Hi, I wonder if anybody can help, trying to trace my Welsh roots.
Evan Samuel Owens born abt 1818 in Bangor Caernarvonshire,
married Lucinda Roberts at the Cathedral church Bangor 1st qrt 1839
Evans address was Orchard Street, his father was Samuel.
1841 and 1851 census they lived at Kyffin Square. Evan was a coach builder.
they had 5 children on the 1851 census. in 1851 4qrt they had my greatgranddad Elias born Kyffin square.
my puzzle is this;
Elias's mother was named as Lucy Neal, and all subsequent census names Evan's wife as Lucy, I cannot find a death for Lucinda there is a Lucinda Owen death in Phwelli but she was only a child, nor can I find another marriage for Evan. was Lucinda and Lucy the same person if so where did Neal come in, as Elias was not first born.
also from 1871 census the family came to Buckinghamshire to live with the railway works this is where most of us descendants still live.
apart from ordering all the children's birth certs( it took me 4 attempts to get Elias right)how do I solve this puzzle any clues most appreciated.

what details were given for Lucinda on the marriage certificate ?

Hi janaridge,
Could these be yours?
Death of Owens, Evan Samuel, 85, Mar qtr 1903, Potterspury, vol 3b pg 16
Death of Owens, Lucy, 56, Mar qtr 1888, Potterspury, vol 3b pg 18
Her age is a little off ???, maybe a 6 has been transcribed as a 5? Evan is a widower in 1891 and 1901 census so the date would fit (the place too). I guess the only way to be sure is to purchase the document. Evan is still a widower in 1901 at 83yrs – are you sure he remarried?
OH - I just found Elias in 1851 as OWEN, Elias Dec qtr, 1851 Bangor vol 27 p 280 :)

Hi and thank you for your help, details I have are taken from certs I have brought.
Its a problem we still have with our name some say Owen some say Owens.
right;marriage cert details: 13/2/1839 Evan Owens, official age, batchelor, coachmaker, Orchard Street, Father Samuel Owens.
Lucinda Roberts, official age, spinster, High Street, father Patrick Roberts Farmer. witnesses Evan Evans, Charles Fletcher GRO no. 27/362.
Elias Owen; born 22/10/1851 GRO no 27/280 mother Lucy Owen formerly Neal, father Evan Owen, coach maker, Kyffin Square.
12/2/1888, Lucy Owens, wife of Evan,, coach maker, aged 56 years, death Buckingham street, Wolverton station Potterspury district.
Evan Samuel death is also right he also died in Buckingham street Wolverton 1903 GRO no 3B/16
the 1st child on 1841 census was born in 1840. by 1851 census they had 4 more children all living at Kyffin Square,
all census say Lucinda/Lucy was born in Ireland.
Im totally confused :'(

Thinking outside the box why would the registrar write down Lucy Neal because he would have been told this obviously think how Lucy spoke with an Irish accent could Lucinda be mistaken for Lucy Neal?

Hello Jan,
We are related! My great great grandfather was also Elias Owens!
I have had exactly the same quandry as you regarding Lucy Neal/Lucinda Roberts.
On the 1851 census for Bangor they were living in Kyffin Square. We visited last year and unfortunately it is now a car park.
Lucy has a sister, Elizabeth, who is also listed on that census, and who later lived with Lucy and Evan in Potterspury. They both state they were born in Ireland.
My great grandmother was Lucy Owens, who was Elias' daughter, born 24 December 1881 in New Bradwell. I believe she had 7 siblings, Nellie, George, Ernest, Albert, Minnie, Joseph and Elias.
Would love to hear back from you
regards

Hi Jan
According to NorthWales BMD Evan & Lucinda were married at Bangor Cathedral Church. If you write to the Caernarfon Record Office with the date of the marriage you should be able to obtain a copy of the actual entry in the church register with original signatures etc. This would at least eliminate any possibility of mistranscription.

Hi Heather, I have got a copy of the actual marriage cert, it's Lucinda Roberts. I have now paid for a search to be done at Carnarvon record office, for the births of the other children to see if their mother was a Lucinda Roberts or Lucy Neal.

If you have obtained the marriage certificate from the GRO it is the copy of a transcription sent from the local registry office for indexing, in which case it might be in error. Even the local registrar's copy may be in error. Only by obtaining a scan of the actual parish register can you be completely sure that the names are correct!!
