Title: McKay's in Australia
Post by: sae on Sunday 17 October 10 07:30 BST (UK)
Greetings All,

I'm looking for some information on my GGG Grandparents John (born abt 1822) and Helen(Ellen) (born abt 1835) McKay. Born in Scotland (maybe the parish of Urray??) Their parents are said to be John - John McKay (farmer) and Margaret Henderson, Helen - Alexander McKay (blacksmith) and Helen McDonald.

They seemed to have been married somewhere between 1850-1859 and then left for Australia, where their first child Margaret was born in 1859 in Kyneton, Victoria.

They ended up on a farm called Beauly Farm in Cohuna Victoria where John died in 1899, Helen died in 1909

If anyone can give me any information on a marriage date or baptisms etc I would be very greatful.

Regards

Sherree

They certainly didn't stick to the naming tradition if those are the grandparents

Hi Sherree,

Are you also looking for information about Alexander McKay, the blacksmith, and Helen McDonald?

I know I have information about them (I have to search for it), because Alexander McKay was the reputed father of one of my illegitimate relatives. I remember finding the family in the 1841 census, I think in Kilmorack, quite close to Urray.

Cheers,
Francisco

Hi Sherree,

This is Alexander McKay and family in 1841, living in Kilmorack (no specific address), Inverness:

Alexander MCKAY 35 Blacksmith born outside census county
Helen MCKAY 30 born Inverness-shire
William MCKAY 10
Elizabeth MCKAY 8
Helen MCKAY 8
Elspet MCKAY 6
James MCDONALD 60 born outside census county
William BAIN 20 Smith apprentice born ouside census county

I have some births which I think I got from IGI:

William born 9 OCT, bap 18 OCT 1829 in Kirkhill, Inverness
Elizabeth bap 16 JUN 1832 in Kilmorack
Helen bap 31 JUL 1835 in Kilmorack
Eppy bap 11 FEB 1838 in Kilmorack
Mary bap 21 AUG 1841 in Kilmorack

I guess the James McDonald in the census could be Helen's father, but I never checked this out.

Alexander McKay had an illegitimate daughter, called Sarah (Sally), with Ann McDonald, around 1828. I've never found a link between Helen and Ann McDonald, and that's why I didn't search deeper into Alexander.

I'll see if I have something on the other couple, John McKay and Margaret Henderson.

Cheers,
Francisco

Looks like John McKay and Margaret Henderson married 20 March 1818 in Urray, but I haven't found them together in the 1841 census.

Hi,

Found Alexander McKay and family also in the 1851 census, living at Lettoch, Kilmorack. Although daughter Helen is no longer there, it gives a little extra information + another sister (Dina) and a step-brother?

Alexander McKay Head 51 Blacksmith born Fodderty
Helen Mckay Wife 50 born Urray
Elizabeth McKay Dau 12 House servant born Kilmorack
Mary McKay Dau 9 Scholar born Kilmorack
Dina McKay Dau 6 Scholar born Kilmorack
Alexr McDonald Stpson 11 Scholar born Urray

I wonder who Alexander McDonald was...

Cheers,
Francisco
