Title: Help pls Thelwells in Birkenhead in 1911 Census
Post by: ktkeith on Sunday 10 October 10 15:57 BST (UK)
Hi there,
Would anyone be able to help?
My grandparents were living at 67 Cathcart St in Birkenhead in the 1911 Census.
It's very difficult to get the time to visit the record office. Is anyone planning a trip there who could maybe check the Electoral Rolls to see how long the Family lived there?
Would be very grateful.
Thankyou in anticipation
The Family were as follows;

THELWELL
JOHN aged 31, his wife GEORGINA FLORENCE  aged 27
(Children were GEORGE ELI aged 7,  JOHN W aged 6,, LESLIE H aged 2 and ELIZABETH aged 3 months)

Hi

I'm a new recruit when it comes to this sort of stuff, but......
I'm a resident of Wirral and shall be going to Birkenhead Library for my own research purposes in the next few days, and I'd be happy to pinpoint the dates of the Thelwell residence for you - assuming you've not had other replies.
I guess you've probably already gone on Google Streetview - you'll see that Cathcart Street is now a mixture of modern housing and some industrial units, so I think the original terraced houses have been pulled down some time ago.

Hi Keith
I have returned with an answer but probably not the one you were hoping for.

In 1900, the resident was Joseph Jones.
From 1901 to 1903, the resident was Edward Angus.
No-one was listed for 1904.
From 1905 to 1915, Joseph Jones (again, presumably) was at this address.
The Birkenhead Electoral Roll has three divisions for each ward; the 'main' list, a lodgers list and a service list (and I assume this is standard across the country).
I made sure I checked all three divisions but no mention of the Thelwells I'm afraid.
I'm sure there's only one Cathcart Street but just to confirm, the one I checked was in Birkenhead Grange Ward.
'Grange' should be visible on the Enumerators List on the census.

I've come across this problem before when researching my own family - maybe for whatever reason he wasn't eligible to vote, or chose not to be eligble?
Women didn't get to vote until 1918, and then only when over 30 years old.
I guess that Joseph Jones isn't on the Census for the address?
Let me know if I can do anything else.
Neil

Morning Neil,
That's a bit of a puzzle. Maybe it was a temporary lodging. I know they were at 13 Butler St, Kensington, Liverpool some time later but I was hoping the family would have been there a while and that there'd be records for Cathcart Primary School, maybe log books and the odd school photo but it seems doubtful.
It actually states Cathart St in the 1911 Census but I assumed it was a typing error as when I googled it it came back as Cathcart.
Also my Gt-Grandfather was a soap works later, which I believe was close by.
Thanks for taking the time to look I really appreciate it.

Hi Neil,
Just checked again and there's no mention of Grange on the Census. It just says Sub district of Birkenhead, district 19.
I'll have to try and find out if there was actually a Cathart St.
Regards
Keith

Hello Keith

The actual census reads 67 Cathcart Street, so there's been a transcription error.

John Thelwell married Georgina Florence Hughes mar qtr 1903...they married in the register area of Ellesmere...I think this is in Shropshire ???...could someone check for you...this would suggest they were in Ellesmere or surrounding area up until early 1903 .....allan

Hi Allan,
They did indeed marry in Shropshire, in Worthenbury.

Hi Keith, Worthenbury is in Wales, as is Overton, Georginas birthplace. Ellesmere registration district covered mainly Wales but small parts of Shropshire. Regards.

Hi Keith,

Having looked at the actual document on the 1911 census, there is a transcription error with the address.  When i entered 'Cathart Street' only no 67 came up, but where John Thelwell has signed it says 67 Catchcart Street, Birkenhead - your family are living in 2 rooms and the other 67 Cathcart Street census (John Joseph) family have 4 rooms.

Do you have the census as I can pm it to you.  There are two children listed on the Thelwells that have died and been scored out.

Kind regards,
Bumble

Hi Bumble,
I don't have any of that information, that's fantastic. If you wouldn't mind forwarding it that would be great.
Thankyou very much
Keith
