Does anyone have any links with Fennel parrott of patrington haven. He was born in 1818. I have lots of info if anyone needs any help.
-
Hi, sunk island,I have a connection to the Parrot family of Patrington. Sarah Parrot ,born 20 Jan 1832, married Brian Bielby on 22Jan 1854 at Patrington. They are my Gt.Gt. grandparents. I believe Sarahs father was a John Parrot born 12 Feb 1790 in Patrington. I believe they fished from the Haven But I have not gone to far into the family yet, I have concentrated on my Kent and other east yorks families. I was in connect with an Elizabeth Parrot who was reseaching but I lost her address when I moved, she lived near Leeds.
Best wishes Clive
-
sunkisland & Clivealbert ... I also am related. My Parrot is my 3x GGrandmother Jane Parrot 1826-1863 who married Robert Bielby (Brians brother)1830-?). They married in 1853 in Hull.
I don't have a great deal of information, I live in Australia, so I have to rely on online information!
-
Jane Parrott (not sure if it is one or two t's) parents were James Parrott & Elizabeth Holliday. I have Sarah Parrott parents as John Winter Parrott & Jane Turner.
Regards,
Sharon.
-
Hi,sootybear, I have it as one "T", John and Jane(Turner) are indeed the parents of Sarah.
Best wishes Clive

Hi, sootybear, many years ago i was in touch with a Elizabeth Parrot, she sent me the following.
The parrot family house was at Patrington Haven, it was called Field House, next to the Methodist church. At one point the family kept their fishing tackle in the chapel when it became disused.
When they went fishing, they would go for 2-3 days at atime, sell their catch at Grimsby market and bring enough home to sell locally and eat themselves. They ate fish every day with rock semper a green plant growing on the banks of the Humber. The family fished from the haven until it silted up, then about 1860 they kept the boats at stoney creek, this entailed a walk of 7 miles to and from home.Mining in the Humber in2WW stopped all fishing and pollution after the war saw adecline in fishing The last boat lay at stoney creek for years and at present is laying rotting in the mud. Clive

Hi 2 u both.
I live on Sunk Island which is the next Village to Patrington Haven. Clive the info that u had on how they fished and about Stone creek i found very interesting.
Do either of u know about the link with the Rank family. (As in the bread people) I found out about it awhile ago. And wondered if either of u had any more info about it. Just digging around in my files will let u know what i have when i find it. I must have a good sort out.
U both r the only people that i have been in contact with who r related from this branch of the family. And this makes me so happy. I have been on websites before and never been able to speak 2 any1 about them.
Take care.
-
Hi again,
Thank you very much for your information. It has been wonderful to hear the 'little' family stories. I have found facts, but the stories are what makes it. I have found a few articles in the Hull Packet on the Parrott men in fishing boat races. They took part in Humber Regatta's in the late 1850's to early 1860's.
Their boats names are: Dove, Francis Parrott; Morning Star, John Parrott; Providence, James Parrott; Rising Sun, Robert Parrott; Rose, Richard Parrott.
On Ancestry.co.uk I have been in contact with a lady who has alot of 'our' Parrott's in her tree. She even has photos of them online, which she has allowed my to copy. The photos are of: Fennel Parrott (1817-1896) headstone; Francis Annie Parrott (1892- 1960) & George Parrott (1896-?) photo; Francis Parrott (1872- 1955) photo; Henry Parrott (1846-?): a picture of the vessel Perserverence sailed by Henry Parrott and his brother.
I have not found any connection with the Rank family, so far!
I hope this is of help to you both. I might be on the other side of the world, but I tend to be able to find information!!
Cheers, Sharon.
-
Forgot to mention, do you have any headstone photos?, as that is one thing that I would like to see!
-
Hi Sharon,
I have lots of headstone pics and i also have the monumental inscription book for the church at patrington, so will find them all for u. If u have any other names that u would like me to look up for u in this area just let me know.
That pic was great. Its the 1st time i have seen a pic with any of them on.
This lady u were incontact with how was she related?
bye for now.
-

Hi, As sootybear mentioned I'm also related through the same link as she is (technically I think she's my 2nd cousin)
3xGGparents Jane Parrott (1826-1863) m Robert Bielby (1830-?)
2xGGparents Francis Bryan Bielby (1853-1932) m Mary Jane Wise (1855-1874) and m Maria Willingham (1853-1933)
We do seem to have a lot of Parrott links. Two marriages and my dad recalls living next door to a family called Parrott when he was young (late 30's) in Hull.
I've been trying to trace the Bielby line back as far as I can but that's dried up at Richard, Robert's father.
Just joined, I'll get back with some more in a little while.
-
Ok, so a little more on the history. Mary Bryon (spelt various ways) marries Richard Bielby in 1825 in Burton Agnes and has 2 boys, Brian (1826 Haisthorp) and Robert (1830 Rudston). In 1833 Richard dies (Rudston) and in 1841 Mary marries a Richard Tennison in Brid. The next I found was Mary living with the 2 boys in Patrington - the 1851 census has her as a shepherds wife, although no record of the husband. I did find a record of a death cert. for a David Tennison of Patrington in 1849.
From the census records it would seem that there were several Bielby and Parrott families living on Haven Side during the 1840's and 50's. Robert and Jane presumably met there - they married in Mar 1853, their eldest son Francis was born in April 1853. Clearly a story there!
Some time after the family moved to Hull as recorded by the 1861 census where Jane dies in 1863.
I presume that the silting up of the Haven would have caused may families to move to the "big city" to look for work in the 1850's.
-

