Is anyone familiar with the name William James McCaughern. He was my father (died 14th of October, 1969) and I would like to find anyone related to him anywhere in the world.
He was born in the Portglenone Area of County Antrim, Northern Ireland. He married Mary Bennett and had five children.
Thank you.

Hi,
I have McCaughern ancestors in the Rasharkin, Portglenone and surrounding townlands. There are still McCaugherns living there to this day and they are all over the graveyards in Rasharkin. I have their headstone listings for Rasharkin if thats any help. My dads family have lived in the area for this past few hundred years. There are 2 other posters on this site apart from myself that I'm in touch with that have a joint interest in the name also. I'll mail you again tomorrow when I check my tree and give you my connection but your're dad would be a generation or 2 down as mine are like 1860 - 1890 ish. Chat soon

Hi there!
I was McCaughern before I married in 2004 - Wilfred McCaughren was my great grand father so I am guessing that you must be related to me?? Perhaps you are my great aunt Isobelle from Canada???
I am trying to find James McCaughren who went to America shortly after Wilfred and Jonny were born but I am not having any luck! I hope I can find some relatives in America who can shed some light on what he done etc.. when he landed in New Jersey!

Jock,
I can find a record of a James McCaughan who married Margaret HANNA on 26 Jul 1901 in Dunluce Church of Ireland, Coleraine District. Coleraine is in Co. Londonderry but Dunluce is in Co. Antrim.

The correct spelling is McCaughern and there are decendants alive and well in the Portglenone area.
-
There isn't a 'correct' spelling (especially years ago)- McCaughren, McCaughan, McCaughern, etc. are all variants used by the family over the years.
-
The spelling McCaughern I quote is correct.
The descentants live at the bottom of my lane and I have both went to school with and regularly recieve mail to their wrong address.
-
What you are talking about is the current spelling of a particular family but throughout other records there will be other variations used.
-
I understand that fully especially with a name with so many very similar variations.
The person is looking for descendants of a man who only passed on in recent times. I thought that there is no point in anyone researching several spellings whilst we know the correct spelling for this particular family.
