Hi Dawn,
Thanks for your reply. I investigated the family you outlined and took it back to a Ralph Shorrock (fairly sure I have the right ones ...). In this case there is almost certainly a link - Ralph was a common name in the family and goes back to Ralph Shorrock and Hannah Harwood in the 18th century.
Let me know if you want any further info about this family - and the Nancarrows, who are also there in abundance!
Cheers,
Ros
PS You can always pick the addicts who have run out of people of their own to look up!

Hello,
I bumped into the Shorrocks lot while researching the Eccles of Lower Darwen, cotton manufacturers. Prominent amongst the names was Eccles Shorrocks, Mill owner. There was much about him and the rest of the family in the "Cottontown" website of Blackburn Library and also on a CD I have-" Darwen and its people" ( or similar) by Jeremy Hunt. they intermarried with the Eccles at several points.

Hi,
Do you have anything on a Mary Shorrock, born about 1835, that married a Richard Pickering, July 21 1851, they had 10 children born Over Darwin

Elaine, thanks for the Cotton Town address. What an interesting site!
Eccles Shorrock (who was by far the most famous member of the family) was a distant relation - and thanks to the info I gleaned on the site I was able to establish exactly how.
My husband is writing a biography of his great-grandfather, so all this makes great background material.
No sign amongst our lot of a Mary Shorrock, sorry Charlene.
Cheers,
Ros

Hello From Canada. I am researching Marcus Shorrock who married Ethel Whalley in 1913. Ethel whalley b Oct. 16 1891.
I have so far no information on Marcus Shorrock, but assumed he also was in Burnley.
Any help greatly appreciated on this marriage and also if there were any children in this marriage.
Ethel is my Grandmother's Sister

Hi again,
I think I have finally found my Mary Shorrock, I believe that she was born Feb 14th 1834, and was the daughter of Ralph Shorrock and Alice Entwistle. she was born Over Darwin, and was c. Mar 23 1834, Lower Chapel Darwin. Does anyone know anything about her or have any connections. She had 4 sisters, Ellen, 1826, Sarah Ann 1827, Nancy 1829, and Hannah 1832, she also had 2 brothers Thomas, 1834 and Ralph 1839.

Good Afternoon.
I am a Shorrock, realated to John Yates Shorrock. He was my great grandfather who killed himself by drowning in a Dolly Tub. I'm researcing my family tree but have got a bit stuck with all the Ralph's, so i'm putting it away for a bit or i could end up making a mess. lol.

A 'John Shorrock, bookeeper' is named on the marriage certificate of Richard Sharples at St James Church, Over Darwen, in 1864, as the father of the groom.
Any clues about this link, or the difference in surnames? I've been unable to find anything online about the earlier life of John or Richard (except Richard in 1864 was a widowed carter), but would very much like to find out more on behalf of a friend here in in Bristol
Many thanks
Pete

One possibilty is that his mother wasn't married at the time of his Richard's birth but he knew the name of his father.
There is this baptism on Lancsopc website.
Baptism 26 Sep 1817 St Mary the Virgin, Blackburn, Lancashire, England
Richd. Sharples Son of Ann Sharples, Spinster
Abode: Over Darwen
Baptised by: R. Dobson
Register: Baptisms 1817 - 1822, Page 11, Entry 86

The 1841 census has a Richard Sharples living with Thomas and Ann Immison and children.
HO107; Piece: 503.
Again on Lancsopc there is this marriage
Marriage 1 Jan 1823 St Mary the Virgin, Blackburn, Lancashire, England
Thomas Eminson (X), Weaver Bachelor, This Parish
Ann Sharples (X), Spinster This Parish
Witness: Robert Hutchinson; Ellen Sharples, (X)
Married by Banns by Jno Will'm Whittaker Vicar
Register: Marriages 1821 - 1823, Page 207, Entry 619
Source: LDS Film 1278807
Given that the witnesses on Richard's 1864 marriage were something that looks very much like Imimson I think that this could be the correct record.

I'm sorry Pete I'm forgetting my manners, I should have wished you a very warm welcome to Rootschat :)
Richard is a widower on his 1864 marriage. Be interesting to see if he names John Shorrock as his father on his first marriage :)

An inspired bit of research there, Rolnora - that Immison/Emmison/Eminson name does look like the glue that holds it together. Turns it from mere speculation into high probability in my book.
I'd certainly not expected such a good result so quickly (if ever) - Richard Sharples' great grandson will be delighted! Many thanks.
