I have been told:
James Ryder married Amy Gord 26-3-1833
James (perfumer) Amy,son, Frederick 19-11-1835 Stonehouse
James W (perfumer) Ann Phillipa, son, Harry James 03-03-1834 Stonehouse.
This information on James and Amy 1833 to 1835 ties in with the census information I have from 1841, although James changes occupation to guard / hairdresser on the Stirling Castle convict hulk, and it looks like their first son Harry died between 1833 and 1834, as Frederick is the oldest child on the census.
I have not been able to confirm parents for either James (born about 1810 Devonport) or Amy (born about 1804 Plymouth) - their children all born East stonehouse (Frederick 1835, George 1836,
Emily 1840, James 1842, Harry 1843)
Also, I had believed Amy was Amy Philp GOAD, an unusual name, but there is an indication it could be Amy Philipa GORD.
Has anyone got access to any more information from their marriage or baptisms.
Thank you

The 1841 census has a James William Ryder wife Anna P
James occupation was "superintendant of convicts"
Children were Frederick aged 5 (1835/36)
George 4 (1836/37)
Emily 2 (1839)
James William 2 months
The marriage in 1833 does not show middle names for either James or Anna/Amy
Births March qtr 1839
Emily Ryder East Stonehouse 9 361
Births June qtr 1841
James William Ryder East Stonehouse 9 338
A copy of one of the childrens birth certs will confirm mums name/maiden name
A Benjamin Hollister has reported a mis-transcription on the 1841 census for this family? Are you connected to him?

According to Stoke Damerel baptisms (Covers Devonport):
14 Oct 1810 James RYDER son of James William & Elizabeth RYDER

Thank you for your replies.
I do have the family in 1841, 1851, 1861 (James Ryder died before the 1861 census - either 1859 Plymouth if he was at home, or 1860 Fareham if he was still on the Stirling Castle at Gosport then)
Amy Ryder died 1870 Portsea, Hants (the death index is where the ref to her middle name being Philp came from, but Phillipa sounds more plausible - the 1834 ref to Harry James ryder in my first message).
It looks like the birth of George Ryder (abt 1836 E Stonehouse) is not going to be easy to date, without a record of his baptism.
Do you know which would be the best source for more information on the 1833 marriage James Ryder to Amy Gord / Goad to confirm exactly what her last name was and any info on parents?
I have been in touch with the creator of the Hollister tree on ancestry, and it looks like the "Anna P Ryder" on that is "Amy P" as that is how she is referred to in all other documentation for this family. He has also acknowledged that the Goad reference to her name could be down to poor handwriting/mistranscription of Gord if the note of her name in the 1833 marriage is correct.
If more marriage information is not available, than as you say the birth certificate of one of their younger children you have identified may be the way to go.
Thank you
