Title: Williamson Port Glasgow
Post by: carolmcg on Monday 18 October 10 18:59 BST (UK)
Looking for anyone who can help with information about the Williamson family from Port Glasgow

I am looking for details of Charles David Williamson thought to have been born in Port Glasgow Scotland 1922.
We know he died in March 1981 but have no further details  I can't find a wedding cert for him but think his wife was called Agnes McLeod
I think that Agnes mother may have been called Helen but that is all the details I have.

Hi
Thanks I went and got a copyof the cert and my research has moved on a little now.
Would still love to hear from anyone in Greenock/Port Glasgow who is working on a Williamson tree.

Hi Carolmcg,
I have Williamsons in my tree, including Charles and William and Samuel. Have we been in touch through Genes do you think?? If so I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Susan
we may well have been in touch through Genes :)

I have had to backtarck slightly on my tree because I think Iwas researching the wrong Williamsons.
The only thing I know for sure is that Charles Williamson c1877 married Margaret Harper and had a son William Willliamson  1896-1947.

I don't know if Charles and Margaret had any more children.

I ordered a wedding cert to start with in order to get the maiden names of mothers in order to work back but have came up against a problem very quickly.

I have a death certificate and a wedding cert for my husbands Great Grandfather and the details on it led me to search for his mother and father.

William James Williamson (no birth cert) 26 years old on wedding cert in 1921 when he married Susan Brennen (25 on cert)
Married in Greenock Renfrewshire.
Death cert for William in 1947 Susan listed as spouse and they were living in Port Glasgow Renfrewshire.

Williams parents from both certs are listed as Charles Williamson (labourer) and Margaret Williamson nee Harper (deceased)

I also can't find a death cert for Charles Williamson but know that the cemettery records show his sons plot contains William,Charles and Susan.
William has a remebrance stone as he was killed in conection with WW2 and the commonwealth war graves info is "Service No: 2984933
Additional information: Son of Charles and Margaret Williamson; husband of Susan Williamson, of Port Glasgow.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead"

I can only find one death for Margaret Harper in the area and it's for an infant. No wedding cert for her or Charles and no death cert for Charles

Any Ideas what I should try next?

Hi Carol

One of the reasons you may not be finding BMD entries for the Williamsons may be because they were Irish? Have a look at this family on the 1901 Irish census in Londonderry www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Londonderry/Waterside/Bonds/1539590/

Fits well with what you have  :)

This looks to be this Williamson family in 1911 still in the same place www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Londonderry/Londonderry_No__5_Urban/Bonds_Street/605947/

Mother Margaret has died and father Charles looks to have remarried one year previously. If you click on the link for the Household Return (Form A), you can see the original image for the household entry.

Possible marriage for a Margaret (Maggie) Harper and a Charles Williamson in 2nd Qrt 1892 in Londonderry. Both entries show with the same refs.: Vol.2 Pg. 155. See here for details on entries http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=home

From the same link above, there are a couple of possibilities for your William's birth, including:

William James Williamson, 3rd Qrt 1895, Vol. 2 Pg. 144 in Londonderry.

Thank you for all your help I will go and have a look now :)

EDIT: Thanks for all your help it does looks like it might be them but sadly I can't get the certs online.
I can't find a death cert for Charles or his new wife on Scotlands people so it looks like they might not have come over as a family which still leaves me with a "charles williamson" buried in the Port that I can't account for - no deaths on Scotlands people for infants that could have possiblybe Williams son.

Guess I am going to have to give this up which is sad when I managed to get my own line so far back.

Just got the cert for the wedding it gave me a few more details allowing me to find the Harper side of the family on the census returns. Margarets father was Hugh Harper (labourer)
Sadly not as much information as the Scottish certs but it did tell me that Charles Williamsons father was  Robert Williamson and he was noted as a "taylor" under occupation.
The address given for Charles was Spencer Road Derry but I was not able to find anything further using the census returns or family search.
Ideas of where to go now would be welcome.........I am not even sure of the mothers names :(

With the info you have now from the marriage entry, how about this 1901 census entry for the Harpers and Maggie's family www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Londonderry/Waterside/Bonds_Place/1539654/ - helps that it potentially shows the link to Williamson with a grandson Robert Williamson showing in the household...also the address links up with the 1901 Williamson address.

