Presume that you have found the Delbert Lantz who was 10 years old in 1880 Ohio and discarded because of age.  People did (and do) lie about their age.  In 1910 states parents born Germany, but 1920 census says US.

the delbert lantz who was 10 years old was delbert allen lantz who,s parents were allen lantz and susanna.  this is not the delbert lantz who i am looking for.  i have searched all or most of ohio for information pertaining to his
birth but have found nothing.  searching the originality of the lantz name i
find them to be of mennonite origin.  i have searched death certificates
hoping to find an informant delbert harry lantz.  no luck.  i have tried to
search mennonite cemeteries but not knowing the parents name is truley
looking for a needle in a haystack.   thank you for your time. :)

the 1910 and 1920 of california shows delbert living in california and they
report that he was born in ohio and that his parents were born in germany.
i have a copy of the directory of the area with his street address and i also have a copy of his military registration.  he had no social security number
and that is all i have to go on.  nothing shows up in ohio.  some of the
mennonite cemeteries do not give you any information as to who is buried there.  i am in the process of contacting the mennonite church in ohio to see
if they have any records.  i am at a complete loss.   i don't know his parents
name- i don't know where in ohio he was born.- i don't know if he had
sibblings.- i don't know when or where his parents married.- i don't know if
his parents came to california and died there. - i don't know if they died in
ohio.i don't know if they married in germany and when did they come here
either together or separately and met here.  i have been gathering lantz's
in california and will do some searching, hoping to find a link. i belong to two
german genealogy societies, one in burbank and one in sacremento.  one
person served in wwii with a lantz.  he gave me his name and information
but when i tried to find him thru census he didn't show up.  i decided to
search out the name and its background.  i have compiled 4 milk boxes of
individual lantz's.  i am now in the process of putting them together where
i can to make up families.  i am a real stickler as to the correct date, etc so when they fit together, they fit together.  i want to take this time to thank
you so much for getting back to me.  i have been at this for over 3 years and
its nice to have someone come back to me.  thank you again.

Nick, thank you for your reply.  ;)

Duckcarver:  do you know if Delbert Miles had any children and if so, have you communicated with them?  Do you know where Delbert Harry is buried?  I see that he was living in Oakland...do you know if he stayed there until his passing?

I tried searching for every combination of words and dates on the 1900 and 1880 census.  So far, I have not found him (obviously).  Do you know if he had any nicknames?

Do you have Delbert's marriage and death certificates?  If so, I presume there were no hints there, like witnesses?

In case this helps (and you don't already have it), in the 1921 Oakland Directory is
Lantz, Caroline (Mrs) 587 15th
- Delbert H Laurel av and Wisconsin

http://distantcousin.com/Directories/CA/Oakland/1921/Pages.asp?Page=0661

Could there be a chance that Caroline is related?

about the 1932 year that you previously stated.  some where in my small
mind i had read about that date and that the census stated delbert, maud, and delbert jr were all living at the alameda address.  my question was
where was my mom.  delbert born 1909 and she was born 1916.
as to your recent e-mail.  yes i do have that directory and beats me if
caroline is a relative.  she was not at the same address as delbert.  thanks
again.

In case it helps anything, I found articles in the Oakland Tribune that refer to Delbert Lantz Jr., an assistant zookeeper living at 3217 Wisconsin street, being attacked by a lion in 1926.  It said he had a badly torn right arm.  One article had a picture of him.

Shelly, I could only view a portion of that article.  (I didn't see the "Jr," part!)

I would think that Delbert Miles would have been too young to be an assistant zookeeper.  Perhaps Delbert Harry's father was also Delbert?

Can the articles be viewed on a non-pay site?

I wonder if Delbert passed away from his injuries.  If so, how is he included on the 1932 voter reg?  Duckcarver stated he passed away in 1926.

Delbert Lantz, born c1909, on board the Mormacswan (image shows "Vessel S.S. American"), arriving New York from Cristobal, Canal Zone, Panama on March 2, 1927.
List of crew includes:
Lantz, Delbert, Wiper, shipped or engaged January 22nd, where: San Francisco, American, 6', 170 pounds
Could this be Delbert Miles?

I wonder why the two Lantz children are not shown on the California birth index?

I am not finding any of the Lantz family members on the 1930 census.  ???
-------
Dorothy is shown as born in 1916, Alameda County.  She is listed as Lautz.
---------
While searching the 1900 and 1880 census, I've tried variations of Lantz: Santz, Tantz, Lantg, etc.  Maybe we can find Delbert in 1900 with a variation of Lautz?
---------
Found Delbert's CA birth index.  He is also listed as Delbert Lautz, born Los Angeles County.

I cannot find Dorothy in 1930.  If it hasn't already been mentioned, have you tried to find her with any Miles family members?

I don't think Delbert died of his injuries, as there is a mention of the incident in a 1928 article (apparently the son of the lion that attacked Delbert attacked someone else) and it doesn't say that he died.

The 1926 article calls him Delbert Yantz, Jr., but later refers to him as Lantz.  I figured it was a typo, but thought I should mention it just in case.  It's hard to tell of the age of the man in the picture, but I'm inclined to think he's the younger one.  I guess he could have been working around age 16.

I was not successful in finding anything further about the 1926 lion attack.  Assuming Delbert worked for the Oakland Zoo, it appears that the zoo hadn't been fully established in 1926 (I was picturing the current zoo and it's well trained staff).  ;)  Perhaps they were hiring some younger people "back then."
http://www.oaklandzoo.org/zoo-info/history/history/

Apparently, the San Francisco Zoo's construction planning was in 1929, which discounts that zoo.  I don't know if there were any other zoos in the bay area in 1926.

