I am searching for the parents of an Edward Bevan b:1840/41 in Tredegar area - on his marriage cert his father's name is Thomas Bevan....I have traced in the 1881 Census and found him in Himalaya Range, Tredegar, monmouthshire.....There is an Edward Bevan married to Margaret Edwards (my gggrandparents)...........A David Bevan living next door with his wife Elizabeth and their family and further down the street is a Thomas Bevan married to a Sarah with two children living at home.......I then found in the 1851 Census a family:
Head: Thomas Bevan b1816
Wife: Sarah Bevan
Son: Edward b1840
Son: David b1844
Son: Thomas b1851To cut a long story short - DAVID the son b 1844 above .........one of his ancestors that I am researching with has obtained his birth cert and it transpires the mother's name is Sarah Pritchard, meaning that there should be a marriage somewhere or maybe they didn't get married? We are assuming that this is the right connection and that the Edward and David in 1851 are the same as in 1881.........as all the dates of births add-up and places of births also add-up, basically we have done a very good search on tracing different options and from what info we have we are assuming that it is a Thomas Bevan married to a Sarah Pritchard.
I am aware that Edward and David might not be brothers, however after many checks on the census records, I am unable to trace other options....anyway, hope you can understand what I have sent and apologies for sending the long version, I couldn't explain any other way.............sorry. I should imagine you wish you had never asked!!!....Thanks. x

Hi
That's helpful and you have clearly done a lot of research
I have had a look at the 1881 entry and notice that both Thomas & Sarah were born in Breconshire - not Monmouth - so there is a possibility that is where they may have married
Thomas was b 1812 and Sarah 1821
David Bevan was 37 in 1881 so b 1843/4
Freebmd has 2 birth entries for David Bevan in 1844 - both in Abergavenny
and this marriage
Marriages March qtr 1839
BEVAN William Merthyr Tydfil 26 451
PRITCHARD Sarah Merthyr Tydfil 26 451

Thanks for the quick response......... I also came across the marriage for William Bevan and Sarah Pritchard ....however it transpires on the marriage cert for the son Edward Bevan to Margaret Edwards that the fathers name is Thomas.....I also have come across a Sarah Pritchard 20yrs with an Edward Pritchard 1yr in the 1841 Census for Sirhowy Iron Works and in the same street is a Thomas Bevan 25yrs with his father and family.
So my thoughts so far are that one possibility could be: Sarah had Edward before she married Thomas and then changed Edward's surname to Bevan when she married Thomas and then had David and son on. So I am assuming that the time period for the marriage would be around 1841-1844 as we have David's birth cert and it states his mother's name as Sarah Pritchard and father's name as Thomas Bevan. I really don't know how to detangle this situation but am working on it!
Any info is greatly appreciated - thanks in advance

Hi Gaynor..
Have You considered the marriage of Thomas Bevan and Ann Pritchard 1844 december quarter in monmouth.. i have Bevans from sirhowy in my tree.. and have found names have been " turned around " my thoughts are maybe sarah was ann sarah but she preferred to be called sarah. or that the registar put the inncorrect name..

Thanks for the info, have already got it though, and do think that just maybe your idea may be worth looking into again, only reason I put it on the back burner was I have all the census records and there is not a mention anywhere of her being an Ann or part of her name if you understand what I mean, however I will take another look into this and maybe it might be worth ordering the cert to know for sure.
Anyway, thanks again, very much appreciated, any bits of info are welcome.

Hello Gaynor
Just a thought, are You sure Sarah was not married previously ?.. to a mr pritchard ?..
in 1884.. mary ann green (greening as mispelt ) married lot millard in pontypridd..
in 1887 .. she remarried henry stewart pontypridd , not in her previous married name but in her maiden name... green.. i am wondering if this is what happenend in Sarahs case.. ??
Found these marriages not sure if them though.. worth a look.. if You haven't looked already !
Sarah watkins married (possibly ) John or william pritchard in hereford & c 1840 ref 26 243
sarah watkins married thomas bevan 1859 monmouth 11a 319.. long shot , but they could have lived as mr and mrs on the 1851 census.. .. will keep trawling.. tc jui

I have transcribed a lot of possibles for Sarah and I also wondered if she was married before. I do know that her maiden name was Pritchard as she was living with her sister on the 1841 census, but who she married before Thomas is something that I am looking into at the moment, if she married at all that is, but I am considering the possibility that she may have married and maybe he died which would be the reason why I can't find an Edward Pritchard or Bevan birth record (her son), as it would have probably been registered under the father's name (her previous husband if there is one), so any info is appreciated and any ideas that you have.
Also I have read that couples married in the women's parish which could have been Merthy Cynog in Breconshire, which isn't that far away and is where Sarah comes from. So I have a list of all the marriages dating from about 1837 to 1840, and am looking into it.
In the meantime thank you for your time and efforts, very much appreciated.

Me again...
Have You considered the marriage between Thomas Bevan and Sarah RICHARDS.. possible that the registar mistakingly did not put the p in front ??.. merthyr tydfil 1846..got a good feeling about that one.. tc..jui

No I hadn't considered that one, thanks. I have spent many hours correcting the transcripts on Ancestry because it said Richards and should be Pritchard, so that is defo something to think about, will investigate further.
Your very helpful, thank you!!!
