Title: disappearing act. William NORTHAM

William Northam, son of Eli and sarah Northam. 1881 census shows William as a farm labourer working for a William ackland Ellis. No sign of him living at either household in the 1871 census. Mary Northam was his sister. William is shown as being born c1858. Have got the marriage certificate for William and his Wife Isabella Billing.
Where do i go from here?

If you haven't already got this information by now, then the missing 1871 census for William Northam is below:

Glebe Farm, Upottery, Devon
William ANSTICE, Head, married, age 60, farmer of 90 acres, born Upottery, Devon
other ANSTICE family then
William NORTHAM, servant, single, age 12, farm servant, indoor, born Yarcombe, Devon

I think William is my grandfather. If so, I know exactly what happened to him, and why.
