Hi, I seem to have hit a brick wall with these two families can anyone help please.
John James Cawley (B.1873) in 1898 married Jessie Elsby(B.1871). I think his parents were William and Lavina. Her parents were John Elsby and Sarah Swain.
Any help will be appreciated

Welcome.
I found John James Cawley marrying Jessie Elsby on the
26th March 1898 at Elworth, Cheshire
His Father was William Cawley and I found the family living in
Northwich on the 1881 census
William is a widower by that time 31 and a Shipwright
and the children are
John aged 7
Florence aged 5
Harry aged 3
and Sarah Ann the sister aged 23 as a Housekeeper
all born at Northwich

I have had a look for John and a Lavinia but cant find any marriage between such names that would produce William.
I did find a John on the 1871 census aged 53 with his wife
Sarah aged 47,
William is 21
John is aged 18
Martha aged 16
Sarah Ann aged 13 who is on the 1881 aged 23 looking after the children
Mary C aged 11
Sophia aged 9
Thomas aged 6
Fanny aged 4
I did find children of William being called
Lavinia, Ida and Fred
Just wondered if you got Williams child Lavinia mixed up as his wife?
as he is a widower on the 1881 census so might have got remarried
I have John James marriage to Jessie as 26th March 1898 at Elworth, Cheshire. with Father as William
I think I found William born in 1850 10th March, with parents Joseph and Elizabeth

Now this looks very interesting as my gran was called Lavina and had sister Ida and brother Fred. Thanks for your help I look into it it further. Also so my great grandad was John James Elsby so you have the right family I think. Thanks more work to do I think.

I have an Elsby in my family tree but a long way back. However, you may be interested...
My Elizabeth Elsby/Hellsby was the dau of a William bapt 7 Mar 1718 in Frodsham Cheshire and married George Proffet/Prophet whose family was also from that parish. However, they both appear in Haslington, just down the road from Sandbach, by the 1730's. It was suggested to me that perhaps the Crewe family of Crewe Hall had something to do with families moving across the county. Good luck with your research!

I've just come across your post. I have Jessie Elsby (b 1871) daughter of John Elsby and Sarah Swain in my family tree. I've traced the Elsby line back to 1763 so far and would be happy to swap info. Also from what you've written I'd say we are 5th cousins once removed!
