Title: Wally HANCOCK
Post by: Bobshop on Friday 22 October 10 20:01 BST (UK)
I am trying to locate any possible family members of Wally Hancock, who was originally from liverpool, and emigrated to australia possibly in the 1940/1950s. Wally was the brother of my late father bertram hancock, who died in 1985, both brothers were in the Royal Navy together, wally was a welterweight boxer in the navy, and later became a champion boxer in Australia. :)

Many news items for a fighter Wally HANCOCK but before 1940.  Perhaps it was a different man.

Could we have Wally's parents' names please.

The National Archives of Australia has a Service Record for Walter Hancock born in 1906 in Liverpool, he first joined the navy in 1925 and his nok is his wife Amy Hancock.

This would be  the same man as detailed by Cando

Thank you everyone who replied to my post concerning Wally Hancock, I never expected so much information so quickly.  From what little I know about Wally,Cando has hit the nail on the head and Jen seems to be talking about the same person.  Now I would be grateful of any advice as to find out if Wally and Amy had any children, this is the first time I have visited a site like roots, so am very much a novice as what to do next. I have a photo of Wally in his boxing gear, which was taken from the "ring" november 2nd 1932 "Heros of Sport" and it is the same person in the photo Cando sent me. Again thank you so much for your time and information, and any other help will be gratefully accepted. :D

Bobshop,

Are you able to tell us the name of Wally's parents please as can help us to find his death.

You can apply for his wife Amy's death certificate from   the B.D.M department of NSW, you can apply on line and  they will send it to you, depending on their workload it could take around three weeks or longer.
costs at the moment of $29.00
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/searchHistoricalRecords.htm

Or you can use a transcription agent for around $19.00
They can send you  the copy directly to you by email so the turnround is usually a few days.

http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/howToTraceYouFamTree.htm#TranscriptionAgent

there are there to choose from, I use Laurie Turtle and have had no problems but I know  a lot   of folk also use the others with the same result.

The difference between  the two sources is  the government certificate is a certified true copy and  the transcription agents are not,  but  they have the same information.

The death certificate will list any children she may have had,  there does appear to be at a least one child by  the electoral rolls, but that is only supposition.

The death certificate will reveal where she is buried and we may be able  then to see who may be buried with her, ie Wally.

As the on line indexs for death only go to 1979 it is possible he died after that.

Hi Folks
This is all very interesting as my mother in law just asked me to look up what happen to her Uncle Walter Hancock who emigrated to Australia and became a welter weight boxing champ in the 1930. So I have the following to add, that Walter was the son of Ernest Edward Hancock and Edith (nee Mather), they can be found on the 1911 UK census at 23 Rockwood St, Keningston Liverpool and he had the following siblings at the time - Ernest Edward (b~1908) and  John (b~1910). Later there was a sister Ethel, still working out the details - can anyone confirm this is Walter's family? I have not found brother Bertram yet to help with the connection and it looks like there was another Walter born in 1906 in Liverpool.
Thanks
Becky

Welcome to Rootschat, Pago12 and rdtaylor3

You need 3 posts before you can use the private Message facility on Rootschat, so each of you needs 2 more posts.

It does seem that there are two Walter HANCOCKs.

There is this one, whose 1911 details are already given by rdtaylor (Becky)

FreeReg has a birth
Walter HANCOCK, registered W. Derby (Lancashire), Vol 8b,   p581

Baptism, Christ Church Kensington, Liverpool
July 30, 1905
Walter HANCOCK, born 18 June 1905
Parents: Ernest Edward and Edith HANCOCK, of 44 Ruthin St; his occ: carter
This Walter had siblings Ernest, John, Margaret, Elsie and Edna.

I do not think he is connected with Walter the boxer.

Hi Pago12

Now you have the three posts.  I have no connection to this family personally - I'm just a person who enjoys genealogy so try to add what I can to the searches of others.

Barry - you will need to make 3 posts and then you can use the PM system, as your email address is likely to be removed from your post.  However, I'll PM it to the two other people on the thread and they should get an email notifying them of a reply on thread.
