Hello, I am wondering if anyone know where I may find the records for the above church. I have discovered someone on a census who was said to have been born there in c1840. Unfortunately, I can't find a trace of him prior to 1871 so thought I would pursue possible baptism records.
His name is Thomas Clark West and is listed on the 1871 census with his wife Maria and some very oddly named children!
Any guidance would be appreciated. Thank you. R :)

Dear Royd
Have just checked out the Nuneham Courtenay PRs from the Abingdon Registration District Vol 2., courtesy of our friends at the Oxfordshire Family History Society - but the records only go up to 1836 for baptisms, and there are no Wests born in the 1800s.
Perhaps someone else can advise where to look for later records?

Possibility he added the West?
There is a marriage Jun Q 1861 Thomas Clarke West/Maria Poole Abingdon 2c 471.
Looking on the 1861 census RG9 975 fo 56 p12 there is a Maria Poole, serv, 21, Dagenham. On the line above Thomas Clarke, lodger, 22, Baldon Oxon.
There is a Marsh Baldon & Toot Baldon under Abingdon district as is Nuneham Courtenay. Also a brth Thomas Clarke Dec Q 1840 Abingdon 6 128.

Hi Royd,
Following on from Allisont's clue, I have found this entry in the Toot Baldon PRs (ex OFHS);
Marriage;
22-5-1861 WEST, Thomas Clarke, fa, bach, Policeman, Tottenham son of Thomas Clarke, Labr to
POOLE, Maria, fa, sp, Toot Baldon, dau of William, Labr, by Banns
wits; William Gooding, Emma Clarke.
There is no entry for Maria Poole's baptism in Toot Baldon PRs
Hope this may be of some assistance.
Now just to add, in the Marsh Baldon PRs (ex OFHS) I have just found this baptism;
10-2-1839 WEST, Thomas Clarke, son of Martha, Single woman, Nuneham Courtenay.
This may confuse the issue.

I don't suppose there is a Thomas Clarke/Martha West marriage is there?

Hi,
I can't find a Thomas Clarke/Martha West marriage in either Nuneham, Toot Baldon or Marsh Baldon PRs.
but I have found this entry in the Nuneham Courtenay PRs;
Baptism;

in the Toot Baldon PRs I have found the following which may be of interest;
Marriage;

Martha CLARKE, 58, wid, Golden Balls, dau of William, Labr
by Banns

Good heaven's :o
Thank you so much for all the input on this. I have had to read it a couple of times to make sure I got it right. So, my Thomas is the son of Thomas Clarke and Martha West then is that right, but he kept the West name?
The thing is, that I am not even sure that this family are part of my Wests at all. I had some contact through Genes a few years ago from a chap in Australia who said that that this Thomas and his descendents, were related to my Wests. As my Wests are all from the High Wycombe area and I have them mostly sorted and documented, I was not convinced. Then he sent me a photo of one of Thomas's descendents, and the likeness to my late father is amazing.
I will have to track Martha back now methinks!
I am so grateful for your local knowledge - I had never heard of these places till I started investigating this problem, even though I lived in Oxford for a year! ::)
Thank you again. R.

Hi,
Having got (I think :-\) Thomas Clarke West sorted, I am wondering if it is possible to have some help in finding the marriage of his grandparents William and Mary West who are mentioned above?
As a re-cap: His mother was Martha West who was baptised 1819 - daughter of William and Mary West.
If William and Mary's marriage could be found it would, hopefully, take me nearer my quest.
Many thanks. R.

Hi Royd - Did you ever get a reply on this? Thomas Clarke West is a distant twig on my tree, so I have some details on him and family. His mother Martha was the 8th child of 11, of William West and Mary Simson. William and Mary were married on 15 Jul 1804 in Oxford.
William was the son of James West and Hannah Clarke. bap 10 Apr 1785 in Nuneham. James and Hannah were married on 6 Apr 1779 in Nuneham, witnesses John Pittsen and Sarah Shakespear.
I cannot find any baptism for James. At the same time (1770's) William and Elizabeth West were also having children in Nuneham, and a lot of the names match. It's possible William was a brother of James. Again I can find no trace of a baptism in the area for William.
James died in Nuneham and was buried 21 May 1822, aged 71, giving an approx dob of 1751. Let me know if you want any more details of siblings/wives.

Hi Linda - that was a lovely surprise as it's been so long since I posted this query. :D
Yes please, if you have any more information I would be delighted to see it. Firstly though, I must get to know this chap again as he has been on a back burner for quite a while.
I'm extremely grateful. :)
Regards,
R.

Hi again - Thanks for the reply. I'll sort more out over the weekend and get back to you soon.

Not sure if this is of any help but I have a Jubilee George West Born 1810 in Nuneham Courtney who married Hannah Henwood around 1829. Sorry not much I know, but they are but a twig on my Henwood tree.
Keith.
-
Jubilee George West was also a child of William and Mary, and a brother of Marthas.
Between Dec 1809 and Dec 1810, George III's Golden Jubilee, all the children born in Nuneham were named either Jubilee George (6 of them) or Jubilee Charlotte (4). I've not come across any other town where this happened. (4 of the Georges and one of the Charlottes are in my tree!)
Presumably you have Jubilee George Henwood then - he married a distant twig of mine Fanny Pound.
Linda

Jubilee Henwood is my 3rd GG. As of intrest I came across this in regards to the names Jubilee Geroge & Jubilee Charlotte. 'Through the influence of the 3rd Earl Harcourtt ,all village children born christmas 1809 to christmas 1810 to have "Jubilee' as first name (George 3rds golden) and then George for boys and Charlotte for girls, after the Queen'
Keith.

Ooh Keith we're related - Fanny Pound Henwoods Grandfather (who would I think be your 5xG Grandfather), Thomas Attewell is my 5xG Grandfather! Which of their children are you descended from?

Hi Linda,
I've been refreshing my memory about this chap and it's all beginning to come back to me. Isn't it typical that I would now love to stay and sort this out but have to go shopping with daughter this afternoon....sigh. Not to worry, I'll be back later.
My interest in this family is rather odd to be honest.
I have a large tree of Wests - mostly from the West Wycombe area. About 6 or 7 years ago, someone contacted me stating that they were related. I was fairly green back then and took it at face value. They sent me a photograph of one of their relations and he was the absolute image of my late father. I was intrigued but forgot about it.
A couple of years later when, having learned a lot more, I was verifying all people in my tree and something didn't ring true. I simply could not tie this chap in anywhere - so I took up the chase for a while and then moved onto other things.
Looks as though I am now back on the chase - and great fun it is too. I would simply love to prove that there is a link because the likeness is too striking to ignore.
Many thanks and I look forward to seeing what you come up with. :) R.

Thank you Linda - no mention of Wycombe anywhere is there ? :-\

Very grateful for your input. R. ;D

It's been a while since I posted a picture on this site and am having problems :(
When I click on the add attachments bit, the usual add format doesn't appear :o
Any advice please? R.
Edit: I've just tried on another thread with no problems. Could it be because this is in the lookups section? I will put them in the usual bit. :D

I am also a descendent of Jubilee George HENWOOD (married to Fanny POUND) of Nuneham Courtney. His son, Willoughby Bertie HENWOOD was my g. grandfather, and his daughter, Caroline HENWOOD, was my grandmother. I know Fanny died shortly after Willoughby was born, but I when Willoughby is 9, and his sister Mathilda is 13, they are listed as being in Headington Workhouse - but Jubilee George is not. Does anyone know what happened to this family and why they were split up when they had older brothers and sisters? Look forward to hearing from anyone who can help. Many thanks
