Title: John & Elizabeth Cathie
Post by: Alwina on Tuesday 19 October 10 14:51 BST (UK)
I am trying to find any information On John & Elizabeth Cathie a brother and sister (there may have been others) who first show up on  the 1841 census as from Ireland in 1851 they are both from Wicklow. Elizabeth married Thomas Wheeler and was murdered by her son in 1852.
John Cathie was a publican in the Eastend of London.
I would like to find out anything about them. Wicklow archives can find nothing.

You need to know their religion and what part of Wicklow they came from - i.e. parish.  Not all parishes have early records.  I'm presuming the dates involved would be 1820s or earlier ?

Since you dont have a location or parish the only method I can think of at the moment  is an online search of the records available on the pay-website of the Irish Family History Foundation (IFHF) at : http://www.rootsireland.ie/

Note the website only has baptisms for Co. Wicklow (RC and CofI) at the moment .. no marriages.

I am not sure what exactly you mean with 'Wicklow Archives'... was this a library, family history centre or somewhere else ?
The database used by family history centre has the same data as the IFHF website

I tried the IFHF and the Wicklow family history centre who also searched. Nothing was shown at all.
Thanks for your time

Elizabeth Cathie married Thomas Wheeler, a tailor, in St. Mary at Lambeth in 1823. They had 4 children (Thomas, Elizabeth, Susannah and Alfred).  Thomas Wheeler's sister Susannah Wheeler married Elizabeth's brother William James Cathie, and there was a brother called John Cathie too.

I have only just found out about son Thomas Cathie Wheeler - some interesting newspaper articles out there!

Thomas Cathie Wheeler was certainley a "interesting" character. Charles Dickens wrote articles about him and his murdering of his mother in 1852. He died in 1906 in Broadmoor, he was one of their first inmates.  John Cathie started off as a publican and he and his sons seem to have been involved in most of the Public house in the East end, One son Edmund William Cathie owned Simpsons restaurant in the Strand, google his name and you will find out about him. In articles about him however he is described as Scottish!

Hello Alwina
I have just come across you entry regarding Cathie.
I too am researching the Cathie family on behalf of a friend, * Campbell (b in India 1928) d/o John Campbell and Marjory Cathie. Marjory descends from John Cathie and Sarah Faulkner.
I have a lot of info regarding this family, and am at present gathering info on Thomas Cathie Wheeler. His records in Broadmoor are available at Berks Record Office.
If you would like to contact me direct on *  perhaps we might progress from there.
Yours sincerely

Roy Passingham