Hi Parrotts - what a lot of you!
Just checking - I have a Helen or Ellen Parrot abt 1816-1848, she married John Franklin in 1841, Caistor district of Lincolnshire - I suppose she could have crossed the Humber - ring any bells?
Kath
-
Hi Kath,
I have just looked in my tree, and I don't have Ellen/Helen Parrott in what I have so far :( One of the others might have her in their tree. All my Parrotts are from Yorkshire.
Sharon
-
Hello again peoples! :D
Clive - Maybe we should try to find out a bit more on Elizabeth Crump (t), don't know where, but as records are coming online daily, I am hoping one day it will happen!!!
Mike - I have Brian Bielby as 1825 Burton Agnes, so Clive ... help!!
David Tennison was in Sunk Island on the night of the 1851 census, working as a shepherd. He died in 1855 in Patrington. We need to find where Mary Bryan was in the 1841 census, this would have been just before she married David. The children were not with her as Robert was in Thwing working as an Agricultural Labourer and Brian was in Rudston as a servant (I think that is what the letters on the census mean).
As for Robert and Jane Bielby, I bet there is a story there!!!
I am still trying to find record of Robert's death, to no avail so far. It would have been between 1881 & 1891 in Hull maybe, unless he went back 'home ' to Patrington.
I have Ancestry and Find My Past subscriptions, so if any of you need me to look up anything, please let me know.
Sharon.
-
Thanks Sharon, that's interesting about David T, I hadn't found him.
I didn't manage to find Mary either. I did check for Richard's birth in Ottringham as Mary lived close to an Ottringham born Bielby in Patrington, of a similar age to Richard - Could have been a brother? - but I didn't find any records. Ultimately another trip to the archive I guess.
-

Hi
I've no involvement with the PARROTs as far as I know but did take some photos of Patrington Haven a year or two back.
The one attached is of the war menorial which mentions some Parrots.
I have some gravestone photos from Patrington and Paull on my Flickr account which you could look at but I don't think there are any PARROTs

Hi Parrott team, this is so exciting...
I am on the Croft side of the family from Winestead. My great grandma, Everhila Parrott married Thomas Croft formerly of Masham, North Yorkshire but then moved to Winestead, Park Farm (next to the White Hall) from Field House Patrington Haven.
My mother has just visited the Tate Gallery archives in London to see the work of Harry Watson, which was Everhilda's cousin ( I think). He was very talented and famous painter. So if you are related to the Parrotts, then you have links to some serious artistic heritage.
See link.
http://www.tate.org.uk/servlet/ArtistWorks?cgroupid=999999961&artistid=2123&page=1&sole=y&collab=y&attr=y&sort=default&tabview=bio
I also live in Patrington, near the church and have seen all the Parrott gravestones - Everhilda and Thomas are buried at Winestead church with all their children including my Grandad, Richard Croft and his wife Elizabeth Croft (formerly also of Park Farm Winestead). I can tell you some interesting storied about life at Patrington Haven as Everilda passed these stories onto my Grandma and then her to me. I also have some pictures from the time of Patrington Haven including the Haven and the ladies gathered around the old watering pump on the main street. The Haven did eventually silt up around 1856 which is why they moved the fishing smack to Stoney Creek. Lots to tell...
Regards
Sarah
;)
-
Hi Sarah,
Everhilda is my 2nd cousin 3x removed ... if this helps you where I fit in!! LOL . I would love to hear the stories as I have absolutely no knowledge of my family apart what has been posted on this forum. My Mum didn't know her grandparents names, so stories were out of the question. It is so nice to find people who can give me a glimpse of the life of my ancestors. We might have to set up one of those free websites where we can all add our information. Might have to investigate that! Do you know if there are any Bielby's or Bryan's in the cemetery in Patrington? This is so exciting ...
Regards,
Sharon.
-
Hi Sharon
The MIs at Patrington by the East Yorkshire FHS has no BRYANs but George A BIELBY is mentioned at ref. 637 and 691.
637 is the war memorial inside the church - men of Patrington who died - George A BIELBY Pte. 10th Battalion RMLI
691 is the war memorial in the town square.

Sootybear wanted to know about the Patrington Haven Parrott family's links to the Rank family of flour fame. My 2x gt grandfather Fewson Hopper (b. 1822) lived with Robert and Jane Parrott (1841 census) and was apprenticed to them as a fisherman. He later joined the lifeboat crew and was promoted to mate and then Master or coxswain (1865-77), retiring to become lighthouse keeper at Saltend.
William Hopper, Fewson's father, sold his flour mill to the Rank family and there several intermarriages between the two families. The Parrotts, being friends, may also have been involved.
The Rank connections included Joseph Rank (the power behind the flour-making giant RHM) and J Arthur Rank, the film maker.

