Any other info about them would be great.

Have you got William in the 1861, 1871 cornish census? or had he moved to Aus
Just thought it may help to fill gap and then work out which country marriage took place in

Great thanks so much for your help. Dee, I am new to this, could you tell me what the ref = cla refers to? Also you mention that Williams father is John? I am puzzled as to this as i understand his father is James Ladner Rowe, and James father is John. if that is correct then dose your infor still follow?
Many thanks from New Zealand
-
Hi Smitham,,
Ref = Cla means the reference needed for ordering a certificate is Cla 47/300, meaning the district of Clare, Book 47, page 300. :)
As to the father being John, that is exactly what information is contained on the index record for the marriage between a William Mathew ROWE & a Jane LAWES.
The children I listed all had their parents given as William ROWE and Jane LAWES. :-\
There is one marriage between a Thomas Mathew ROWE, aged 22 and single, and an Elizabeth Jane MARTIN aged 25 and single, with the fathers given as James Ladner ROWE and William MARTIN. This took place in the Wesleyan Church, Pirie St, Adelaide on 11th April 1878.

Also this marriage…..
Amelia Matthews ROWE, aged 35 and single, married Henry WREFORD, aged 42 and a widower, on 4th September 1879 at the residence of John Rowe, Adelaide.
Fathers = James Ladner ROWE & Simon WREFORD
Ref = Ade 120/932

wow thats interesting. does it say where the james Ladner is from? He should be from cornwall, or alternatally i have the wrong father for William Mathews? Thanks so much for your help
-
Nothing on the records I'm checking to say where he is from, but later I can check elsewhere. I'm going to have to take a break for a bit.
The children I listed for a William ROWE and a Jane LAWES have married in South Australia, and their father is listed as William Matthew/Mathew/Matthews ROWE in the marriage index.
It also appears that there were more children whose births I haven't yet found. I'll have another look for you.
Dee :)

Looks like you have the wrong parents for William. I note you initially say William Matthews ROWE was born in Madron in 1856 yet this William Matthews ROWE was born in Paul in 1829. This William Matthews ROWE was aged 45 in 1874 when he married Jane LAWES so this fits perfectly. These are certainly the parents of Henry Stanley ROWE.
William Matthews ROWE was baptised 1 Mar 1829 in Paul parents John and Maria

Gosh you people have given heaps of help, could you please tell me by any chance is there another henry Stanley born in sth Australia in 1881, i note you say herny was born in 1880.
my father had research years ago on very little info and he had written henry born in 1881 sth oz father william mathews and his father james ladner.
i just want to make sure before i make changes to my tree that we have the correct people. I understand my father could have got henry's birth year wrong but it is confusing the different father that you have found for william to what i was told
I appreciate your help

Hi Antionette,
There is no other Henry Stanley ROWE born in South Australia. The birth was 21 Dec 1880 so pretty close to 1881. The parents are correct to what you believe. The problem is the grandparents names and Williams date of birth. It is common to assume a man is about 24 at marriage (when the information is not known so perhaps that is how 1856 was guessed at knowing Henry's birth year)
It does not appear that James Ladner had a son William in 1856. Looking at 1861 Amelia is now widowed and there is no son William. Even looking back at 1841 and 1851 there is no surviving son named William appearing in any census so it appears they did not have a son named William. At least two of their children did come to SA Thomas Matthews ROWE and Amelia Matthews ROWE (It seems James Lardner's wife Amelia was also a Matthews)
Cheers Kris :)

I wondered if Maria and Amelia MATTHEWS may have been sisters (Both from Paul and we do often see brothers marrying sisters) but no they were not sisters.
Amelia MATTHEWS was born 5 Aug 1811 and baptised 24 Oct 1811 Penzance Wesleyan. Parents Thomas MATTHEWS and Margery of Paul
Cheers Kris :)

Hi Antionette
I was just doing a general google search for "William Matthews ROWE" and it came up with this post.
I am related to William, he would be my Great Great Great Grandfather! we dont have a lot of info on this side of the family and i was very excited to find you on here. I live in South Australia, I knew that 2 of williams brothers moved to New Zealand, but we didnt really have any further info. Do you have a family tree on the internet anywhere? I have one on Genes Reunited and ancestry.com.
I wasnt sure how to send you a personal message on this site, i just joined when i read your post.
I am related through Williams daughter Lucy Maud ROWE.
hope to hear back from you

Thanks Donna for putting your message on here. I Henry Stanley is my great grand father so William Matthews is my 2nd great grandfather. yes i have a tree on ansestry.com. i will have a hunt and see if i can find you there. We had very little info on William and further back until the help of these people here.
We live in New Zealand, Henry must have moved to New Zealand also and he married here....
I am thrilled to be able to get in contact with you

Hi Antoinette and Donna, Dee et all...
Thrilled to see this conversation...I am also a great great grandchild of James Ladner ROWE - Blacksmith of Buryas Bridge.
I have been looking at this familiy for quite a while and made a couple of freaky discoveries along the way which are not immediately obvious just looking at the online databases. And yes its very confusing with the generational use of the names James Ladner and William ROWE, and the "Matthews".
I am excited to hear the SA connection as we have been focused on WA - and recently discovered the NZ connection. There is lots to that. (I am from WA but in Canberra at present)
I am afraid I don't have the whole story neatly plotted (or cited) as yet, but have quite a bit of info you may find interesting re: New Zealand.
Not sure the protocols on this site for getting in touch. Happy to exchange email to continue the conversation.
kind regards
christine
