Title: 1911 census help
Post by: debh on Friday 08 October 10 19:19 BST (UK)
Hi all

I'm helping a friend out with her ancestry and am stumped when trying to use the 1911 census  :o.

I'm borrowing her "find my past" subscription but have hit a brick wall trying to find her grandmother.  How hard can it be to find Martha Ann Keefe born in Swansea in 1905? I've located her birth there and tried searching variants and all counties but can find nothing.  The only other info I have is that her dad's name was Richard and she had two brothers believed to be named richard and patrick.

all help welcomed!

Deb

Hi,

Have you looked for the father, Richard?

Searched Martha's birth by +/- a couple of years?

Are you sure she was in England or Wales in 1911?

Perhaps she's listed as Ann?   I've a few ladies in my tree who switch their names around!

Hi all and thanks for your replies - at least its not only me who cant find them!

I have looked for Richard in 1901 but cant be sure i've found him - he was married in 1903 so wouldnt have been with a wife and family in that census.

Think my friend might have to buy a birth cert to be sure on this one and in the meantime keep trying to locate by using dad's name or variants on Martha Ann

Thanks so much

That's what I was going to suggest.

I've tried looking by just putting Martha  born 1905 Swansea and nothing remotely like Keefe comes up. Also tried the same with Ann.

Very odd. Do you know where Richard came from, was he Welsh?

Hi Deb

Is this the marriage?

Marriage

Sep 1903 Swansea

Vol 11a Page 1576

KEEFE Richard

and either/ or

STONE Margaret Ann
WESTACOTT Edith

I can't see any births with the same mother's maiden name (only indexed after Sept 1911), so that implies that the brothers were born before that date.

Yes, that is the marriage.  Not yet sure of the name of the Martha's mother until birth cert comes so not sure how now to proceed.

It does seem that they are absent or possibly using another name. Wonder if theirs was a missing census return?

Onward Ernest Honey (awesome name) married Edith Westacott, so Richard must have married Margaret Stone (unless there are multiple people missing from the page as yet).

Ancestry gives:
Martha Ann Keefe 1905 Sept Qtr Glamorgan   11a. 1122
I take it you have this.

There's a marriage for Martha A Keefe in Swansea in 1925 to a Trevor Parry.  I know it's not what you asked for but it might point to the Keefe family being in Swansea in 1911.

Can't find any trace of them in 1911 though.

Thanks again people

Yes, Martha married Trevor Parry you're spot on there.  Now we know who Richard married I can look for them in 1901 but its such a mystery where the family are in 1911.

The 1911 site does say that some pages are water damaged / illegible and are not available online so I am only assume that this might be the case for this family.  I'll get on to my friend and suggest she orders birth certs to find out more.

Cheers again all, much appreciated xxx

Hi,

I see from the 1901 census that there are 2 Richard KEEFEs born about 1883/1884 that are in Swansea. I wonder which Richard has died before the 1911 census?

Death
Richard KEEFFE    Dec Q 1906    Swansea   11a  593
Age at Death: 23

Oh it looks like they both might have died young,

Death
Richard KEEFFE    Mar Q 1913    Cardiff    11a  550
Age at Death: 28