Hello all you "Parrott watchers"
It's been great to read all your contributions to the thread. Loads of information which I've found really informative. I've just come back from a week staying in Holderness, while trying to add information to my family tree - it was great to meet some of my older relatives - who grew up in "Field House, Patrington Haven".
And to take my kids down to Stoney Creek, like my grandad used to take me. He used to fish from there in "Nimrod"
We also visited Patrington Church - "The Queen of Holderness"- where I was christened, and generations of family have been married, christened, and buried. It brings a lump to my throat looking at some of the stones - the tragedy of the loss of the fishing boat in 1916, and the death of Jim and his son (Both James Arthur Parrott) - I believe my Great Grandad, Richard Sidney, was the only survivor. (I have a poem that was written after the tragedy, apparently was printed in the local paper, =>if anyone is interested, I'm happy to share it.)
With ref to the orginal thread - Fennel Parrott, born in 1818, was my Great, great, great grandad.
Thanks for all your time and effort.
Cheers
-
Hi,
I would love to see a copy of the newspaper article.
Are you able to scan it or send it to me via rootschat?
I remember my nanna, Elisabeth Croft talking about the two men that died. I am sure she said something about them taking barnacles off their boat (whilst in a little foot boat) and it over turned or something like this - or maybe this was another incident?
Regards
Sarah
-
Hi Sarah
The poem's a bit long, and inclined to religion, - rather than subject all to it - I've PM'd you.
Cheers
Paul
-
Thanks Paul, that is fantastic.
Where did you say you had found the poem? Was it a newspaper and was Mr Joseph Stevenson the author? Was it written specifically for them?
Sorry for lots of questions it is so nice to hear the background to how it came about
Kind regards
Sarah

Have been reading all about the Parrotts from Patrington Haven - researching my husband's family - his Great Grandfather was Henry Parrott 1846 - 1935 brother of James Parrot. They sailed the Perserverence fishing smack which is now in the museum of fishing in Grimsby. We have several old photographs of the boat and some taken at the museum. I also have the poem written by Joseph Stevenson following the drowning in 1888 of James Parrott and his son. I am trying to find out abit more about James - who was his wife, son?
-
Hi Sue,
I didn't know the Perseverence was still intact and in a museum. That would be great to see. Would I be able to have a copy of the photos? I live in Australia, I am hoping to get to Patrington and Grimsby next year on a holiday. The information on James I have is B1830 Patrington, M 1850 Ann Branton, Patrington D 1888 ... children John B1852 Patrington, D1888 - Maria B1854 Patrington. I think this is all correct. Where did James & John drown? Is the poem online?
Sharon.
-
A bit late to the posts but I am also descended from the Parrott family as far as Robert Parrott & Elizabeth Hart (m 1731)who I believe were the parents of William Parrott who married Elizabeth Crump. The family name of Fennel I believe comes from the marriage between Wiliam's son James Parrott and Elizabeth Winter whose father was Fennel Winter of Burton Agnes. In turn I am descended through John Parrott b 1790 & Jane Turner - their daughter Annie b 1838 who married John Beales, their daughter Edith Annie Beales b 1875 and her descendants.
It has been great reading some of the posts and has given me some more history to research - I am lucky in that I am in Hull so Patrington is very close by to visit - I think a visit to the church may well be in order very soon!
-
In reference to the gravestones and to earlier question of where Harriet Parrott fitted to the family - her parents were John & Mary (nee Smith) - John being the son of John Parrott & Jane Turner. I believe they also had a further 2 daughters - Sophia b 1847 Patrington d 1875 - Hull & Charlotte Parrott b 1850 Patrington
-
I have some info about the Bielby parts of this family. Email me
John

Hi there guys,
Just been sorting out my family history and just found out that i too descend from Parrotts through Ann Parrott (1807), she is my 4th great grandmother who married a John Langdale (1804). My gran who is 83 lived in sunk Island for many years, her name is Phyliss Freeman (dad Williams Freeman and mother Mary E Langdale) and has two brothers.... Dick who lived at sunk for many years and a sister Alice and another brother whos name escapes me at the moment. They had moved to Sunk when she was about 4 ....before then she lived in Keyingham on a farm with her grandparents James brooks Langdale and Mary Langdale (the grandkids called her muddy as they counldnt pronounce grandma ) . when her grandparents left the farm they moved into a house called Hallowdene which still stands today.
My gran remembers the Parrotts and was suprised she was descended from them .....shes remembers them selling their fish on bycyles....the fish in bags (bassys) where tied onto the handle bars. My gran also remembers the Rank family too as her dad worked for them or alongside them.
When they moed to Sunk they rented a house from a Mr. Todd whom my great grandfather worked for.
Im 43 and i can remeber going to Sunk and collecting rock samper from the edges for my gran to pickle !!! hated the stuff but we ate it because it was good for you .
Please if any of you want to ask any questions about sunk island and its poeple please just ask ill pass on to me gran she'd be more then happy to help.
Thanks Rach
