Title: Catherine Gillespie - 1890
Post by: jivebunny on Monday 11 October 10 23:03 BST (UK)
My wife's grandfather Francis Binnie Spiers was married to Catherine Gillespie in April 1905. Her age on the marriage cert was given as 23 yet when she died in 1939 in Larbert Asylum her age was given as 49 suggesting that she was born in 1890 or thereabouts. Despite a visit to Register House we have been unable to trace her birth details - possibly in the Denny area. Her parents were Alexander Gillespie and Catherine(MS Anthony). Can anybody help?

1891 for Falkirk - children all b Falkirk

Alexander Gillespie 36 coal miner b Denny
Catherine Anthony 34 b Slamannan
Jessie   11
Cattie   9 (Catherine)
Maggie  5
Jinnie 2
Falkirk Landward ED 11 Page 14

So her age on her marriage cert is the right one

Hi Carole,

Thanks for your input. We had seen the census details before and eventually twigged that Cattie was Catherine - note Jinnie further down was eventually deciphered as Tinnie as in Christina!

Still can't find Catherine's birth details.

Regards

I had some spare credits, so had a look on S.P. to see if I could find anything....

If Catherine's age on the 1891 Census was correct, it would make her year of birth 1882 +/- 1 year

On S.P. there are only two Catherine Gillespies born in Stirlingshire in the Falkirk area. The first one:

(Born 10th August 1883 at Kerse Lane, Falkirk to Patrick & Bridget Gillespie m.s. Gallacher.)

The second one was born 1883 in Polmont - I didn't look at that one

Changing the year of birth to 1890 +/- 1 also only brings up one and again, another wrong one.

(Born 1st March at The Thorn, Parish of Falkirk to John & Mary Gillespie m.s. Taylor)

there is a Robert Gillespie born in 1791 in Falkirk landward who will be related to Alexander,Robert's relative Agnes 1847 is i believe related to my Agnes Gillespie 1858 who's daughter was Mary Catherine Loney to whom i referred.(catherine born in 1891 and 9 months on the census) may be able to dot and cross the t's with that information.Agnes 1847 was related to a William who would be my Robert's brother by the sounds of it.  Don't know when William was born but My robert was born in 1821 in Alloa if this helps.

Found Catherine Anthoney Gillespie(Catherine Anthony Gillespie) born in Slammannan Stirlingshire with Same details as on post with Alexander as 36 and Catherine as 34 and Children Jessie 11 Cattie 9 Maggie 5 and Jinnie as 2 on 1891 Census living at Jawcraig Low Row 1. If you need to find it found the Parish as Falkirk Landward Enummeration district 11 Page 14 Line 3 Roll CSSCT1891-149. Registration District Falkirk Landward Civil Parish Falkirk Landward.Alexander was born in Denny and was a Coal Miner. Believe that would mean Alexander was born in 1855 in Denny and Catherine would be born in 1857 in Slammannan.

Hope this helps.
