Can anyone help at all?
I am looking for The Carr, Balby, I believe this could be the name of a house.
My great grandmother (the lady in my profile picture) was born there in 1888, it is on her birth certificate.

Hi
According to the 1881 census The Carr must have been the name of a road or street as there are quite a few entries for it.
I will see if I can find the enumerators route so we can try and find it on the map

Hi
I would think it would be in the Carr Hill/Balby Carr Bank area.
Carr definition
A type of wetland with peaty soils, generally found in low-lying situations, with a distinctive woody vegetation cover consisting of trees.
Coming down Carr Hill from Balby Road is quite steep so we may assume that The Carr was possibly on the flatter, more industrial area further down.
Hope this helps a little. :)

Thanks both of you. I have been on google maps street view looking up and down Carr House Road, Carr View, etc etc...lol I was hoping I might find photos or something on the internet.
Other addresses I have are 43 & 50 Spansyke Street, those houses are still there. My Grandmas sister was born at 43.
23 Littlemoor Street, 147 Catherine St, 5 Hollindrakes Yard St. James Street and 42 Queen Street.
Was there a railway nearby as my great great grandfather was a railway signamlman.

Hi Gabbers,
There's a Littlemoor Lane in Balby so perhaps perhaps Littlemoor Street came off it at one time.
There used to be a Catherine Street close to the town centre, could that be the one?
At one time the railways were major employers in Doncaster and the Doncaster & District FHS have produced two CDs of staff based at the "Plant Works."

Thats great thanks for your help
I will check those out now ;D

Many aspects have been covered, but as one who worked at Carr Loco Doncaster for some years I would like to make a few additions: 1) The railways at Doncaster were the Great Northern of which Doncaster was the Headquarters, and subsequently part of the LNER, the next in local importance was the Midland railway, followed by the Great Central and a number of small local lines serving local collieries. 2) The excellent CDs of the Plant Works cover staff employed by the main works at Doncaster, and do not cover operating grade staff like signalmen and traincrew etc.3) Carr is a Norse word for fen, and water from the higher ground now Balby Road, and Green Dyke Lane would run down into the lower ground, leaving it often flooded and certainly boggy for most of the year.4) There was a signalbox known as Carr Box, guess where it was situated.

Thats great info, thanks for that.
I am still trawling the web hoping I might find some photos!!!!!!
-
To clarify my previous posting regarding the Plant Workers' CDs. Don't buy them unless you have people who you know or believe worked in the main works at some time. All other railway staff are excluded.

Thats what I thought and as he was a railway signalman there wouldnt be much point really
Thanks

Just taken expert opinion from my wife who lived in Doncaster all her life up to 3 years ago.
1)Spansyke Street -still there
2) Littlemoor St. -believed merged into Littlemoor Lane
3)St, James Street - street still there, but cleared during 1950s and replaced by tower blocks.
4)Catherine street and Queen Street cleared at the same time.
5)Holindrakes Yard - Never heard of it!! (Sorry)
-
Lovely...thankyou, I have seen the 2 houses on Spansyke Street on Google maps street view (they are opposite each other!!!)
Hollindrakes Yard was on St. James Street (that was the address on the census)
Thanks for your reply
-
Just up-dated my expert witness about Holindrakes Yard, in view of its location she was surprised she had never heard of it.Spansyke Street is in Hexthorpe, Catherine Street Hyde Park, St. James St. Balby Bridge; others Balby.
-
It was the 1911 census that the Yard appeared on, maybe it was just a little alleyway or something that has since gone... ???
-
Though the street name remains the area was cleared in the 1950s-1960s and replaced by tower blocks.
-
That explains it then!!!!
Thanks for that.

hi
I actually lived at 67 Littlemoor street in the early sixties We migrated to Australia and I'm finally visiting in about a month. Its sad that the house has gone but it was definitely at the back of the railway shunting yards and we used to play on the allotments. The houses were condemned in the sixties and pulled down

You will find the railway operations have been streamlined; i.e. largely shut down, presumably in the name of progress!
