Title: Matthew Lyle - Derry
Post by: jinks64 on Wednesday 13 October 10 15:50 BST (UK)
Hi folks, i was wondering if theres any records about for postmen circa 1870 - 1900. Found out that my great, great grandfather on my fathers side of the family was a local postman in the waterside area of the town. Would it be under the Royal Mail or An Post, and does anybody know do they keep records of their employees from that far back? All help greatly appreciated, thank you.

Londonderry is still part of the U.K. but not sure what records would be available for that time. Perhaps start with checking PRONI e-catalogue at www.proni.gov.uk (PRONI's closed until Aprul 2011 but website still working).
Another place to check would be old directories but probably only postmasters/mistresses would actually be listed.
