Title: Long delay on Wills
Post by: jo1962 on Thursday 30 September 10 14:51 BST (UK)
Hi all,
I applied to York on the 23rd August for 3 wills. The cheque cleared in my account on the 2nd September but they still haven't arrived.  :( Is it normal to wait this amount of time? Anybody else got the same problem?
Cheers

I think it takes about six weeks.

Hi there,

I am having a similar wait for mine, the cheque cleared weeks ago.  They probably have a huge quantity of them to process. :(

Hi,

When I queried a delay I was told to allow 21 "working" days from receipt of cheque.  The last one I ordered took exactly that!

Hi Jo

I ordered some on 15th August.  Most of them arrived on Monday this week.  Still waiting for one though.

The wills were posted from the Birmingham District Probate Registry so it looks like York is farming out the workload.

I ordered a will on 18 August.  I went away for a week on Sunday 19 August and it was on the doormat when I got back.  So well over the 21 days they specify on their site.  I think it is due to Ancestry putting the index of wills on their site, because last time I sent for a will, a couple of years ago, I got it within a few days.

I e-mailed  the Probate Registry in York last Friday and they apologised for the wait (I ordered one on August 28). Understandably there is a considerable backlog or orders due to the Probate Calendars being released on ancestry. When they e-mailed me back they said they were currently working on processing orders from August 16th.

So I may have to wait another fortnight for mine. But they do genuinely seem to be holding a lot of weight at the moment.

Matt :)

Looks like I was lucky that my order of 18 August has already been delivered.  Maybe it was because it was a fairly modern  ??? will - well 1908.

Yes, I'm still waiting for mine, cheque dated 20 Aug and cashed 2nd Sept, I also ordered some from the Borthwick Institute at the same time and they haven't arrived either (cheque cashed 23rd Sept), I'm guessing from Reayboys post I'll just have to be patient.

Thanks everybody. It would seem I just have to be patient a while longer.

I certainly would not lose heart, they are definitely on their way...but I admit to being impatient when the prospect of a new find is on the way!

And an update from getting copies of wills from Holborn via their counter service.

Due to the increased demand for wills the one hour service in unavailable unless you are a regular customer.

The staff at Holborn will still take money and accept orders for wills on the postal service but this will take at least 21 days now.

That's interesting angelfish.  I wonder where my "missing one" will come from?

It is, of course, the one I really need.  ::)

i would like to order one not sure how much tho can anyone tell me ? is it same  cost for 1880s and 1890s wills and do you need to know exact date of probate ? or just name/death /place &such? thought this would help find more info this way on the way they lived  etc       cheers jane ann

Hi Jane Ann

It is better if you can check the probate calendars to make sure there is a will before making an application.

The probate calendars 1858-1941 (except for a few missing years) have recently been put online at Ancestry but you will need a subscription. If you don't have one, check your local library to see if they have access to Library Edition which you can access for free at your local library.

Once you have seen the relevant entry in the calendar, make a note of the full name, the date of death, whether it is a Probate or Admon, where it was proved, and the date it was proved.

Copies cost £5 and you need to send your application to York

There is more info here

http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/cms/1226.htm

Most wills are proved within 5yrs from death but some do take longer.

Hi ringrose

Mine took about 4 weeks.  I guess they are getting a lot of orders now that ancestry have the probate calendar.  They are probably flooded with orders!

When I queried a delay I was told to allow at least 21 "working days" from receipt of the cheque.  I guess the online access to the calendar has increased the demand.

The Principal Registry at Holborn are also quoting 21 days and are not accepting orders at the counter on the one hour service unless you are a regular customer.

Mine arrived yesterday, approximately 7 weeks after posting the application.  Yes it was a long wait but worth it  :)

Around the 10th Sept I sent for 2 wills. The £10 cheque was cashed on 23rd Sept. As no wills have arrived I rang the York Probate Office and a recorded message lets you know they are dealing with  wills reqests 27th August and anyone who has a cheque cashed before that date to ring ---a number is given. At this rate I will be lucky if I get anything in the next few weeks yet the cheque has gone through.

I had just the same problem back in June. Cheque cashed promptly. No wills by September. Phoned the number they gave and had to repeat the details of my required wills and the date that the cheque was cashed.
They arrived within a few days. So it was worth phoning them.
Good luck Ringrose,

Hi,

I sent for some Wills before details were available on line, queried a delay and was told to allow at least "21 working days" from receipt of cheque.

I think they've been inundated since going online. Mine took quite a few weeks, you just have to be patient I'm afraid!

Interestingly, I ordered mine form York and they came from Norwich!  ???

Mine did too.  I ordered about 20 August and went away on 19-26 Sept.  When I arrived the will was on the doormat, so couldn't have taken more than 21 working days.

I wonder if they have just sent a load to Norwich to deal with as they are so inundated with requests thanks to Ancestry.  I bet not many people requested wills when it meant going to the library to look at microfiche or similar.

A will I ordered by post from York on 21 September finally arrived today - just over six weeks later.   It came from the Leeds District Registry with a note of apology for the delay "due to an increase in the volume of search requests" and notes that they are taking steps to rectify matters.

As a matter of interest it took them nearly two weeks to cash my cheque (which cleared my bank on 4 October) so they are clearly snowed under with postal requests since Ancestry put the index online.

My second lot were much quicker, I posted my order on 4th October and they arrived on the 29th (from Ipswich) so much more like the time scale you would expect.

all the previous posts on this thread date from 2010 and were for postal applications and postal delivery. This rather lengthy thread relates to electronic application and emailed will images and various people discuss delays https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=816033.234
