Have a comprehensive family tree (down to present day) for the Millner family who lived in the village of Biggin, close to Hartington for decades during the 1800's.
My problem is the origin of my wife's G.G.G.Grandfather Francis Millner (1790 - 1869) who was a farmer at Dale Head , Biggin.
Both the 1851 and 1861 census show him born in Etton, Derbyshire.
Can anyone please tell me where Etton is (or was) ??

Hi Owen
Could it maybe have been ELTON?
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/DBY/Elton/index.html
It's about 6 miles from Biggin.

Hi Owen,
Yes I too think that the village is Elton, have found the baptism of Francis Milner on 28th February 1790 at Elton (son of Benjamin & Hannah) - also marriage of Benjamin Milner & Hannah Buxton on 11th July 1781 at Elton, Derbys.
Hope this information helps. :D

To Dazey 999 and Wisteria 16
Thanks for your incredibly quick and useful responses.

Can I intrude and ask if Wisteria has access to Elton parish records because I am searching for any Bowns from there?
-
Hi sustev,
Sorry I don't have the parish registers for Elton - I can only suggest that you try the I.G.I. on familysearch.org. Best of luck with your search.

Hi sustev
I've checked my Elton CD & ,surprisingly, there's not one Bown birth, marriage or burial.

Hi colkitto
That's a disappointment but I am extremely grateful to you for checking this out for me. However I wonder how wisteria was able to find the baptism and marriage for Owen?

Hi Owen ap Anglesey,
1851 Census
The Transcription of this states
Frances Molner
age 62 born 1789
Born Etton, Derbyshire
However if you look at the actual census sheet it states:-
Francis Millner
born Elton, Derbyshire
As you are queering the place of birth, the L in Elton has a loop and the T in Elton does not.

Thank you Spendlove
I finally accept that my Francis Millner was indeed born 1790 in Elton.
My interest in the Millner family finally forced me to drive to the record office in Matlock two days ago - where the parish records unravelled considerable information. Wisteria16 was correct in the suggestion that my Francis was the son of Benjamin Millner and Hannah Buxton from Elton. From this information I may well have traced the family back to 1650.
I also traced his first marriage in 1812 to Mary Dain. Still work to do - because I suspect that Francis re-married at least once more if not twice.
For those of you who live in Derbyshire - I found your Record Office very efficiently run.
My thanks to everyone

Hi,
I believe we have a link with Francis Millner of Elton. Francis had a daughter called Thirza who is my husbands great-great grandmother. It would be great to compare family trees if you'd be happy to confer.
-
Hi
I have two Francis Millner's on our family tree. I assume you are referring to the one born 1790 in Elton and died 1868 in Biggin. My records show that he married twice.
His first wife Mary Dane gave birth to four children and his second wife Mary Chatterton gave birth to a further eight children.
Unfortunately I have no record of a daughter called Thirza.
Do you have Thirza's birth details ?
-
Hi
1851 census Elton has a Thirza born abt 1857 dau of Francis and Hannah Millner.
This Francis was born abt 1815 Elton, Thirza marries 1877 William Oldfield

Thanks for your quick response.
I am seeking the Francis Millner (sometimes Milner) born Elton, 1815-1906 married to Hannah Stone. I suspect that the earlier one in Biggin is likely to be a relative though.
Thirza Millner is one of their children born 1856-1904.

Thanks Spendlove. I have seen the census records you've mentioned thanks. I'm also aware that they lost 4 of the daughters aged in their 30's between 1864-1871. Does anyone know if that would be down to influenza or tb??
