Hi I wonder if anyone can help with a part of my family tree.
An ancestor William Gourlay married Margaret Rea in St Ninians on 21st November 1802. Margaret was born on 3/3/1784 according to the IGI at Milnquarter in St Ninians. Her parents were John Rea who I think was born at a place called Little Canglor on 16/7/1752 and Jean Ferguson who was born in St Ninians on 21/12/1755.
Has anyone heard of Little Canglor or Milnquarter - can't see them on any maps.
Has anyone heard of the Rea's - beginning to think it might be Rae but been mis spelt.
Although I am originally from Tillicoultry I now live in Stirling and this is the only part of my tree from Stirling
Thanks
Steven

Google maps gives Milnquarter about 10 miles south of Stirling.
Lots of references to Canglor (looks as if there was an historic battle there in 1488!) on G , looks as if part of St Ninians, but doesn't come up on the map as you say.

The only Milnquarter (I know, or have heard of) is in Bonnybridge, so that's probably the same one as goldie61 found.

Hi,
Have you seen this record on pilot family search.
John Rae baptised on 16/07/1752 at St Ninians, parents John Rae & Jean Ure.
I also have a Rae family in my tree and the spelling changed all the time between Rae, Rea, Ray & Reay.

Thanks for the information much appreciated.
Sharon what is the site you found the birth on? Will check that out - it looks like a match

Went on and had another look for Rae's and Rea's - really confusing. The hard part is that the OPR's don't have any information to verify your search eg parents names, spouse etc so its pretty much guess work
Thanks
Steven
I know John Rae/Rae's daughter Margaret Rae married a William Gourlay on 21/11/1802 in St Ninians but can't finds her death etc so looks like the end of the road

Hi, I don't know how old your post about Canglor is.
My Agnes RAE was born in 1716 in Little Canglor, St Ninians and her parents William and Margaret were both from same area but her grandparents William Rae & Jonet Hutchinson came from Fife and Falkirk in Stirling.
I have a Gourlay on another branch and I can not find out anything about them other than James Gourlay born about 1760, came from the Edinburgh district

Hi colliecat I had started this post ages ago and given up hope!!!!
Your Rae is a bit earlier than I have but the similar name and place ie Little Canglor seem to be very similar. The first Rae I came across was Margaret Rae sometimes spelt Rea - she was born on 3/3/1784 in Milnquarter, St Ninians in Stirling. Her parents were John Rae (Rea) who was born on 16/7/1752 in Little Canglor, St Ninians. I live in Stirling and know St Ninians but can't find any reference to Little Canglor - I am assuming it was maybe a farm/land. John Rae's parents were John Rae and Jean or Jane Ure and they were married on 18/8/1751 in St Ninians but that is far as I could get. The parish records become too sparse.
The Gourlay's are a main part of my tree and seem to have originated in the Falkirk area which is near Stirling and Kilsyth. NOt sure if you can add anything else? Any information would be great to try and share

Sorry I couldn't be more help.
Some of the OPR baptisms etc have it spelled CANGLOUR without the little in front, as a parish of St Ninians, as does the very old Commissariot records of Stirling.
And for modern times there is a Canglour Estate in St Ninians.
I found a place on an OPR called Goldenhove St Ninians which turned out to be Cultenhove and it is no longer a place but an estate in St Ninians.
So I'd suggest you find the Canglour estate and you will find the area where the family used to live.
My line goes back to far to another William Rae from Falkirk marrying another Agnes Rae from West Lothian.
I'd imagine that she was a cousin whose parents really came from Stirling as she married there....must go it is 1 am over here in my part of the world, Carole

Have a look here: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/place/Meikle_Canglour_in_Stirling_388611_797611.htm
I think Canglour might have been both in St. Ninian's Parish and Denny (Dunipace) Parishes over the years.
In WW1, one of the men who died is listed as having lived at Canglour, St. Ninians, but when a notice of his death appeared in the Falkirk Herald (1915), the article was entitled 'Denny Australian Killed at Dardanelles'.
His name was Miller Johnstone, son of Agnes Johnstone.
