Title: 1841 CENSUS - John Street, Lambeth - Look-up, please
Post by: lancs.rose on Friday 08 April 05 19:12 BST (UK)
If anyone has access to the 1841 CENSUS for the Lambeth area of Surrey would they please be able to do a look-up for me.

In 1851 the family I am looking for was at 18 JOHN STREET, LAMBETH, SURREY, and there is every chance that they were also at this address in 1841 as all their children were born in that area in the intervening decade.

The family should comprise, at least, GEORGE DAWKINS, aged about 30 and born in Kent; ELIZA DAWKINS, aged about 30 and born in Surrey (as were all her children); GEORGE ALEXANDER DAWKINS, aged about 5; ELIZA DAWKINS, aged about 3; and WILLIAM DAWKINS, aged about 1.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi
Might take a while to track down - rarely do they give street numbers in the 1841 and there are only 127 refs for John St.
Will get back to you as soon as I can.

When I get to No. 13 John st - it stops and says Doris St, but the numbers continue from that 13 onwards -
according to the index pages 45-47 cover 1 -24 John St - if this is the case, they are not at no 18 - it is a family of Stevens.
ref HO107 1060 ED7 45-57.
Lambeth actually comprises the following districts - can you narrow it down to one of these?
Waterloo Road
Church St
Kennington
Brixton
Norwood.
The information should be on the birth certificate.

Hi Cougar,

Thank you for the information.

I've just found a birth certificate for a member of the Dawkins family, a brother of one of my direct ancestors, which I had forgotten that I had obtained a couple of years ago.

This certificate shows that in February 1840 the family were at  19 John Street, off Cornwall Road, Waterloo.

The 1851 Census  shows the family at 18 John Street etc., so I would assume that they were in, or around, John Street in the intervening decade.

Three of the areas listed by you are definitely inappropriate, one (Church Street) is unlikely and the other Waterloo Road seems to be the right area as John Street is about 100 m. west of Waterloo Road at a point about 200 m. south from where that road crosses the Thames at Waterloo Bridge (hope that is not too confusing).

(I might just mention here that I have also posted a reply to your posting on King Street, supplying my e-mail address).

Thanks again.

Rosemary

Hi again
OK - am trawling through Lambeth at the moment for someone else so will keep an eye out for your Dawkins - I am actually in the district of Waterloo Rd.
As I said earlier, there are just so many John St's and so many come up under different names, will just take a while to find the correct John St.

Hi again,

Thanks - it would be great if you are able to come up with the Dawkins at John Street in 1841.
