Post by: cacasmum on Thursday 21 October 10 13:25 BST (UK)
Hello can anyone help....... My grandfather owned a  cafe on the Barry docks around 1918. His name was Kastavunis and he was Greek. I am lead to believe he also lived on the docks would anyone have any information on this.

The name i have given is his surname his full name is Pangotis Kastavunis and yes i have tried him on the 1911 census with no luck. He came to Britain on board a ship( dont know the date) from Romania even though he was Greek.

He settled in Barry opening a cafe and he would also supply provisions to ships  sailing out of Barry.

Cheers
Sharon

hi sharon. just a thought you say he had a cafe on barry docks that is possible of course but the shopping area of barry, i.e. holton road, thompson street etc. was known localy as barry dock, still is today, so somebody relating the story to you would say he had a shop in barry dock, meaning the town area, i will look up all my books on local history and the street directories and let you know, kali.(http://)

Hi Ken

Thank you so much for you help it is very much appreciated ..... i have looked on line and have found three cafes The blue cafe on the corner of Thompson Street and Greenwood Street,
Fenneys Temprance Bar on Holton Road and Spicketts Rock Cafe on Main Street.

You are right i was told he owned a cafe and lived on the docks i asumed it was literally on the docks so this explains a lot for me.... The fog is lifting.

Would you be able to tell me how far from the docks is Maughan Street Penarth? This is where my father was born.

Once again thanks you have been soooo helpfull.

Cheers

Sharon

hi, sharon,
penarth is only four or five miles from barry and is quite a small place
although the dock was very succesful in the days of coal shipment and many families worked there before coming to barry, which became the largest dock in the world at that time and drew men from all over the world to work there including seamen from all parts of the world, we had avery large fraternity of greek families who mostly ended up running a buisness of some description
there was big money to be earnt and a new town to set up home in.
the docks and town was built by these people from all corners of the world and their families still reside there to this day, many of them becoming very succesful buisness men, who i think are all proud of what they achieved, regarding the blue cafe i knew the owners very well but belive it or not i cannot recall their name at the moment as we always called her mama but i will find out tommorow, well im rambling on a bit so will let you know what i can find out tommorow, bye, kali.

Hi Sharon from a distant relative of yours in Cyprus.
Are you daughter of Toulla, Margarita or Ioanna?

I have some information of Kastavounis Family since they married in the Pittarakie family.
I know that your post is already 8 years old but maybe you will see this message.

The blue Café on corner of Thompson Street and Greenwood Street was run by a Greek family but after many years I cannot recall their name. The area has now been redeveloped and the café no longer exists but was well known.