If Delbert, Sr. did pass away in 1926, perhaps Delbert, Jr. accepted what could be a somewhat risky occupation, in hopes of helping support the family???

well this is a pack of wonderful information.  can you tell me how i can get a
copy of the oakland tribune article that you mentioned.  also i agree that
delbert jr was to young to be the zookeeper.   the only information that i
have on delbert jr is that he was a chaufauer(can't spell) before he joined
the service, signed up in sanfrancisco.  he would not have been able to go
in the service if he had had an injured arm.
as to maybe delbert sr dying from the arm injuries, maybe, but he later after
the attach he worked as the warehouse foreman.
don't know of any nicknames for delbert sr.
i only saw my uncle, delbert jr, twice in my life and i have no pictures.  when
i saw him i was a teenager (eons ago) and he owned property in oregon.
i have since found several lantz's in oregon and will search them out to see
if there is a relative.

If you send me your e-mail address via private message, I will send you the articles.  It was the Oakland Municipal Zoo.

Considering how many teenagers I've seen in census records who are employed with full-time jobs, it doesn't seem beyond reason that a 16 yr. old might be working as an assistant zookeeper.  I suspect zoos back then may have been less focused on science and may not have required much education to work there.  Considering that the younger Delbert was mechanic/welder in the 1930's, if he was the attack victim, it would seem that he must have healed well enough to do physical work, so I don't know that such an injury would have prevented him from joining the military.

Do you have the death certificate of the elder Delbert?  What was his exact death date?  That could solve the lion attack mystery one way or the other.

It also appears that the Lantz men were not of small stature, which would be a plus for an occupation involving animals.  Perhaps he was hired as more of an extra hand, rather than someone with knowledge of exotic animals?

Shelly, may I ask for a copy of the article, too, please?  I will pm my email, if you are able to send the article.

lisa; delbert miles lantz was born c 1909 and was on board the mromacswan arriving in the papama on mar. 2,1927 as you stated that who is delbert lantz who worked at the zoo in 1926.  my grandfather, delbert lantz died in 1929 stated by gen forum and genealogy .com.
studying back to the origination of the lantz name is quite interesting.
landsnetch first originated 1003 and didn't change much until the romans had trouble pronouncing it so they shortened it to lantz thru one other variation.
now that variation is the basic name and all other variations came off of that.
lanss or lans came from switzerland.  lantio came from italy.  the other variation came from just plain bad writing.  lance came from the french and
most settled in new jersey. there is lentz, lans, lants, and several other
variations.  never heard of lautz but maybe thats why i can't find her under
the social security index.
you might be right that delbert lantz assumed some of the burden of the
family taking the zoo job to help out.
in talking to my mother in my teen years she stated that her father never
talked to her until she was 10/11 years old when he was ill and she used to
change his dressings.  i wonder if he was the one with the injuries and might
have died from gangorine.  since i don't have any definate records to contact the state of california it would be hard to get any information.   i have looked
up cemeteries and can't find him or my grandmother who died in 1929.  now
she went into a hospital for a hystorectomy and died on the operating of
dehydration. this information is from my mother.  she was always very bitter
towards the family because no one of the lantz family would take her in
apparently and she was sent to live with an old maid aunt, jessie, who was
maude mile lantz sister.  jessie owned a farm and my mom says that they
only thing she had to do was iron the hired hands clothes and set the table
for the hands.  this was some life for a young teen.
shelly,
i have no death certificate, marriage license or any legal papers of any kind.
my grandmother gave my mom a bible when my mom was 7 years old but
there is not information in that.
between the two delberts and one harry and the other miles is a little
confusing sometimes.  good records were not kept because they didn't know
the importance nor that anyone would be looking up records later on down
the years.
well now i have information from two people and am so thrilled.  all these
years i have flying by the seat of my britches.  now some one is flying with
me.   i can't say enough thanks to you both for your help.    shirley

If you want to know where he was from, I would definitely recommend pursuing his death and marriage certificate.  It may not give you anything more than you have, but you won't know until you see them.  Since you've gotten information about an earlier death date than where Delbert Sr. shows up in the voter registration, I'd be concerned that the information may be wrong.  (Or the voter registration may be wrong.  But it would help to find out either way.)

There are volunteers on www.roagk.org (one in Alameda Co. and two listed in All counties) who do look-ups on the California death index prior to 1940.  I would recommend asking one of them to try to find your elder Delbert.  With a definite death date, you could order his death certificate and possibly get an obituary.  There is also someone on www.raogk.org in Los Angeles Co. who does marriage look-ups, so that might be someone to contact if you think that they married there.

i am shirley.  my mother was dorothy eunice lantz.  she had an older brother delbert miles lantz.  her mother was maud miles lantz who died in 1929 in los angeles county, california.  my moms dad was delbert harry lantz who died 1926 in los angeles county, california.  in a 1910 census my grandfather, delbert harry lantz states that he was born in 1879 in ohio and his parents were from germany.  my problem (over 3 years) of searching, i cannot find any information on my grandfather, delbert harry lantz in ohio or any where else.  he worked for bekins van and storage  as a warehouse foreman and i have his military registration.  my grandfather and grandmother were married in redlands california in approximately 1907. is there anyone out there who remembers this lantz family or who might be related.  i am trying to do a family tree but cannot find the "limbs" to attach to the tree.  thank you ahead of time.

You started a thread on this family a few weeks ago.  A number of people provided information and suggestions for further research.  Yesterday, you started a whole new thread on him, which can lead to people looking in the same places we looked previously & giving you the same information all over again.

If you gain any new information over time, definitely add it to this thread, as it may help us uncover new things.
