I am trying to find out information about Tom Moore born (1848 at Doncaster Yorks, England) who was listed in 1871 UK census as being 2nd Battalion, 17th Regiment and Depot 1st Battalion 17th Regiment at Aldershot, Hampshire in 1871 (age 22) & married in 1877 to Alice Mary Marsh at Aldershot Parish, Aldershot, Hampshire, England & described in 1881 UK census as Lancer Sergeant Army Hospital Corps with one son Arthur Frederick Moore born 1879 at Aldershot, Hampshire, England.
This is all I know about this family & I would like to know more as I think that this family is related to mine?

I have an ancestor, Joseph STENSON, who was born in Coleorton Leicestershire 14 Feb 1775. His obituary says he joined the military "at an early age" and served in Ireland. I suspect he was in the 17 Leicestershire regiment since he was from Leicestershire and I know The 17th was in Ireland about 1800.
Does anyone know whether service records exist from that time period and how I would go about getting them? First I would like to somehow confirm that I have the right regiment. Do muster lists exist and where? Then, I would like to find any information available in the hope that Joseph's father might be identified.
Than you for any assistance or guidance that you might be able to provide.

Hi Vern
Surviving records should all be on Findmypast. Early ones can also be found indexed on the National Archive's Catalogue, but his is not coming up. This probably means he did not serve long enough to be awarded a pension.
Muster Rolls do exist from this period, but there are almost 200 books for a given year, and it is very unlikely that you have his regiment. The names of regiments were largely meaningless until permanent depots were established in the 1870s. In fact the 17th did not serve in Leicestershire until this time - although I have no information about the 18th century. Almost all regiments served in Ireland, England and Scotland.
Even if you find his regiment it will not give his father's name. As you know where and when he was born you would be better off researching the parish registers.

I have been through the parish registers for Coleorton where he was born but can't find any record. I have also looked in transcripts of surrounding parishes published by the LRFHS. His brother, who was actually my ancestor, was a baptist so I am assuming that is why I can't find anything in the parish registers.
I would have thought that enlistment documents or attestation papers would have listed a next of kin, which would probably be his father or mother.
