell his family also emigrated to Australia.

Does the book mention the first Grayson's in either Co Tyrone or Boconnell Lurgan.

I do not know who the father of John, Thomas or Francis was.
Thank you again for your  assistance with my research into the Graysons.

Gail,

There is a lot of history on the Grayson families in Australia and I can look at it again next time I'm in the State Library if there is anything you need more info on. I can double check the earlier info as well.

Thank you for your kind offer, Gerry, but the William GRAYSON and Mary  Ann GRACEY I mentioned is all that I know about them.

Mary Ann m. Edward NEWS 1831 Co Armagh and died in Moggil, Brisbane, 1880 so I don't know any connection to the Australian GRACEY/GRAYSON line ... as yet. But I live in hope!

Kindest regards,
Gail

Thank you for confirming this information.  Can you tell me if there are any photographs in the book?

It also looks like the information that Gail has is also my Grayson's from Boconnell.  Gail are you related to them?

Does the book tell you why or what they did when they arrived in Australia?

Is this book published or just a one of given to the library for reference

Also Gerry do you have Irish connections that I might be able to help you with.

Regards

elizabeth

Elizabeth,

I'll find out more about the book and send you the publishing details, it's around 400 pages with a lot of history about the Australian connections with photographs.

There is a copy at the Queensland State Library Heritage Collection and there is also a copy at the Genealogical Society of which I am a member.

I can't recollect any old photographs from Ireland but there are some old maps.

That sounds of it is the same Grayson as I am researching.

Francis Grayson/Gracey was my great grandfather and his son Thomas was my grandfather.  David, Francis and James and Jack (John) all emigrated to USA in the early 1900's.  I would love to know more about Jane and if you have any photographs/

Also THOMAS GRAYSON, father of the above - named David Grayson, who died 18th June 1879, aged 85 years

Over to you to sort all those out!
Would the Francis at the bottom be father of David, Francis, James and Thomas?

And is this the same family? Dates of birth match for the sons.

All from Seagoe Cemetery

With regard your first gravestone

This is my great great grandmother and father Thomas and Jane (nee Hamilton)

Francis was my great grandfather his first wife Margaret (Murphy) died, he had tow daughters Sarah Ann and Margaret who both died young.  He then married again to Catherine (McCann) who was the mother of David, Francis, James and Jack and Thomas.

David was the son of Thomas and he died  in 1879.

with regards to the second grave  Francis was the brother of Thomas my great great grandfather, he married Rachel Turkington, most of their family seems to have gone to Australia.

with regard the older Francis Grayson which is illegible I have mention of a francis in the Brownlow rental for 1755, ther is also a Robert.

Do you think that Jane maybe a siste of John Thomas and Francis.

Each family seems to have used the same names, which makes it difficult to work out.

Hi Elizabeth
I thought she might be sister of Francis m Catherine McCann but going on the census  http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Armagh/Brownlows/Boconnell/1026933/
he would be born 1824 - is that the right person?

David