Again, given the occupation of Robert Williamson in son's marriage cert, how about this entry in 1901 on the Williamson side for his parents www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tyrone/Mountcastle/Stranabrosny/1750776/ Would fit well with Charles showing as born in Co. Tyrone.

Something to work from on both families hopefully  :)

Thank you Monica!
I found the Harper side of the of the family last night and thought it was the right one with the grand child being Williamson.

I was wondering if there is a way of checking census returns for other years in Ireland?
Do you think that Eliza would be short for Elizabeth ?
Sorry I am asking way more questions than I aught to - maybe one day I will be able to return the help that you have given me.

The first complete census for Ireland is 1901- only fragments of earlier ones survive (for Co. Londonderry only 1831 which lists head of household and number of males and females in household).
Both 1901 and 1911 are available (free) online- www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search

Eliza is most likely short for Elizabeth but she will probably show as either on different registrations. This is a great website for first name variants www.whatsinaname.net which is always worth a look.

Ask as many questions as you need to Carol - that's what great about RootsChat  ;)

Thanks for all your help :)

I did manage today to get one answer from my first post.

I called Inverclyde Council and asked about the lair at Port Glasgow cemetery and then were brilliant giving me the information I needed so I now know that the Charles Williamson buried there was infact the brother of William James  (child of Charles Williamson and Margaret Harper).
He had died in Glasgow and the death registered there although he was living with his brother at the time in Port Glasgow and the person listed on the death cert was his younger brother George Williamson c1900 and at the time (1957) he was still living in Waterside Londonderry although I could not read the street address on the cert.

Finding the Irish side of the tree very hard as I can find nothing else about the family on-line but have added these details in the hope someone might come across the post at some point - so strange that I can find no one else researching the same family.

From what I have heard, Inverclyde Council staff are incredibly helpful  :) That is great that you have been able to determine who this Charles Williamson was and in this way link it all back to the census entries and family we had in Waterside.

Don't lose hope Carol. The Irish side is hard for most people. In a way you have been fortunate to find the direct links over to Ireland and the right family. I know though that having picked up the trail, you now want to go back further and it can be frustrating.

Keep fingers crossed that someone may recognise these names in the future and be in touch  :)

Thank you I went and checked all of those against the dates I had from the census returns and they were very close so happy I have as near to the right dates as possible now.

Don't think there is any point in ordering any more certificates though as I have the one for Charles and Margaret Harpers wedding so have their fathers names now as Robert Williamson and Hugh Harper (no dates for these two as cert only stated "full age") and I managed to get a few more details from the Harper side using the census returns you guys linked me up with  :)

Does the Irish birth cert give the mothers maiden name the same as the Scottish ones? do you think it would be worth trying to find/ paying for Charles Williamson c1867 birth cert?

Closest I can find in IGI (but can't find in civil index) is Charles Williamson born 15 June 1871 Co.Londonderry- parents Charles Williamson and Alice Bradley

Irish birth certificates list date and place of birth, child's name (if one has been chosen), father's name and occupation, mother's name (including maiden name), name of informant (parent or person present at birth), date of registration.

Thank you.
Don't think that is him though because I got the wedding cert for Charles and Margaret and it has his father listed as Robert Williamson - occupation "Taylor". I am happy that I have the correct cert because I have two more from the Scottish end reguarding their children.
I have no further details on Robert or the mothers name although there was one census return which might have been the correct one having the wifle listed as Eliza.

Hi

The William Williamson in my tree (1896-1947) lived in Kelburn Terr - Port Glasgow- this is the address on his death cert. He is buried in Port Glasgow with his wife Susan Brennan and his brother Charles Williamson (1899 - 1957).
The death of Charles was notified by his brother John Williamson who gives his address in 1957 as  Waterside Londonderry.

I know that William Williamsons father was Charles Williamson who was married twice - Margaret Harper his first wife and then to Eliza Jane Taylor - both of these weddings taking place in Ireland.

Are you related in any way  to this family?
